A plug for commercial exterminators everywhere, William Alland’s titanic hairy spider provided plenty of chills for 1950s drive-ins, delivering exactly the naïve monster thrills teenagers craved. John Agar and Mara Corday do what they can with the clunker script and Jack Arnold’s direction, while Leo G. Carroll saves face by retreating below a rubber mask that makes him look like Droopy Dog. But for fans that like their monsters as big as the Great Outdoors, Clifford Stine and David Horsley’s startling special effects provide a spider-verse of sensational, surreal insect fear.

The 2016 blu ray release of the Frankenstein and Wolf Man Legacy Collections was a moment of celebration for movie and monster lovers everywhere, bringing together all the golden age appearances of Frankenstein’s misbegotten creation and Larry Talbot’s hairy alter-ego. Universal Studios treated those dusty creature features to luminous restorations; from Bride of Frankenstein to She Wolf of London, these essential artifacts never looked less than impeccable and, at times, even ravishing. Colin Clive’s frenzied declaration, “It’s Alive!”, never felt more appropriate.
Now Universal has turned their attention to their other legendary franchise players, Dracula, the sharp-dressed but undead ladies’ man and Im-ho-tep, the cursed Egyptian priest who loved not wisely but too well.

There wasn't an NBA Finals game on, but it was a good night for ABC nonetheless. The debut of the small screen version of Uncle Buck (1.5/6) scored the Disney-owned net the best summer comedy launch among adults 18-49 since the animated The Goode Family opened on May 27, 2009 with a 1.6/4. Uncle Buck also topped last year's NBC summer comedy debut of the now shuttered Mr. Robinson, which pulled in a 1.1/4 for its double episode premiere on August 5 last year in the same…...

When you tell people you watch Saturday Night Live, there's inevitably someone that will mock you for watching it. None of these complaints are new. None of these complaints are true.

NBC is the first broadcast network to unveil its schedule for the 2016-17 TV season, and the big news on the returning-show front is the Peacock’s decision to shift Blindspot from Monday-at-10 to Wednesdays-at-8, where it will fill the void left by the just-cancelled Mysteries of Laura. Replacing Blindspot in the coveted post-Voice perch will be Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan’s new sci-fi drama Timeless.

NBC made decisions today about two of its summer sitcoms, and unfortunately for one of the series, it’s not all good news. The Peacock has renewed The Carmichael Show for a second season and cancelled Mr. Robinson. Both comedies premiered this summer on NBC, airing six-episode first seasons over the course of just three weeks, and while the two series did somewhat similar in the ratings, The Carmichael Show also boasted strong praise from critics, including our own Randy Dankievitch. “We’re extremely proud of The Carmichael Show and Jerrod’s voice and point of view is a breath of fresh air in a comedy series,” NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said. “This show made a big impact with viewers and critics because it’s funny and relatable but also because it’s fearless about discussing issues that are significant in the world today. NBC has proved that its comedies can get fairly decent ratings — it just has to launch them out of “America’s Got Talent” during the summertime. The network’s “The Carmichael Show” hauled in 4.8 million total viewers with its premiere episode on Wednesday, the most eyeballs for a broadcast summer comedy debut in eight years. That distinction previously belonged to NBC’s “Mr. Robinson,” which launched with the same lead-in earlier this month to 4.6 million viewers. In the key 18-49 demographic, “Carmichael” bowed slightly slower than “Mr. Robinson” had. A second episode of “Carmichael” dropped down to 4.1 million viewers last night.

Earlier this summer, NBC made a last-minute schedule switch on sitcoms "Mr. Robinson" and "The Carmichael Show." Originally set to air together over six weeks, NBC instead turned them into mini-binges — or, more realistically, super-fast Summer Burn-Off Theatre — by having "Mr. Robinson" air as a double feature for three weeks, followed by "Carmichael Show" doing the same. This seemed like a weird reshuffling of the deck chairs on a pair of sinking ships: both shows had been in development in some form or other for two years and were already being dumped at a time late in the summer when even broadcast executives who boast about year-round programming don't like to debut things. But the strange approach may have worked. "Mr. Robinson" was terrible, but its ratings were surprisingly decent and it could get renewed. And by splitting the two shows up, NBC did a favor to "Carmichael Show," which is a sharper,...

NBC won Wednesday outright despite “Mr. Robinson” losing some premiere steam and “Last Comic Standing” suffering behind it. It was a close one though, as CBS was a tight runner-up in both the key 18-49 demographic and in total viewers. Had “Extant” not slipped, things may have shaken out differently. While “Mr. Robinson” was down 17 percent in the demo at 9 from its debut, a back-to-back episode matched the rating from last week’s second episode. Even when America's Got Talent (1.4/6) takes a hit, it still delivers for NBC. Down 22% last night among adults 18-49 from its July 29 10th anniversary show, the "World's Got Talent" version of Agt still pulled in the second-highest rating and the biggest audience of Wednesday night with 6.88 million watching. That resulted in the 9 Pm debut of Mr. Robinson (1.2/4) drawing the best summer comedy debut viewership since 2007 with 4.6 million tuning in. In fact, as NBC is…...

The struggle is real, especially for unfeasibly hot — but not especially tall — folks who’ve been held back from lessons in tooching, booching, smizing and acting the damn fool on national television all because of their height.
No need to break into a rousing chorus of “We Shall Overcome,” however, as Cycle 22 of America’s Next Top Model is now an equal-opportunity humiliator. Short or tall, hearing-impaired or personality-impaired, everyone has a chance to throw him- or herself into a giant foam pit and root around for balls emblazoned with their own names, balls that tell them “You’re one...

Happy Tuesday, Boys & Girls! Alan touched down in Beverly Hills for the TCA Summer Press Tour and, working on no sleep, he willingly submitted to a lunchtime podcast. As always, this sounds much worse than when we record other ways, but we are in the same room together. Promise. In this week's podcast, we talk a bit about the press tour thus far in several contexts. We reviewed NBC's "Mr. Robinson" probably in more depth than it deserves. And we talked extensively about the season finales for "Halt and Catch Fire" and "UnReal" And we talked about the "Everybody Loves Raymond" finale as part of our Summer Finale ReWatch. And I recommend staying until the end for a strange thing we randomly and inexplicably did. Today's breakdown: Quick TCA Blather (00:01:30 - 00:04:00) "Mr. Robinson" (00:04:00 - 00:13:10) Listener Mail - Press Tour Food (00:13:...

"The Carmichael Show" will follow the same strategy and air back-to-back episodes in the timeslot for its Wednesday, Aug. 26 launch. Initially, both were supposed to air in the same hour-long-block of comedies with "Mr. Robinson" premiering at 9 pm, immediately followed by "The Carmichael Show" at 9:30 pm, on Aug. 5. NBC has set Wednesday, August 5, for a new hour-long block of comedies with "Mr. Robinson" premiering at 9 pm, immediately followed by "The Carmichael Show" at 9:30 pm. And at 9:30pm, "The Carmichael Show," which hails from Jerrod Carmichael and Nick Stoller (“Neighbors”), is an irreverent sitcom inspired by Jerrod’s real-life relationships with his say-anything, contrarian father (played by David Alan Grier), his therapist-in training girlfriend (Amber Stevens), his ever-hustling brother (Lil Rel), and his mother (Loretta Devine), who is always, always, always right with Jesus. I appreciate that NBC at least let one other piece of pre-upfronts news break -- Rip, "Hart of Dixie" -- between piecemeal announcements for new comedy pilots. Just hours after picking up the multi-cam comedy "People Are Talking," NBC has added to what is essentially a bare comedy cupboard with series orders for "Crowded" and "Superstore." The trio of Thursday comedies join the strange "Coach" reboot and Eva Longoria's "Telenovela" in NBC's 2015-2016 in-season plans, while "Mr. Robinson" and "The Carmichael Show" are premiering limited runs in August. It's at least conceivable that NBC may not renew a single one of its existing comedies, though "Undateable" is probably reasonably safe for a third season pickup. Let's look at the two new comedies, both ensembles featuring a slew of TV favorites. "Superstore" marks America Ferrara's return to the small screen and also brings Ben Feldman back to NBC just one...

A review of tonight's "The Americans" — which FX renewed for a fourth season yesterday — coming up just as soon as I'm trying to turn you into a travel agent... "You're... spies?" -Paige About the only negative thing I can say about "Stingers" is that I wish there had been more of it — or, at least, more of the Paige storyline, and perhaps less of the season's many other plots. Whether that would have meant devoting the whole episode to that conversation and its aftermath, or simply not cutting away to other subplots once her parents spilled the Soviet beans, I think an incredibly powerful episode would have felt even stronger if we weren't cutting away to Stan at the office, or Arkady and Tatiana discussing what's going on with Zinaida (who is confirmed as a double agent early in the episode). Fields and Weisberg (who get script credit for one...

NBC, which has struggled with comedy this season, is making a major push in the genre in the summer with two new series, Mr. Robinson and The Carmichael Show, set to debut in August. They will be joined by Welcome To Sweden, which will return for a second season in July. Last summer, NBC premiered Welcome To Sweden and Undateable, both of which were renewed for a second season. Summer traditionally has been a reserved territory for burn-off shows, so Undateable‘s solid…...

SNL. Saturday Night Live. The place where comedy and comedians make it. Just like the city it quintessentially represents, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
And we have forty years to look at. As you might have seen, SNL is turning forty this weekend, and what better way to celebrate than to get the whole gang back together and make it a night that will go down in the history books? Anyone who’s anyone is going to the reunion (well, that is anyone besides Eddie Murphy of course) and it’s sure to bring back everything that made the show what it is today.
So here we look at some of the best sketches that has ever graced our eyes thanks to Lorne Michael’s marvelous show filler for Johnny Carson. (That’s right- the whole reason the show exists is because Carson wanted...
