After a Sundance screening in 2002, Lucky McKee’s cult classic horror film May (watch it Here) earned a wider release in 2003 – and to mark the twentieth anniversary of that release, Second Sight Films is giving the film a special edition Blu-ray release in the UK that is packed with hours of bonus features! The release date is July 24th and the Blu-ray can be pre-ordered at This Link – but keep in mind that the Blu-ray is locked to Region B.
Written and directed by McKee, May has the following synopsis: Young misfit May endured a difficult childhood because of her lazy eye. And though contact lenses have helped May adjust as a young adult, her deep-seated awkwardness remains a problem. Adam, a young man obsessed with fixing wrecked cars, takes a shine to May’s oddball ways. But May’s strangeness ultimately drives him away, leaving her open to the advances of her co-worker Polly.

In the wrong hands, cliches are about the worst thing that can populate a film. Handled poorly, they just remind you all that can be wrong about cinema. However, cliches became that way for a reason, and are popular with some degree of cause. So, when filmmakers can lean in and utilize cliched material for their own means, sometimes you wind up with a fun result. Star Light is just such a beast, wandering down a well worn path but occasionally doing it in a way that we haven’t seen before, allowing it to stand out from the pack. Out now, it’s an option to consider for genre hounds. The movie is a mix of horror and science fiction, with a bit of an original hook. Here, we have the story of a group of teenagers fighting off a strange entity and protecting a mysterious woman, but the...

"You are not safe with her in there..." 1091 Media has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror titled Star Light, a twisted little film directed by filmmakers Mitchell Altieri & Lee Cummings. A kind-hearted teen's life is turned upside down when he helps a world famous pop star on the run try to escape her violent pursuers. He ends up hiding out with her at a friend's house, turning a fun graduation party into a night of living hell. Starring Cameron Johnson as Dylan & Scout Taylor-Compton as Bebe A. Love; also joined by Rahart Adams, Liana Ramirez, Garrett Westton, Chandler Rachelle, Hagen Mills, Tiffany Shepis, Kevin Jiggetts, and Bret Roberts. This looks like it has a crazy twist where it turns out the pop star is some kind of creature. Maybe a werewolf or something else? I wonder if this is going to turn out to be a horror...

Nightmare Code is a psychological sci-fi thriller about behaviour recognition technology and 24/7 surveillance. Brett Desmond, a genius programmer with a troubled past, is called in to finish a top-secret behaviour recognition program, Roper, after the previous Lead Programmer went insane. But the deeper Brett delves into the code, the more his own behaviour begins changing… in increasingly terrifying ways. Suspense builds with surveillance, PC, and eyeglass cameras – often with four images onscreen at once… as if Roper itself is telling the story.

Written and directed by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores Aka The Butcher Brothers, The Violent Kind is a film that I have mixed feelings about.
The movie opens with three members of a Northern California biker gang, Cody (Cory Knauf), Q (Bret Roberts) and Elroy (Nick Tagas) beating the crap out of someone over a bad drug deal or something. Okay so it’s established that they are a pretty violent crew. Three are headed to an isolated mountain cabin to celebrate Cody’s mom’s birthday with the rest of the gang. The party isn’t going so well for Cody—he’s been informed that he has to take on a crap job (he was born into the gang, his dad being an original member) and then his ex-girlfriend Michelle (Tiffany Shepis) shows up with another guy.
Cody’s mood lifts a bit...

Director: Brian McGuire Starring: Joey Capone, Bret Roberts, C.C. Sheffield, Brian McGuire, Harry Dean Stanton, Mark Boone Junior, Elana Krausz, Winston Zarco, James Duval The Boyle clan is perversely rich, yet their extreme level of dysfunctionalism rivals any stereotypical "white trash" family. We can only assume that things were much different when their much-respected patriarch was still alive; but he is dead now and their mother (Elana Krausz) has turned into a cougar who enjoys preying upon much younger men. Now, the future of the family -- and the family restaurant -- is in the hands of the nine Boyle boys. The youngest of the brothers, Steve (Joey Capone), is currently the cook but he aspires to eventually overcome the pressures of his overbearing family and become the manager of the restaurant. When we first meet Steve, his demeaning position seems to have rendered him with a bout of impotence...

Cody (Knauf), a second-generation member of a violent and notorious Nor-Cal biker gang, ride out with his friends to party at a cabin located deep within the redwood forest. At the end of the wild evening, things take a turn for the worse when Cody’s ex-girlfriend Michelle (Shepis) is discovered wandering aimlessly and covered in blood, screaming and convulsing as if she were possessed by something unworldly. Cody and the others try desperately to help Michelle while stuck in the middle of nowhere, but their plans are quickly ruined when another malicious gang, seemingly from the 1950s, shows up “looking for a few kicks…the violent kind.” However, this ominous Rockabilly gang is not there to pick a fight. Cody (Cory Knauf) is a second-generation member of a California biker gang. One night, he and his best friend Q (Bret Roberts) along with assorted other members of their biker fraternity head out to a remote farmhouse for a party. Most of the revellers have drifted off when it all starts to get a bit weird, then bloody. The cars won’t start, the lights are on the fritz and all of a sudden one of their number is possessed by an other-worldly entity and a 1950′s rockabilly band start dishing out some genuinely unpleasant violence on the rest of them.

Beginners (15)
(Mike Mills, 2010, Us) Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Mélanie Laurent. 105 mins
Mills doesn't iron out the hipster-auteur quirks here – a subtitled dog, freeform photomontages, felt-tip illustrations – but he puts them to the service of an authentic drama. McGregor is an La loner whose widowed father (Plummer) came out as gay and enjoyed a few hedonistic years before his death. Not your standard indie baggage, this warm, smartly told story deals with it sincerely, and gets the sweet/sad balance just about right.
Horrible Bosses (15)
(Seth Gordon, 2011, Us) Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis. 98 mins
Clearly aiming for the post-Hangover fratcom market, this sees three guys' plan to off their bosses go awry from the outset, with occasionally amusing, but often crude consequences. Colourful big-name cameos gloss over some political dodginess.
The Big Picture (15)
(Eric Lartigau, 2010, Fra) Romain Duris, Marina Foïs, Niels Arestrup. 115 mins
Duris proves his leading man capabilities amply...

The Violent Kind is the latest low budget offering from The Butcher Brothers (The Hamiltons). The story follows our likable lead character Cody (Cory Knauf) and Q (Bret Roberts) who are tough neighborhood punks who like to fight, a lot! Throw Cody’s ex-girlfriend Michelle (Tiffany Shepis) , her younger sister Megan (Christina Prousalis) and several strong supporting cast members in and we have us a weird, twisted and ultra violent party movie.
The story takes our “gang” up to the woods to a cabin to, what else? Party! It’s all good times when all of a sudden the camera shows us that there are others watching. We watch Cory deal with his ex Michelle who is at the cabin with her new bf. Cory is the cool, calm and collected one of the entire group and plays it cool. Of course, we have our hot-heads, funny guys and beautiful...

See the trailer for The Off Hours, starring Amy Seimetz, Ross Partridge, Lynn Shelton and Scoot McNairy. Megan Griffiths directs as well as writing the screenplay for the indie film, drawing complex characters and staying true to them, respecting their shortcomings and yearnings for connection. The film premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim and also stars Tony Doupe, Bret Roberts and Gergana Mellin. You're awake when everyone else is asleep. You're standing still as traffic is whipping by at 70mph. Your off hours are spent trying to figure out why you're here, whether you want to stay, and how to leave. In The Off Hours, Amy Seimetz (Tiny Furniture) alluringly commands the screen as Francine, a waitress whose liberation from her mundane existence is long overdue. In the dreamlike and restless world of the night shift at a highway diner, Francine's life consists of casual encounters and transient.

Last year, to much hype about the future of film festivals bringing films into people’s homes over the Internet, the Sundance Film Festival launched Next, a curated series of 8 “innovative” and “low-budget” films that also played on YouTube — for a price — for the duration of the fest.
As an innovative program, Next proved to be largely disappointing — to the indie film industry anyway, not to the filmmakers themselves. Getting into Sundance is a cachet for any filmmaker in and of itself, so that was bonus for these films. However, during the fest at the time, many film bloggers and writers complained that the Next films were impossible to find on YouTube. Plus, the entire program didn’t end up turning the industry or the current film festival paradigm on its ear, and financially it sounded like it was all a big bust.

After announcing the 58 films in four categories that would be eligible for awards at Sundance, the film fest has now announced the next 57 movies to be screened this coming January. These 57 films are of course out of competition and will be included in Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. Most are big name projects from already established filmmakers and some have already made their way around film festival in 2010. The list includes Kevin Smith’s Red State, Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Submarine, I Saw the Devil (which had plenty of buzz at Tiff) and my most anticipated film of 2011, Hobo With a Shotgun.
Here is the full list:

To showcase the diversity of contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films.
