The episode of Deconstructing… covering Wes Craven’s New Nightmare was Written, Edited, and Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When one of your horror-head friends mentions Wes Craven slasher flicks that lean into the late director’s signature meta filmmaking style, what movie automatically comes to mind? Scream? Well, yeah. But let’s not forget that Scream, while being arguably the greatest and most consistent slasher franchise of all time, is not Craven’s first turn at using meta commentary to create an iconic horror film. The director is remembered fondly for re-invigorating the slasher genre with 1996’s Scream and rightfully so – but before re-invigorating the genre, he first Invigorated it with the iconic Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, which introduced audiences to one of the most recognizable movie villains of all time. A remake of the Jimmy Stewart-Kim Novak romantic comedy “Bell, Book & Candle” is in the works with Jay Weston and Sara Risher producing.
Weston, who has producing credits on “Lady Sings the Blues” and “Invisible Child,” originally optioned the remake rights from the estate of original author John van Druten, then collaborated with Harvey Weinstein on the project for several years. He announced Friday that Weinstein and Miramax are out of the project. The disgraced ex-mogul was found guilty on Feb. 24 of committing a criminal sexual act and third-degree rape.
Weston said he is acquiring the remake rights again with veteran film executive Risher joining him. Risher was a New Line exec before launching Chickflicks Productions, through which she produced the drama “55 Steps” starring Hilary Swank and Helena Bonham Carter. The producers are seeking a female director for “Bell, Book & Candle.”

1945, Leningrad. World War II has devastated the city, demolishing its buildings and leaving its citizens equally demolished, physically and mentally. Although the siege which lasted 900 days, one of the worst in history, is finally over, life and death continue their battle in the wreckage that remains. Two young women, Iya and Masha, work at the hospital among the dead and dying while they search for meaning and hope in the struggle to rebuild their lives amongst the ruins.
For people in extremis, the quest for normalcy is a quest in vain. All that has happened marks them forever. The two young women served as soldiers on the front and are seeking a path to peace, but no such path is open to them.

The origin of this project goes as far back in our women's collective memory to the time in the late 80s when Janet Grillo was head of Acquisitions for New Line Cinema and Sara Risher was head of production. I was buying features for Lorimar or Republic Pictures. We did not know at that time that one day, after Janet had completed her directorial debut, the lovely and loving film "Fly Away," that Sara would tell a certain writer-producer. to show her script to Janet as a possible director.
Janet liked it and together they developed it further at L.A. Film Independent. They then won the PGA Script Award. They hired an 18-year-old who had been a child actress and was a Nyu Freshman just finishing a TV Career. She agreed to star in January and the film was shot the following May 2014.
It premiered in Geena Davis’ Inaugural 2015 Bentonville Film Festival in May 2015 where it won the Jury Geena Davis’ new effort to celebrate the work of women and diverse voices in media also is the only festival to guarantee distribution for its winners’ project.
“The goal of the festival is not just to showcase women and diversity—it’s to really have a proactive and powerful effect on the industry,” says Davis, Bff co-founder and founder and chair of the nonprofit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. “We’re intent on being extremely proactive in showing the films that include women and that are very commercial. Our goal is to show that this is the direction in which things are heading and we should get there sooner.”
"Jack of the Red Hearts” has now arrived in theaters nationwide as of February 26, 2016. "Jack of the Red Hearts”. Arc Entertainment and Trent Drinkwaer who founded the Bentonville Film Festival with Geena guarantees a minimum of one week in AMC theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Mimai, Minneapolis, Orlando, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Tampa and Washington D.C.
On its opening night, Thursday, February 25, Geena Davis, Famke Janssen, Phyllis Nagy (writer, “Carol”), Catherine Hardwicke (director, “Twilight ”) and Danielle Carrig (Svp Lifetime) joined "Jack of the Red Hearts” director Janet Grillo, producer Lucy Mukerjee-Brown and writer Jennifer Deaton for a special screening of the film and Q&A at the YouTube Space in L.A. In conjunction with Broad Focus, Lifetime, the Genna Davis Institute on Gender in Media and the Bentonville Film Festival, the Q&A, moderated by the Wrap’s Sharon Waxman, will begin immediately followed the 7pm screening.
It will play on Lifetime April 20 which is Autism Awareness Month. It will show again at Bentonville Film Festival’s second edition May 3 - 8 of this year.
Bentonville’s strong affiliation with Walmart, the only vendor and the largest still selling DVDs will release it in its stores and on its VOD site.
Anna Sophia Robb portrays “Jack,” a tough teenage runaway on the lam from her parole officer. The conniving street kid brazenly impersonates a trained caregiver and forms a unique bond with an 11 year-old autistic girl named Glory, brilliantly played by newcomer Taylor Richardson. Famke Janssen, as the child's desperate mother Kay, also bonds with the imposter, as a surrogate daughter she can actually talk to. And the girl’s cute older brother Robert (Israel Broussard) falls in love. When the deception is exposed and the cops descend, loving father Mark (Scott Cohen) struggles to hold his family together as the pieces of this puzzle are reshuffled into a new, satisfying whole.
"Jack of the Red Hearts” is directed by Janet Grillo (writer/director of “Fly Away” and executive producer of Emmy®-winning “Autism: The Musical”) and written by Jennifer Deaton. Both have strong ties to the autism community as Grillo is mother to a child on the autism spectrum and Deaton is aunt to a child on the spectrum. The producers are Stefan Nowicki, Joey Carey, Lucy Mukerjee-Brown, and Morgan White.
The film stars AnnaSophia Robb (“The Carrie Diaries,” “Soul Surfer”), Famke Janssen (“X-Men”), Scott Cohen (“One Life to Live”), Taylor Richardson (“Annie”), Israel Broussard (“The Bling Ring”) and John D’Leo (“Unbroken”).

Lifetime Films and A+E Studios have joined with JuVee Productions and ChickFlicks to produce "Lila and Eve," a new film from "Drumline" director Charles Stone III. The feature will star Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez and will tell the story of grief-stricken mother Lila (Davis), who, after her son is murdered in a drive-by shooting, begins attending a support group where she meets Eve (Lopez), who lost her daughter. When the police seem unable to help, the two women end up taking justice into their own hands -- not through the activism you might expect from this initial set-up, but by killing their way up the ladder of drug dealers responsible for the death of Lila's son. "Boardwalk Empire" actor Shea Whigham will play the detective investigating the pair's crimes. "Lila and Eve" is written by Pat Gilfillan and will be produced by Sara Risher and Darrin Reed. Davis...

Chicago – Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Freddy Krueger. Yes, Wes Craven’s masterful creation deserves to be listed right along with the most legendary villains of all time, a case made complete by Warner’s excellent new “A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection,” featuring all 7 original films and a new half-hour documentary about the lasting power of the man with a claw for a hand.
Rating: 4.5/5.0

And while the first and last (“Wes Craven’s New Nightmare”) are the only truly great films in the set, there are things to like about all of the movies (Ok, all...

Chicago – I haven’t seen it yet but just watching the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in gorgeous HD has me pumped up for the Platinum Dunes remake about to be released. The world could use a little more Freddy Krueger (played by the excellent Jackie Earle Haley in the remake), one of the most memorable creations in the history of horror.

"Young Victoria" director Jean-Marc Vallee has found his next project: "Lost Girls and Love Hotels."
Kate Bosworth is attached to star and is also producing with Relativity Media.
Nadia Conners wrote the screenplay, which adapts Catherine Hanrahan's 2006 novel.
The story centers on a woman (Bosworth) who tries to forget her past while working in Tokyo as an English specialist at a stewardess training institute by day and losing herself in a sex- and drug-addled oblivion by night. She finds herself on the road to redemption when she becomes interested in a missing Western girl.
Vallee's "Victoria," which opens Dec. 18 via Bob Berney's Apparition and Graham Kings' Gk Films, is getting attention for its style and for the strong performance of Emily Blunt.
The idea with "Lost Girls" is for Icm-repped Vallee to draw a strong female performance and marry that with a setting that is gritty yet vibrant,...

Chickflicks Prods. has optioned the film rights to Lisa Fineberg Cook's forthcoming memoir, "Japan Took the J.A.P. Out of Me."
Cook will adapt the screenplay with her teacher husband, Peter, who inadvertently laid the groundwork for the book. Downtown Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, will publish the memoir Tuesday.
Chickflicks' Stephanie Austin ("True Lies") and former New Line Prods. chairman Sara Risher ("Hairspray") are producing.
With the subtitle "The True Story of a Domesticated Princess," Cook's book details her personal journey of relocating to Japan six days after marrying her husband, who had taken a one-year teaching job in Nagoya. Having left her valet-defined L.A. life behind, Cook endures the abrupt transition to a culture severely lacking in manicures and Jewish-American women but teeming with cooking, cleaning and commuting duties.
"I love that she's so honest about what's going on," Austin said. "She's quite brave...

NEW YORK -- Warner Independent Pictures is set to bring Tom Perrotta's offbeat romantic comedy novel "The Wishbones" to the screen with "Little Miss Sunshine" producers Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa.
WIP optioned the rights to Perrotta's script, which follows a 30-year-old failed musician living with his parents in New Jersey. On the eve of marrying a longtime girlfriend, he begins an affair with a bohemian poet from Manhattan who makes him question his life and future.
ChickFlicks' Sara Risher will executive produce, and WIP vp production Lauren Craniotes will oversee for the studio.
Berger and Yerxa heard Perrotta do a reading of his 1997 debut novel "Wishbones" more than a decade ago, but when he wasn't ready to pass along the work-in-progress, he handed them what would become Alexander Payne's "Election". The pair later hired Perrotta to adapt his novel "Little Children" with Todd Field, which landed them an Oscar nom.
"Wishbones" initially was sold to Fox, then brought to New Line in 2000, where Perrotta adapted it before it was put into turnaround.
