With warm weather here, the time has come to crank up the AC and binge on these must-see series, from the bloody “The Knick” to the brainy “iZombie.” “Bob’s Burgers” (Fox)I first discovered “Bob’s Burgers” after bingeing on a rather different show: the cannibalistic psychodrama “Hannibal.” Cowering under my covers in the dead of night, craving a light-hearted palate cleanse, I pressed play on the acclaimed animated sitcom. The show has been my go-to comic relief ever since; like its predecessor, “The Simpsons,” it can be watched in any order, meaning the lovably pitiful Belcher family is there whenever I need a laugh. Its first-rate cast, led by H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Eugene Mirman, Kristen Schaal, and especially Dan Mintz—as everyone’s favorite derrière-loving young woman Tina—provides in each installment a master class in zippy comic timing. Plus, any episode featuring Megan Mullally, Aziz Ansari,...

Brittany Snow, Sharon Osbourne, Kelly Osbourne, Natasha Leggero, Jameeliah Garrett, John Roberts, Jessica Lowe and Nasim Pedrad are set to lend their voices to the MTV half-hour animated comedy series "Fancy Bastards" at Titmouse Inc.
The story centers on a small town that is shocked to learn its five most awkward outcasts all share the same father - a notorious ginger cad who had an indiscretion filled night during a whirlwind visit to Vegas nine years ago... and just happens to be a prince. For the people who thought George Clooney was Thursday’s big New York Comic-Con surprise, they clearly didn’t see the gargantuan, dancing Tina Belcher that stormed the main stage. After Disney’s Tomorrowland panel, the real-life stars behind Fox’s Bob’s Burgers — Loren Bouchard (creator), H. Jon Benjamin (Bob), Eugene Mirman (Gene), John Roberts (Linda), Kristen Schaal (Louise), Larry Murphy (Teddy), and Bobby Tisdale (Zeke) — came, character voices in tow, to tease fans about the show’s upcoming exploits. Here’s what we learned about this season:1. There are some deliciously sexy awkward moments coming.Bouchard screened three sneak-peek clips for attendees. Two of them were spicy. Kind of. In one, Linda accidentally dyes her hair completely blonde. She looks like a crazed version of Carol Brady. With her new look, she also tries on a new persona: sexy-chef-cum-sexy-nurse. In another clip, the curmudgeonly, geriatric couple Edith and Harold,...

The Woodstock music festival, the multi-act concert that took place in Bethel, N.Y., in 1969 is celebrating its 45th anniversary today.
Woodstock Turns 45
Throughout the weekend of Aug. 15 – 19 in 1969, Woodstock played host to a number of acts that hold significant stature in the history of music. When co-creators Joel Rosenman and John Roberts came up with the plan for the festival, they had no idea of the cultural impact it would go on to have. Woodstock was certainly the first of its kind, and now decades later copycats like Bonaroo, Coachella, Governor’s Ball and Firefly are summer fixtures.
“There has to be a granddaddy—and this was certainly it for the festival business,” said Rosenman. “There’s something about festivals that is timeless and indestructible.”
After the 1969 enterprise, Woodstock was held twice more in 1994 and 1999. A fourth Woodstock could potentially be in the cards, according to co-creator Michael Lang,...

An arthouse fishing-trawler documentary sounds like a practical joke, but this takes us to places we've never before – into the ocean depths and back out on to the decks with the catch. It's a series of dark, semi-abstract tableaux full of flapping fish, clanking machinery and tattooed fishermen doing wet, gory work. It's easy to forget this is real life you're watching.
Saving Mr Banks (PG)

How Walt Disney came to make Mary Poppins was hardly a pressing movie mystery, and one suspects a spoonful of drama has been added, but the leads are eminently watchable.

It’s fair to say that the mixing of Scottish and Cuban cultures is not one particularly well covered in film. Therefore, and despite the mediocrity and melodrama that taints this John Roberts production, Day of the Flowers is a unique and original piece of filmmaking, delving into themes and a clashing of cultures that we’ve yet to see on the big screen before.
When sisters – and complete polar opposites – Rosa (Eva Birthistle) and Ailie (Charity Wakefield) steal their fathers ashes from their widowed step-mother, they set off on a trip to Cuba, to scatter them on the annual celebration, ‘The Day of the Flowers’ – in a place where their parents had experienced many fond memories supporting the revolution. Though Rosa is an activist, always looking for change in what she perceives to be a superficial world – her fashionista sister epitomises everything she’s against. Upon arrival in Cuba,...

Bill Maher blasted Chief Justice John Roberts and fellow conservative members of the Supreme Court over their ruling on the Citizen’s United, Voting Rights Act during Friday’s episode of HBO’s “Real Time.” “John Roberts is kind of the legal equivalent of the guy (Jeremy Renner) in the ‘Hurt Locker,’ except in his case, he always cuts the wrong wire and everything always blows up,” Maher said. He also made a new rule: It’s a no-brainer — if a lawmaker promises the American people something won’t happen when they change the law, and something does happen, than they have to be held.

Season four of Bob’s Burgers opens with an episode far from the burger joint itself, as the Belcher clan attempts a camping trip. The distance from the typical setting and the regular supporting characters works ideally as a premiere, because it allows the characters to be themselves. Nothing to influence them but each other, and that woodsy air.
Further, because Bob and Linda quickly get separated from Tina, Gene, and Louise by the nefarious river, the family is divided into its two most adorable groupings: power-couple Bob and Linda, and the three best-friend siblings.
The episode opens with Bob boasting about his camping skills, and when he eats a tiny, undercooked fish instead of some chili from the survivalist campers nearby, it’s obvious that everything will go horribly wrong. This puts Linda in the unique opportunity to be the one to save the day, putting a fresh spin...

The poem that gives Sunday's (Sept. 15) "Breaking Bad" its title is a sonnet by Percy Bysshe Shelley in which a traveler describes seeing a crumbling statue in a barren desert. It closes with these six lines:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
It wasn't hard to guess from the episode title that by this time, things would come crashing down around Walt. Just how it plays out in "Ozymandias," though, makes for one of the most wrenching hours of television in a long time, and one of the best episodes of a series full of great ones.

Justice Ginsburg to officiate same-sex wedding, Uma Thurman views the whoring bed, Harry Connick, Jr. signs for American Idol

The next few years are shaping up to be busy for acting stalwart Mark Wahlberg. This year alone, his name will be featured in four different projects as a producer; two of which for television. His acting will also match up to his production record, featuring the film “Broken City” and such tentative ones like the sequels for “Ted” and “Transformers.”
Wahlberg did take the time from his onslaught of burgeoning cinematic projects to speak on these topics. Wahlberg says of his involvement in “Broken City”: “Allen Hughes, the director, had called me and asked if I had read the script – I was aware of the script but I hadn’t read it yet.” Wahlberg continues to say, “So I read it right away, we met up and I said, ‘okay let’s do it…but not only do I want to act in it, but I want to...

Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard and his crew have come up with—hands down—the most captivatingly strange sitcom on network TV. Now in its third season and having recently been picked up for a fourth, the Emmy-nominated animated series is the gem of Fox’s Sunday night cartoon block. What’s more, its continued existence may be a sign that the network has finally turned a corner when it comes to canceling shows with cult followings. Bob’s Burgers revolves around the Belchers—swarthy Bob (H. Jon Benjamin), his supportive wife Linda (John Roberts), and their three equally but distinctly quirky children, Tina (Dan Mintz), Gene (Eugene Mirman), and Louise (Kristen Schaal). They own a burger joint that does okay business (and have an apartment above the restaurant, making them one of the few TV families with an economically realistic living situation). While there are some basic similarities between Bob’s Burgers and the rest...

Life During Wartime: Barratier Schmaltifies Nazi Occupied France
France has made a considerable move to reclaim her literature, as not one but two French productions of Louis Pergaud’s 1912 novel, War of the Buttons, have been released this year. This brings the total number of filmed adaptations of the celebrated novel to five, with two original French versions (in 1937 and 1962), and the better known 1994 UK version from John Roberts previously standing as the definitive English speaking film version. However, thus far, the Us will only be privy to one of the new additions, that directed by Christophe Barratier, the man whose directorial debut, 2004’s The Chorus was nominated for Best Foreign film in Americaland (the other, from Yann Samuell, whose 2003 debut, the much celebrated Love Me If You Dare top lines Guillaume Canet, used in Barratier’s ensemble here, but has yet to receive distribution in the Us market...

Give credit to Fox News for covering Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's Ihop-worthy flipping on abortion, but even more credit for their unintentionally funny (or not?) juxtaposition of a little nugget about Paul Ryan's debate prep. Just before playing a clip of Romney's description of the legislation that he earlier swore was not part of his agenda, Chief National Affairs Correspondent John Roberts said that the Romney campaign told him that, at tonight's vice-presidential debate, Paul Ryan has been given instructions to "faithfully stick to the governor's policies."...

Fans of animated comedy have known H. Jon Benjamin’s gruff deadpan since the days of Comedy Central’s Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist and, later, Adult Swim’s Home Movies. Lately, he’s been voicing the title characters to two of TV’s funniest cartoons, FX’s Archer and Fox’s Emmy-nominated Bob’s Burgers – and, soon enough, fans will get to watch him do both at once.
In an interview with EW, Benjamin revealed that the Archer team has produced a crossover episode in which he’ll play both Isis agent Sterling Archer and grillmaster Bob Belcher. The episode’s already been recorded,...

The Bob’s Burgers team knows that, at Comic-Con, the limited menu of congealed cheese-topped nachos and pretzel dogs provide many potentially throat-obstructing dangers, and this year the Fox animated show is doing something about it. Vulture has obtained an exclusive first look at the Bob’s Comic-Con poster, which they've made into a step-by-step first-aid guide for chokers. We especially like the tip for handling pregnant ones. The Bob’s Burgers Comic-Con panel takes place Friday at 4 p.m., with executive producers Loren Bouchard and Jim Dauterive and voice cast members H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, and Kristen Schaal participating. You can get the poster for free at the Fox booth (#4313) on the convention floor.

On Fox News earlier today, John Roberts conducted a panel discussion on the economy and, more importantly, the fight President Obama and Mitt Romney are having over it. However, the panelists didn't feel like Romney was doing enough to counter Obama, with Charles Krauthammer declaring that if Romney can't properly articulate the right arguments against Obama, he doesn't deserve to win the election.

In a panel discussion on Fox News Channel’s America Live with Megyn Kelly, the guests tackled the Supreme Court’s decision in health care reform and the motivation for Justice John Roberts to side with the court’s liberal justices. In a heated discussion, a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush lamented the pressure that all federal judges face from “the Georgetown cocktail circuit or the New York Times” to side with the political left.

By far the biggest story of this week was the Supreme Court's ruling upholding the constitutionality of fining individuals for not having health insurance, a move that Justice John Roberts wrote fell under the taxing authority of Congress. On Fox News Watch today, the panel noted that his decision to side with the more liberal justices appeared to change the tone of liberals in the media when referring to him, who now saw him as a "hero" for what he wrote.

Hey! You! You're on page two of "The Best Articles On The Obamacare Ruling." Click here for the wonderful first page.
"Inside the Obamacare Ruling: How Roberts Got A Majority," by Daniel Fisher, Forbes
"The cobbled-together nature of the decision doesn’t diminish its sheer legal cleverness, bordering on brilliance. By upholding the law, Roberts sheltered the court from liberal criticism. At the same time he asserted at least two powerful holdings that pushed the authority of the court further than it had ever gone before. That makes Roberts the heir to the one of the first Chief Justices, John Marshall, who protected the infant court from being strangled in its crib in the early years of this country while also establishing its power to invalidate acts of Congress."

People spilled out of the door at Edinburgh's Cameo Cinema last night both in the ticketed and the stand-by queue, as they waited for the world premiere screening of John Roberts' romantic comedy drama Day Of The Flowers.
The film, which tells the story of two chalk and cheese Glasgwegian sisters, left-wing reactionary Rosa (Eva Birthistle) and fashion victim Ailie (Charity Wakefield). After hearing of their dad's death, Rosa decides to kidnap his ashes and whisky him to Cuba in a bid to reunite him with their mum, who passed away on the island many years before. Ailie may not be completely onboard with the ashes plan but the prospect of a holiday in the sun is too good to miss and before long they are on a dysfunctional road trip that will force them to confront their relationship and that of their parents.
Although the plot becomes rather too convoluted for.

20th Century Fox Television has announced its 2012 Comic-Con schedule, which we therefore present to you here. Not that they’re offering much that we cover here at SciFi Mafia, except for one of my top two shows. Hey Wait A Minute – Argh! No American Horror Story! Well, given that they’ll probably be shooting, and that Ryan Murphy has indicated that he’d like to keep as much of it under wraps as possible, that’s probably not a huge surprise, though it is a disappointment.
We already learned about the Fringe panel from Warner Bros last Thursday, and… that’s it for us with Fox, except for Futurama which is also produced by 20th Century Fox Television. But for those of you who watch shows that we don’t usually cover here, well, here you go:

O Lord, how long? How long, Lord, wilt Thou be angry for ever?
--Saint Augustine, Confessions, Book VIII
Well over three years ago, as I was conducting deep background research for my book, The Lies of Sarah Palin: The Untold Story Behind her Relentless Quest for Power, I had an off-the-record discussion with one of John McCain's closest advisors about Steve Schmidt's participation in the selection of Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate. "Steve is undergoing some serious soul-searching about his role in all this," the advisor said, "and he's got a ways to go. But you should probably give him a call."
At the time, I was trying to assimilate in my own mind how the "best and the brightest" in the Republican Party had so shamefully -- and irresponsibly -- landed on Palin as McCain's vice-presidential selection during what many viewed as one of the...

Almost everyone in the Obama administration, including President Obama himself, has been apologizing to Muslims all over the world after Nato forces burned copies of the Quran in Afghanistan yesterday. Protests have erupted all over Afghanistan, and over a dozen people were killed in the middle of protests today. On Fox News' Special Report today, guest host John Roberts focused on the U.S. reaction to the protests, with some strong words being thrown at the Obama administration for its continued apologies.

Fox has given animated comedy Bob’s Burgers a back-nine order ahead of the series’ second-season launch in January. Bob’s Burgers premiered in midseason and its initial second-season renewal was for 13 episodes. “Last season, Bob’s Burgers infused our Sunday lineup with a fresh new voice that was fully embraced by our Animation Domination fans,” Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said. “Loren Bouchard, Jim Dauterive and the team have done an amazing job with the show.” Bouchard created the series, from 20th TV, and is executive producing/writing with Dauterive. Bob’s Burgers follows third-generation restaurateur Bob (the voice of H. Jon Benjamin) as he runs his own burger joint with the help of his wife and their three kids. The series’ voice cast also includes John Roberts, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman and Kristen Schaal. Upcoming guest voices include Kevin Kline as Bob’s eccentric landlord Mr. Fischoeder; Sarah...

I love digital comics. I actually prefer them over print. This may cause a bit of an outcry among traditionalists, but really think about it; in this day and age most comics are created digitally anyway. Converting them to print actually reduces their quality, however minute. Since the launch of The New 52, every publisher has jumped on the same-day-digital train that has been so successful for DC Comics. This is good news for the industry, as it expands the reach of comics without effecting the cost to the publishers.
This enthusiasm has been reflected in sales through digital distributor, ComiXology. For six weeks Comics by comiXology hass been the top grossing iPad app in Apple’s app store. Check out the press release below for the full details.

Comedian John Roberts made friends with the internet a long time ago, turning his demented characters into viral sensations simply because they were so well-executed. Like, how could you not believe this guy — dressed in anything but traditional drag, by any stretch of the imagination — was bitchy tween Debra or vaguely ethnic Tri-State Area Mom? Roberts’s ability to inhabit these weirdly complex female characters made him an instant hit on YouTube because Jeez Look At Him! Thank goodness he’s back, and he’s brought the Mom character with him. This time, we get to see her in a pool, and it’s glorious. “I’m not going all the way in.” — Your Mom at the pool, every summer...

If past years are any indication, Comic-Con will begin releasing its official 2011 panel schedule later today (Wednesday) with the schedule for Preview Night, Wednesday, July 20. If that happens then we can expect them to follow suit for the rest of the days, so that Thursday will see the release of the Thursday of Con schedule, etc., through Sunday.
Once the official schedules are posted these “TV and Movie Panels and Screenings Updates” will be scaled back to just the date, time, title, and location, since the rest of the information and So Much More (including comics panels, autograph signings, etc.) will be available on the Comic-Con schedule link we’ll provide. Consider this, then, the last of the extremely long posts, and hopefully we’ll be getting that official schedule soon.
