Producers recorded the tributes over several days for Debbie Allen, Joan Baez, Garth Brooks, Midori and Dick Van Dyke in and around the Washington, D.C. landmark for a ceremony to be broadcast this Sunday, June 6, on CBS.
Here is the complete list of performers and presenters to be seen on the two-hour program hosted by previous Kch recipient Gloria Estefan. While all performers were there in person to honor the entertainment careers of these icons, some presenters recorded their portions from other locations.
Debbie Allen:
Presenters are Paula Abdul, Phylicia Rashad, Shonda Rhimes, Tracee Ellis Ross
“Fame” performed by Ariana DeBose, Vanessa Hudgens, Vivian Nixon, Tiler Peck, Desmond Richardson, Anika Noni Rose

"All I need is a shot!" Gvn Releasing has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled High Strung Free Dance, a sequel of sorts to the dance romance movie High Strung from 2016. This time the romance is between a talented pianist and an up-and-coming dancer - in that other movie it was between a violinist and a ballerina. In Free Dance, Zander Raines, a dazzling and tempestuous young choreographer unwittingly ignites a romantic rivalry with his pianist, Charlie, when he embraces a stunning contemporary dancer, Barlow, as his muse for his innovative new Broadway show: Free Dance. The cast includes Thomas Doherty, Harry Jarvis, Juliet Doherty, Jane Seymour, Ace Bhatty, plus Desmond Richardson. This is so cheesy and extravagant and all showbiz, which might be just what excites a few of you. Dance on. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Damian's High Strung Free Dance,...

With a line-up that already packs a punch, Sundance will also include a new section simply called “Special Events” which is described as “one-of-a-kind moments highlighting new independent works that add to the unique Festival experience. An evolving section, this year includes episodic work, short films and live performance.” In what promises to be a I can’t believe I’m watching what I’m watching type event, the one item that has caught our attention is Andrew Jarecki delving back into a subject heading he is familiar with in All Good Things moving forward into the HBO series, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst (six-part documentary). It all comes down to this! "So You Think You Can Dance" Season 9 aired its two-hour live finale on Tuesday night -- complete with a Carly Rae Jepsen performance -- and for the first time ever, two winners were crowned. This season was certainly an interesting one, given its new format without a results show, and because of the new rule about having a male and a female winner.
The female winner is Eliana Gerard. A ballet dancer from Florida, 21-year-old Gerard was Nigel Lythgoe's favorite female dancer this season, and she's already been asked to join Desmond Richardson's company after the show. She beat out Jazz dancer Tiffany Maher, also from Florida, to take the cash prize.
The male winner is Chehon Wespi-Tschopp, whose expertise is also ballet. When asked to showcase a specific piece from the season, Chehon chose to revisit his Argentine Tango with Anya.

While Nigel Lythgoe announces that this year's competition on So You Think You Can Dance--now reduced to just one night a week--will have two winners (one male, one female), he mysteriously left out how those winners will be chosen. I'm excited for the season to kick off, but I'm a bit apprehensive when it comes to the new voting system. I just can't help but feel like the ninth season--which could be the last if ratings don't hold--might screw its loyal fans over.
We get through our first bunch of dancers, which will obviously be a contemporary bunch because Duh. Alexa, who has struggled through this year's auditions, finally makes it in after getting cut at the last minute in season 8, and she's absolutely ecstatic about it. I'm intrigued to see if she can withstand the pressures of the Top 20, but she is an early favorite. She joins Amber...

Neil Patrick Harris took the guest judge seat last night beside Mary and Nigel. Interestingly there wasn't a fourth choreographer judge to join him as in the previous two weeks. I guess the producers figured Harris had enough gravitas on his own without stacking the judging panel with an expert.
I was struck by how calm and self-assured Harris was. (I guess that's what comes of being crowned Gay Man of the Decade.) Last week, Jesse Tyler Ferguson brought a manic energy to the show. In contrast, Harris seemed to exert a calming influence on the proceedings. I think he even rubbed off on Mary, who was unusually subdued-- even when praising an Argentine Tango, something that would normally put her on full tilt. No whistles, screams or tamale trains last night!

So You Think You Can Dance delivered surprising twists aplenty on Wednesday night. Nine of the 10 remaining dancers scored rave reviews from the judges. One choreographer got spanked rather harshly by this week’s guest panelist. And an All-Star dancer bled (rather sexily) for his art. But nothing will be more shocking than seeing one of Season 8′s fabulous female contestants head home on this week’s results show. (Shouldn’t the FCC step in and threaten Fox with a hefty fine for denying us another week of one of these singularly fierce ladies? And doesn’t that sentence make...

"So You Think You Can Dance" is getting closer to the seventh season final. Top 11 is now down to Top 3 with the elimination of AdeChike Torbert on Thursday, August 5. The contemporary dancer from Brooklyn, New York was the last called among the four dancers after the solo performances.

So, this week, they had the first same-sex routine (not the first ever, but the first pre-finals) -- and it turned out to be an excellent one -- a hip hop Alex Wong danced with Twitch, and they also allowed the contestants to talk a bit about their inspirations for starting their dance careers, which I thought was nice. First on: Adechicke and Lauren dancing a hip hop choreographed by Dave Scott. First, Adechicke says he's inspired by Desmond Richardson, which excited me greatly because I love that man! Says he liked him because he's manly, nothing feminine about him, not to mention an excellent dancer. The routine: I thought it was pretty good. A stunning upset by the underdog! A come-from-behind victory that changes everything we ever thought about dance, art and reality television! And a totally believable attempt by Jennifer Lopez to convince us that she wasn't lip-synching! Absolutely none of these things happened on "So You Think You Can Dance" last night. And I don't think anyone's exactly complaining.
Just about everyone with eyes could have predicted that Jakob and Russell would be the top two dancers since, oh, the first top 20 competition. Ok, I predicted that Jakob would take the title in the end, but Russell's smile always held a magical power — and when he also pulled off some amazing pirouettes, a decent paso doble and showed off a bit of krumping on Tuesday night, he clinched the votes he needed. And I don't think anyone's sorry he did.

Many specialized segments of our society don't reflect the population's full range of racial and ethnic diversity, but the dance world is certainly not one of them. Despite its rarefied nature, the art of dance attracts a variegated roster of performers and choreographers, many of whom also reflect diverse cultural sensibilities in their movement styles and musical choices. I recently spoke with three distinguished dance-company directors and choreographers about how their troupes and their work mirror current demographic diversities. Dwight Rhoden: Complexions Contemporary Ballet "I like to think that when we came on the scene we really changed the playing field and had an impact on diversity in the dance world," says Dwight Rhoden, a co-founding artistic director, with the celebrated African-American dancer Desmond Richardson, of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, a company whose name mirrors its mission to reflect the vast variety of human complexions.
