Sam Rockett was born on April 24, 1919 in Milborne St Andrew, Dorset, England, UK. He is known for Black Tide (1958). He died on November 9, 1989 in Folkestone, Kent, England, UK.
Channel swimmer, who was the first Briton to finish the first Daily Mail International Channel Race in August 1950. Rockett was a well-known water polo player whom had played for his county on several occasions. He decided to enter the Daily Mail Race as a new challenge.
Rockett wrote the renowned book It's Cold in the Channel, based on his Channel swimming experiences.
"The Sam Rockett Collection" containing written material, photographs and other artifacts relating to Sam Rockett is held at the Dover Museum. The material was donated by Rockett's daughter, Janet Johnson.
At the time of his successful channel swim (1950), Rockett was employed as a factory foreman in the Plastics Division at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI).
