Alexandra Keddie, Drew Weston and Gemma Bird Matheson in ‘The Housemate.’
Frustrated with the scarcity of job offers, two years ago young actors Gemma Bird Matheson and Alexandra Keddie decided to launch their own production company, Chips & Gravy Films.
Their maiden production was The Housemate, an affectionate take on The Bachelor. They spent several thousand dollars of their own money to make a 4-minute teaser, in which they played friends who are searching for the housemate of their dreams, posted it online and got 260,000 views in the first week.
So they sent the teaser to Rick Kalowski, then the ABC’s head of comedy, who called them within 30 minutes and quickly commissioned a series of 6 x 5′ episodes for iview.
Since then the duo have created four or five projects which are in development with Screen Australia, while Matheson also performs in plays (currently the Griffin Theatre Company’s Superheroes...

What’s your favourite Australian film of the last decade?
That’s one of the questions Aacta is putting to the general public over the coming week as voting opens for its new Audience Choice Awards.
In contention for the film award are: Peter Rabbit, Red Dog, The Sapphires, The Great Gatsby, The Water Diviner, The Dressmaker, Lion, Ride Like A Girl and Mad Max: Fury Road.
While many of those nominated correspond to the Academy’s own ‘Best Film’ winners over the past 10 years, there are some notable exclusions – 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge, 2018’s Sweet Country and 2019’s The Nightingale.
The Favourite TV Drama of The Decade category sees each broadcaster score two nods – bar Sbs, who were snubbed. They include 10’s Offspring and Neighbours, ABC’s Mystery Road and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Foxtel’s Top of the Lake and Wentworth, Seven’s Molly and Home and Away,...

Mark Rogers shoots film and television stills and key art in Australia and internationally. Here he shines some light on what he calls the best and the worst job on set, and outlines how lower budget films can maximise resources to ensure the best quality images.
The key challenge for a stills photographer is to shoot iconic images that capture the essence and emotion of a film. Other than the trailer, this is the only way the film can be marketed and communicated to audiences. These images are the first impression the public will have of a movie, and a hero still or poster can often be the most lasting image associated with it over time.

(L-r) Jon Bell, Catriona McKenzie and Andrew Dillon (Photo credit: Mark Rogers).
To his direct descendants and the wider Aboriginal community, Pemulwuy, Australia’s first Indigenous resistance fighter, was a martyr, a leader, a patriot and a warrior.
Putting the man and his deeds in a contemporary context, writer Jon Bell says: “If Australia was invaded tomorrow and one man managed to keep those invading forces confined to the city areas for 10 years, he would be enshrined in Australian lore and there would be a national holiday.”
Bell is part of a creative team of leading black and white figures who are preparing a biopic on Pemulwuy, a member of the Bidjigal clan who led the opposition to British forces’ attempts to take over traditional hunting grounds from the early years of the colony until he was shot dead in 1802.

Kate Mulvany as Frankie in ‘Lambs of God’ (Photo: Mark Rogers).
Kate Mulvany has a stellar CV as a playwright, screenwriter and stage, film and TV actor – but several years ago she was afraid that screen roles were drying up.
Happily that changed when she was cast as an Army captain who suspects the death of her husband in Afghanistan was covered up in the Foxtel/Goalpost Pictures’ drama Fighting Season.
Now she is on screen in Foxtel/Lingo Pictures’ miniseries Lambs of God as Frankie, the sister of Father Ignatius (Sam Reid), who is kidnapped by nuns played by Ann Dowd, Jessica Barden and Essie Davis.
Her acting career continues to flourish as she makes her Us TV series debut in Amazon’s The Hunt, which follows a group of Nazi-hunters living in New York City in 1977.

Scott’s Ryan’s professional hitman Ray Shoesmith is set for further adventures next year after FX Networks and Foxtel confirmed there will be a second season of Mr Inbetween.
A renewal was almost certain after the six-part comedy/action drama produced by Michele Bennett for Jungle Entertainment and Blue-Tongue Films posted strong ratings in the Us, averaging 2.25 million viewers across all linear and non-linear platforms.
The gain in total viewers for the first episode of the Nash Edgerton-directed show was 113 per cent over seven days, a bigger increase than that for the last six FX drama series premieres. The second episode registered a 110 per cent jump in total viewers.
Created and scripted by Ryan, the show co-stars Damon Herriman, Justin Rosniak, Brooke Satchwell, Jackson Tozer, Nicholas Cassim, Chika Yasumura and Matt Nable. Most of the cast is expected to return, with Bennett producing again.

It’s been five years since Prometheus, and while the bonkers Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Counsellor didn’t offer a lot of hope that Ridley Scott was going to improve on the sad and boring road he’d taken the Aliens universe down, The Martian did manage to ignite a spark of hope. Unfortunately, it seems The Martian had enough source material behind it, and owes its positives far more to Andy Weir, Drew Goddard, and Matt Damon.
Alien: Covenant manages to redouble all the misguided efforts of Prometheus, and worse still, is even more convinced that audiences are both brain dead and have never seen any other films.
We kick off with the hapless crew of the colony ship Covenant, who are en route to a well-researched planet where they plan to offload some 2,000 colonists to start a new life. The familiar android Walter (Michael Fassbender) patrols the ship,...

Nicole Kidman in ‘Lion’ (Courtesy: Mark Rogers/Long Way Productions)

Nothing is ever certain when it comes to predicting how the Oscars will shape up, but it seems as though Nicole Kidman is a slam dunk in this year’s race. The Lion star has already been nominated three times in the past — even snagging one win in the process — across categories and it seems as though a fourth is on the way. How often does this happen in the best actress and best supporting actress categories?
The reason a fourth nomination for Kidman seems inevitable is because the 49-year-old Australian-American has been nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award and a Satellite Award (losing both) as well as a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award (awaiting results). With those in the bag, an Oscar nomination is right around the corner — and this site’s namesake,...

Dev Patel stars in Lion. Photo credit: Mark Rogers; © Long Way Home Productions 2015
Lion tells the dramatic true story of Saroo Brierley, who as a five-year-old boy from a small Indian village becomes lost and alone in Kolkata, before being adopted by an Australian couple. As a young adult, Saroo began a seemingly impossible search for this birth mother and the remote village where he was born, with the help of a then-new technology called Google Earth.
Dev Patel, best known to audiences for Slumdog Millionaire and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, stars as the grown Saroo and delivers a powerful performance. Patel’s performance and the amazing true story itself are the greatest strength of Lion. Director Garth Davis opts for a chronological approach in telling Saroo’s story. Andrew Garfield stars as Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge. Photo Credit: Mark Rogers. © Cross Creek Pictures / Lionsgate
Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of Private Desmond Doss, a medic who won the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving 75 men on Okinawa during World War II. What sets this heroic story apart is that Doss was a pacifist who refused to even carry a gun, much less fire one, yet won the right to serve and then the respect of his fellow soldiers for his bravery and compassion.
Mel Gibson directs Hacksaw Ridge yet the film has the sepia-toned look and historic epic sensibility of a Clint Eastwood film. Patriotism, courage and faith are big themes in this war epic. However, by the time we reach the Okinawa battlefield, we definitely know we are watching a Mel Gibson film. Gibson’s taste for plenty of guts with the glory is legendary.

Hacksaw Ridge is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong.
As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
From Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson (Braveheart), here’s a first look at the powerful new trailer. The film will open in November – prior to Veterans Day 2016.
