In the first of a new series of Rewind reviews looking back at the career of writer/director Ben Wheatley, Chris takes a look at his 2011 hit, Kill List.
Stars: Neil Maskell, Michael Smiley, MyAnna Buring, Harry Simpson, Emma Fryer, Struan Rodger | Written by Ben Wheatley, Amy Jump | Directed by Ben Wheatley
My initial terror when re-watching Kill List was that I realised it had been almost 10 years since I had seen it in a Cineworld in South West London..!
Kill List starts as a bit of realist, family drama, with our ex-soldier and “hero” Jay (Neil Maskell) out of work. He enjoys playing sword fighting with his beloved son but is under great pressure to get back to work from his wife as their savings dwindle. seemingly haunted by a mission in Kiev, Jay loves his family but is quite possibly suffering from Ptsd. His wife then arranges a little dinner party,...

A review of tonight's Game of Thrones coming up just as soon as you punch me in the face the next time I have an idea like that... "We all fail sometimes." -Jaime You guys... Jon Snow is alive! I know, I know... I'm as shocked as you are. Which is to say, not particularly shocked, and slightly disappointed at how "Home" presented the resurrection we all knew was coming. Look, George R.R. Martin did the show no favors with that particular cliffhanger. Even before the Nsa started tracking Kit Harington's movements in and out of Belfast, GoT fandom at large had all come to the conclusion that Jon Snow's death wouldn't stick, since it would be awful storytelling to eliminate the only relevant character in what was increasingly turning out to be the most important locale in the entire show(*). And most of us assumed that Melisandre would probably be involved,...

This April, Bran returns to “Game of Thrones.” In the first teaser trailer for the Season 6, you can hear the young warg having a discussion with Max von Sydown about the nature of time. von Sydown takes over for Struan Rodger, who played the Three-Eyed Raven in the Season 4 episode “The Children.” You know, the guy stuck in the tree. Warning: “Game Of Thrones” Spoilers Beyond This Point. After a season away from the Children of the Forest and the weir woods and the Still Missing Coldhands, “Game of Thrones” is returning to the ancient magic of Westeros in a big way. Having Bran discuss the nature of the past “The ink is dry,” opens the door to many exciting flashbacks. Once Bran takes over for Brynden Rivers in the weirwood tree, will the show delve into the machinations of how current events came to be? Will we see the Knight of the Laughing Tree?...

“Dead is dead as dead as dead. He be dead. Yes. From everything I’ve seen, heard, read, Jon Snow is indeed dead,” HBO's Michael Lombardo recently said. So let's all move on and stop speculating about what Kit Harington's hair length might mean and move on because there is actual real and exciting news in the world of "Game Of Thrones." Ian McShane and the goddamn legendary Max Von Sydow have joined the world of Westeros for season six. While the "Deadwood" star's role is being kept under wraps (apparently it's quite small, but significant), Von Sydow will take the part of Bran Stark's tutor, Three-Eyed Raven (previously played by Struan Rodger in a couple of season four episodes). He's also not expected to be seen a lot in season six. So there you go. Jon Snow is dead, long live McShane and Sydow. [Entertainment Weekly]...

The "Game of Thrones" news continues to break. Shortly after learning Ian McShane is joining the sixth season in an, as-of-yet, unspecified role, we now know a two-time Oscar nominee is stepping in to fill a pivotal role in season six of the series. Max von Sydow, most famous for his roles in his films with Ingmar Bergman -- The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries and The Virgin Spring to name a few -- as well as the title role in The Exorcist and soon to capture geek attention with his role in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, is reportedly already on set and filming scenes. Entertainment Weekly reports he won't have an abundance of screen time but his role will be important. This sounds an awful lot like what was reported about McShane's role but the major difference is we already know exactly who von Sydow is set to play.

Watch out, Bran Stark - Max von Sydow is coming for you!
The legendary actor ("Minority Report," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens") is joining the cast of "Game of Thrones" in season 6 as the Three-Eyed Raven, a mystical being who teaches Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) to use his gifts as a warg. The character was last seen in the season 4 finale, played by Struan Rodger.
Von Sydow won't have a ton of screen time, but will be highly influential Bran's storyline was put on hold this year, to allow space for other plots, but the young Stark will return having spent time under the Three-Eyed Raven's tutelage. Showrunner David Benioff likened it to Luke Skywalker's training with Yoda.
"Like, it would be far less interesting, after 'The Empire Strikes Back' to have an hour-long movie in between 'Empire' and 'Return of the Jedi' where Luke is training," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum adds her good looks to CBS’ Supergirl, joining the Lane family as Lucy, the sister of Lois Lane, in a recurring roll.
THR reports that Lucy has similar qualities to her big sis, being both brash, beautiful, and armed with a sense of humor. She also has a connection with Jimmy Olsen. Look out for Jenna to debut in the third episode of the first season, which kicks off on CBS on October 26th with the enviable lead-in from the mega-popular (and perhaps audience sharing) Big Bang Theory.

Max von Sydow is one of Hollywood's most experienced and talented veteran actors, boasting a fantastic career that includes The Exorcist, Minority Report, Shutter Island and even the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now it appears the two-time Academy Award nominated actor has turned his attention to the small screen. The Game of Thrones actress will guest star in an episode of the sci-fi drama when it returns for its ninth run in the autumn.
Williams, whose role has not yet been revealed, said: "I'm so excited to be working on Doctor Who as it's such a big and important part of British culture.
"I can't wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we'll be shooting not too far from my home town."
Showrunner Steven Moffat added: "We're thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who. It's not possible to say too much about who or what she's playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways.
"This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.

Do we really need to tell you this is a spoiler? This is a spoiler. Or rather, it's a story about what not to expect in Game Of Thrones' fifth season when it premieres next year. In a surprising twist, given the drama at the end of Season 4, actor Kristian Nairn has revealed that he and Isaac Hempstead-Wright have got the year off, meaning that we won't be returning to the Bran and Hodor strand of the story until at least Season 6.This almost certainly means we won't be seeing Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick), the Three-Eyed Crow (Struan Rodger) or the Child of the Forest (Octavia Selena Alexandru) either, since they were all with Bran and Hodor when we left them in the cave under the Heart Tree beyond The Wall. They'll be there for a good while longer while the series catches up with other business, but that's...

A review of tonight's "Game of Thrones" coming up just as soon as I do a poor job hobbling the horses... "I am your son. I have always been your son." -Tyrion In previous seasons, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have tended to use the finales in the same way that "The Sopranos" and "The Wire" so often did: as a time for reflection after the climactic events of the different episodes 9, and as a preview of what's to come in the following season. "The Children" didn't work quite like that, in part because "The Watchers on the Wall" wasn't a climax of the season in the way that "Baelor," "Blackwater" and "The Rains of Castamere" were. It was exciting action, but it resolved exactly nothing (other than the Jon Snow/Ygritte romance), and left most matters up to "The Children" to either dispense with or push forward into season 5. As such,...

Warning: Spoilers for "Game of Thrones" Season 4 and the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books up through "A Dance With Dragons" contained in this article.
It seems as though "Game of Thrones" Season 4 will be delving deep into Bran Stark's (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) timeline. The recently released trailer and previous casting news points to the young Stark's storyline moving forward into "A Dance With Dragons" territory.
In the above still from the Season 4 trailer, Bran touches a weirwood while Hodor looks on behind him. While this could be from a different scene in the upcoming season, it seems likely that this moment comes after Bran has met Bloodraven.
Bloodraven, also known in the books as the Three-Eyed Crow and in the show as the Three-Eyed Raven, will be played by Struan Rodger in Season 4. The introduction of his character alone is confirmation that Bran's storyline will be progressing farther than...

When the reigning king of Westeros steps down – or, more likely, is forcibly removed – it will also be the swan song for Jack Gleeson, the actor who plays King Joffery Baratheon on HBO's Game of Thrones. Gleeson told the Irish Independent that he plans to retire from acting when his turn on the show wraps up, saying he prefers a simple life over the glitz of Hollywood.

(Cbr) There are new eyes coming to the world of Westeros — a thousand eyes, and one. British actor Struan Rodger has reportedly landed a role on "Game of Thrones" for the upcoming fourth season of the hit HBO fantasy drama. On his online resume, Rodger lists the role of “Three-Eyed Raven” in connection to "Thrones," a major development for readers of George R.R. Martin’s "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels. Some spoilery details about the character ahead, right after the crow. Still here? Ok, let’s get into it. In those books, the “Three-Eyed Raven,” also called Bloodraven, also...

Some "Game of Thrones" storylines are catching up to the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series faster than others. British actor Struan Rodger has been cast as a major character in Bran's storyline who is introduced in the fifth "ASoIaF" novel, "A Dance with Dragons." Be warned, some spoilers lie ahead.
On Rodger's online resume, his "Game of Thrones" character is listed as "Three-Eyed Raven," and it seems like he appears in multiple episodes. Since an actual three-eyed raven already appeared in Bran's storyline in previous seasons as an animal, it seems safe to assume that Rodger's version of the character will be the person Jojen and Meera are taking Bran to.
If that is the case, it seems likely that Rodger is actually playing Lord Brynden Rivers, better known as Bloodraven. The character first appeared in "A Dance with Dragons" as the human form of the three-eyed...

I'm sure fans will recall the 3-eyed raven (crow in the books) from Bran Stark's visions in a couple of episodes of the show, and those that read the source novels will be even more familiar with him. Well now he's actually been given a voice (and maybe more?) for the fourth season. According to his agency resume, British actor Struan Rodger has been cast in the role of "the Three-Eyed Raven." This character manifests in Bran's visions after he's left crippled by his fall in the very first episode, and seems to hold to key to him realizing his destiny. Whether Rodger will only provide the voice of the bird, or actually play the raven as a human is unknown. Rodger is a familiar face in British film and television, with roles in the likes of The Thick Of It, Law and Order UK and Doctor Who.

Rather surprisingly given its small budget and lack of household, or in some cases even recognizable names, Ben Wheatley’s Kill List made quite a critical splash when it was released two years ago. The follow up to his rather porous debut Down Terrace, the story of two hitmen, three targets and an escalation from moody and sinister intent into downright crazy horror proved to be one of British cinema’s most devise releases for years. To say it was a film the critics loved while the public hated would be a crass oversimplification. It would be far more accurate to say it divided both bases quite dramatically, with virtually no middle ground. Its abrupt, mind boggling ending in particular, while providing a traumatic final twist, drew as much disdain for its break from basic storytelling narrative then it did twisted affection for its visceral impact. What the detractors perhaps didn’t quite figure,...

Chicago – Graphic violence is a double-edged sword. It can shock viewers into acknowledging the tragic nature of carnage so often belittled in mainstream cinema, yet it can also repel viewers straight out of the theater before the end credits roll. Ben Wheatley’s “Kill List” is far from the most violent film in recent memory, but its few instances of onscreen bloodshed are unbearably savage.
This makes the film a perfect fit for IFC Midnight, which has specialized in distributing ultra-grisly indies. “Kill List” is one of their better releases this year, but it lacks the emotional and psychological depth of a film like Justin Kurzel’s “The Snowtown Murders.” Whereas Kurzel’s fact-based tale was about people who seemed frighteningly human, Wheatley’s film centers on a group of characters so witless that audiences may find it difficult to become involved in their plight. “Kill List” is entertaining enough...

Some films find a way to surprise, intrigue, and confound all at once, leading you down a rabbit hole that becomes bleaker with every step as it uncovers secrets you’re ill prepared to understand because the characters themselves are too. What starts off as though a psychological horror, burning slow to introduce a seemingly normal suburban family going through a rough patch with the British economy in recession soon turns into a bloody romp that is almost too serious in its actions. Between the over-the-top marital strife snowballing into shouting fits that scare their young son and make you wonder why Jay (Neil Maskell) and Shel (MyAnna Buring) are still together and the comical back-and-forth of he and an old war buddy Gal (Michael Smiley), you become lulled into a false sense of humor-tinged chaos before Kill List’s truer, darker intentions are made clear.

Suburban thriller meets The Wicker Man in Ben Wheatley's cleverly unsettling British horror movie
A year ago last month, Down Terrace, the first film for the cinema by the British director of TV series and commercials, Ben Wheatley, was given a limited distribution. Made on the thinnest of shoestrings for an alleged £6,000 (the same sum that in 1998 was said to be the notional budget of Christopher Nolan's Following), it was a highly entertaining black comedy largely set in the cosy suburban house of a Brighton gangster, his devoted wife and surly, grown-up son who has recently been acquitted of an unnamed crime.
A succession of low-life characters comes and goes, semi-improvised euphemistic small talk flows, and several people disappear to end up in graves on the South Downs. I described the film as "Brighton Rock reworked in the style of The Royle Family", and it made me eager to see his next film,...

Director Ben Wheatley follows up the superb Down Terrace with the intense and disturbing horror, Kill List. Here's Michael's review...
Note: Kill List is a film that works wonderfully with its surprises left intact. The following review doesn’t delve too deeply into spoiler territory, but if you prefer to experience the film unspoiled, then we recommend you just go and see it.
Just over a year ago, we here at Den of Geek were taken completely by surprise by Down Terrace, a low-budget, domestic crime drama directed, co-edited and co-written by Ben Wheatley.
With its understated charm, and disarming sense of humour, the film stood out among the dreary drama and urban grime that clog up the British film industry - although, unfortunately, it didn’t get half the attention it deserved. Thankfully, this is being rectified for Wheatley’s follow-up, the surreal thriller-horror mish-mash Kill List.

Kill List looks really good. The teaser trailers for Kill List did nothing for me (nothing was shown, which is why they are not posted) but the full movie trailer makes this film look like a good crime movie.
Kill List also stars Ben Crompton and Robin Hill.
