It's sufficiently early now that the hangover is kicking in, but sufficiently late that the fact that I've run out of milk is a hurdle not yet surmountable. The 2017 Glasgow Short Film Festival was a few hours ago, and here is what went down: -
Drink! Festival sponsors Brooklyn Brewery and Auchentoshan Distillery provided ingredients for a cocktail that started with an Ipa with a pretty high Ibu and a just shy of ridiculous Abv, that was being mixed with a honey syrup and lemon and whisky, and while your fearless correspondent had a can of the former and a shot of the last, the stuff in the middle was too close to nutrition for journalistic stereotype and so was avoided. Free drink was credited as one of the causes of free-wheeling speeches from festival apparatchik Morvern Cunningham - highlights...

Glasgow's 2016 Short Film Festival ended with the traditional awards bash. Among the many thanked were drink sponsors Blue Moon and Black Cow, the former a beer you are encouraged to try with a slice of orange, the latter a vodka that is made from milk sugars. This was a prompt for some jocularity, as Glasgow's Centre for Contemporary Arts, which hosted the ceremony, many of the screenings, and the festival's offices is served by a vegan café.
Festival apparatchik Morven Robinson described it as a "very non-boring festival", and clarified some of the dialogue from the festival's trailer in particular the phrase "scooby" which is Glaswegian rhyming slang - the etymology is Scooby-Doo, "clue". She was to provide further services as interpreter, but this was a cue for festival director Matt Lloyd to take the stage as the "sincere and boring one". The former certainly,...

Flamingo
Events took a dramatic twist yesterday when a film screening at the Glasgow Short Film Festival shocked viewers so much that two of them fainted. Bryan M Ferguson's Flamingo, which was screening in the Skinny Short Film Competition in support of his award-winning Caustic Gulp, led to one person becoming instantly unconscious whilst another became so pale and limp as to require urgent assistance.
Eye For Film's Andrew Robertson, who described the film as 'visceral', said that the woman behind him reacted so dramatically to what was shown onscreen that he was afraid she was going to throw up on his coat.
Flamingo, which stars Katie Armstrong, Stascia Bantouvakis, Kristopher Curran and Joanne Pirrie, tells the story of an aspiring dancer who befriends an obscene phone caller after they discover a mutual interest in self-amputation.
Fortunately, audience reactions as dramatic as this are rare. The last one we're aware of.

The BBC has also released this tantalising text about the show...
"Back in the days when the internet was a little baby, and we had to make our own entertainment… we all watched a programme called Robot Wars. Full of clever people who made robots in their garages that smashed each other up for fun. In the arena keeping order were a team of angry robots called the House Robots.

If you've ever been dared to walk into a dark bathroom and say Bloody Mary three times while looking into the mirror, you know how hard it is to get that last one out. As an exercise in pure tension there's nothing quite like it.
Don't Say Her Name is a new short film by Andrew Robertson of Passerby Films that, without being overly complex, manages to capture the true tension of the Bloody Mary experience. In short, it had me on the edge of my seat.
Synopsis:
Don't say her name into the mirror. She'll pull you in and take you with her to hell.
Check it out in full.

The closing party at the Gsff Photo: Andrew Robertson
Glasgow's 2015 Short Film Festival ended at its award ceremony, a highlight that saw deserved winners selected from a very strong programme. There were five awards in total, three jury prizes, including the new Channel 4 award for Innovation in Storytelling, and two audience awards. As capstone to the Festival the ceremony also included the top three from a Glasgow School of Art one minute film competiton, as well as films made as part of the Gsff 'Anijam', apparently the first Scottish one, where animated films were made in just 48 hours.
Festival apparatchik Morvern Cunningham wore sunglasses for much of the ceremony, not solely because of a whole-hearted embrace of the short-film celebrity champagne circuit but because of what appeared to be conjunctivitus - she was, however, as chirpy as she'd been throughout the week's events as she heckled Festival Director Matt Lloyd...

As the year draws to a close, cinematic lists abound, with the likes of Boyhood, Grand Budapest Hotel and Under The Skin playing leapfrog depending on the top 10 you look at. But what about the films you didn't see? There has never been more choice in UK cinemas, with more films being released each month than there are days to see them in - 40 in December and even more than that in November - but it's still incredibly tough for even great films to make it to market. Eye For Film's writers have picked some of their favourites from the festival circuit that deserve distribution but, at the moment, will not be coming to a cinema near you in 2015....

A fifth series of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip has been commissioned by BBC One.
Pairs of celebrities, backed by the show's experts, will attempt to find profitable antiques in 20 new episodes next year.
The show has previously featured famous faces such as Sir Terry Wogan, Emilia Fox, Jodie Kidd, Honor Blackman and Britt Ekland.
Andrew Robertson of producers Stv Productions said: "The recommission of another 20 episodes of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip shows what a popular addition it is to the BBC Two schedule. We look forward to putting more celebrities through their antiques buying paces in series five."
The fourth series of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip attracted an average of 1.5 million viewers.
Antiques Road Trip was renewed for four more series by BBC One earlier this year.

Thursday morning at the Glasgow Film Festival offered the chance to catch up on some of the best films screened there so far, plus some strong new ones, including the thoughtful drama about assisted dying A Few Hours Of Spring. A young women's boyfriend falling for another man called for a re-examination of contemporary relationships in The Sex Of The Angels, sexual tension turned domesticity upside down in In The House, and there was tense drama in A Hijacking (review coming soon), Andrew Robertson's favourite of the festival so far.

Creative agency Radar has been appointed to the online advertising account of Abu Dhabi Tourism locally.
The announcement:
Surry Hills based creative agency Radar is feeling more than just the summer heat, recently winning Abu Dhabi Tourism’s local online advertising account.
The win involves the creation and development of two streams of communications, B2C (travelers) and B2B (travel agents), and covers multi-channel online advertising and microsites for both. After commencing strategy work and a first phase market test in mid-December last year, which outperformed all Kpi’s, the full campaign is set to launch in early March.
Radar Director Andrew Robertson says, “Coinciding with a massive investment in infrastructure and tourism by the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi is fast emerging as one of the world’s most exciting holiday destinations for 2013. To differentiate Abu Dhabi from other Arab emirates we’re positioning it around luxurious, adventurous and cultural experiences,...

After a long, long week in Cannes, Mumbrella managing editor Robin Hicks has some awards of his own to give out.
So, the crazy advertising circus that is Cannes is over. And all the awards have been given out. But no one likes going home empty handed.
Here are the Unofficial Cannes Lions winners…
Juiciest rumour – grand prix: The big networks have been leaning on the judges to vote for their own network’s entries.
Juiciest rumour – gold: Haymarket will close the print editions of ‘advertising Bible’ Campaign or Marketing in the UK and make them online only.
Juiciest rumour – silver: Block voting by networks will lead to a boycott of Cannes.
Biggest criticism of Cannes – grand prix: Presentations were repeats of those given at other festivals earlier in the year.
Biggest criticism of Cannes – gold: The work wasn’t as good as last year.

David Lubars, chief creative of Bbdo North America, with global Bbdo boss Andrew Robertson and Bruce McColl in Cannes today
One of the world’s most powerful clients, Mars Cmo Bruce McColl, an Australian, has said that Aussie marketers will not progress in their careers unless they look outside of Australia for ideas and inspiration.
In an interview with Mumbrella, McColl said that because the Australian marketing scene lacks scale, overseas influence is crucial for marketers to develop.
“Australia lacks scale. So it’s important that marketers tap into global networks when they can – to get a sense of perspective. You can’t be a good marketer and grow as a professional unless you explore outside your sphere,” said McColl, whose employer was named advertiser of the year for Cannes 2012.
