Having been released in 2013 in its home country of Venezuela, supernatural thriller La Casa del Fin del Los Tiempos (aka 'The House at The End of Time') has already seen major success there as being the highest grossing thriller that they've had.
Now that it's overseas and on most VOD platforms, La Casa seems to be marketed as a horror film, which it really isn't, but the film's ability to make you think you're going one way until it takes a sharp left into crazytown is what makes this film outstanding.
After serving 30 years in prison for the alleged murder of her husband, Juan Jose (Gonzalo Cubero) and son, Leopoldo (Rosmel Bustamante), Dulce (Ruddy Rodriguez) is released to spend the rest of her sentence in her home where these supposed crimes took place. The House at the End of Time is a rare cultural beast – a Venezuelan chiller. Consequently, it’s far from a traditional genre flick, whereby it’s a mesmerising feat of time shifts melded with the supernatural to work towards developing the real human themes of regret and hope. Despite this, writer and director Alejandro Hidalgo is intelligent enough to still throw you off the main story scent with a very scary and atmospheric opening. A terrified mother wakes to find a mysterious scar down her cheek, discovers the dead body of her husband lying in her basement and is helpless to stop her son disappear into the darkness – snatched into the never, never by an unseen hand.

★★☆☆☆ You know the drill. A family moves into a large house. It seems perfect. Things are good, for a while. Kids start to complain about strange noises. Parents are spooked. Then it all ends in brutal bloody murder. It might sound like your common-or-garden chiller, but there is much to admire in The House at the End of Time (2013), a Venezuelan genre picture by Alejandro Hildago. If in concept rather than in execution. Housewife Dulce (Ruddy Rodríguez) is sent down for a thirty-year stretch. The police discovered her husband knifed to death and their child missing. She pleaded innocent, but the crime looked too much like a run-of-the-mill domestic incident gone tragically awry.

Indie horror Faults and Venezuelan chiller The House At The End Of Time are two of the films in this month's Bottom Shelf...
Summer holidays, barbecues on the beach and weekends decimated by relentless weddings: this is August for some. For other, more discerning types, it is about Frightfest, otherwise known as the chance to spend those rare sunny days ensconced in a darkened room for a horror movie marathon. This year’s Leicester Square event featured the usual mix of gonzo gore, copycat-killings and premiere screenings of future favourites; we managed to catch a few highlights.
The latest film from writer and director Riley Stearns (Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s husband, fact fans), Faults, received a European premiere last month. Massively enjoyable from start to finish, Stearns’ black comedy mostly eschews the genre necessity of scattergun bloody slayings in favour of an intelligent script focusing on the gaping voids left in desperate characters’ lives.

The House at the End of Time is one of the most inventive supernatural thrillers to come along in a while - an impressive, confident and creepy debut from Venezuelan writer-director Alejandro Hidalgo. This fresh voice in the genre adopts many of the usual genre tropes, however, he crafts them in a relentless, meticulous manner to serve a story that is full of shocking twists and turns.
The film doesn't waste any time either. In the first 10 minutes it effectively manages to provide two solid jolts involving leading lady Ruddy Rodriguez (as "Dulce") who awakens on the floor of her home bleeding and surrounded by shards of a broken mirror. Moments later, we find Dulce being arrested for the murder of her husband and son. Flash forward 30 years later and Dulce is an elderly woman being released from prison but who is under house arrest in the very home she supposedly committed her crimes in.
