'Ben-Hur' 1959 with Stephen Boyd and Charlton Heston: TCM's '31 Days of Oscar.' '31 Days of Oscar': 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Ben-Hur' are in, Paramount stars are out Today, Feb. 1, '16, Turner Classic Movies is kicking off the 21st edition of its “31 Days of Oscar.” While the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is being vociferously reviled for its “lack of diversity” – more on that appallingly myopic, self-serving, and double-standard-embracing furore in an upcoming post – TCM is celebrating nearly nine decades of the Academy Awards. That's the good news. The disappointing news is that if you're expecting to find rare Paramount, Universal, or Fox/20th Century Fox entries in the mix, you're out of luck. So, missing from the TCM schedule are, among others: Best Actress nominees Ruth Chatterton in Sarah and Son, Nancy Carroll in The Devil's Holiday, Claudette Colbert in Private Worlds. Unofficial Best Actor...

Here's confirmation about an urgent and horrifying news story: Kanye West appears in "Anchorman 2." Set photos of West filming a scene in "Anchorman: The Legend Continues" arrived online on Friday.
West's role in the film, which was spoiled earlier this week, is of the cameo variety. The rap superstar appears during a brawl among rival news teams -- a scene that, in description, sounds similar to the news brawl in the first "Anchorman" film.
West, wearing a wig that looks leftover from Robert Downey Jr.'s "Tropic Thunder" dressing room, is shown brandishing a hockey stick as a weapon.
"Anchorman: The Legend Continues" is out in theaters on Dec. 20, meaning director Adam McKay and his production team have just about seven months to get the film finished and released. Other major stars with cameos in "Anchorman 2" include Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Sacha Baron Cohen and Nicole Kidman. McKay has...

The Dark Knight was not the first great Batman movie.
Neither was Batman Begins – in fact, years before Warner Bros. brought Christopher Nolan in to revive their marquee franchise, another group of talented film-makers delivered what is still, to many, the definitive on-screen version of the character.
And if you’re a fan of the character and haven’t seen Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, you should be ashamed of yourself.
Right now seems an ideal time to bring this topic up, as Batman: The Animated Series just celebrated its 20th anniversary (completely unmarked – for Shame Warner Bros.) on the 5th of this month. And this show deserves serious recognition. Desperate for a quick kid-targeted cartoon to support their Batman brand in-between movies, WB landed on animation vets Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski to run the new show, and gave them a surprising amount of creative freedom to go with an enviable budget.

In an ideal world, Australian actor Heath Ledger would have been celebrating his thirty-third birthday today. Heartbreakingly, he isn't here for it: the actor passed away from an accidental prescription drugs overdose just over four years ago, on January 22, 2008. At the time, the actor was shooting Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," and the director managed to finish the film with Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law paying tribute to the late actor by joining the production.
Ledger had a rare talent that seemingly wowed everyone he would work with -- Matt Damon, who appeared with the actor in Gilliam's "The Brothers Grimm," recently called him "the best actor I ever worked with" -- and it's hard not to be distraught at the thought of the performances we'll never get to see. But even so, Ledger left behind an enormously impressive body of work for one so young,...

The producers of this Sunday's Academy Awards telecast have been vocal about their intentions to change some things about the show. But apart from hiring a non-comedian, Hugh Jackman, as the host, they've been silent on what those changes might be -- until now! Cinematical has obtained an exclusive look at some of the surprises in store for Oscar viewers this weekend, and we're pleased to share a few of them with you here.
Just for laughs, the "In Memoriam" montage will feature several people who are still alive. The audience seat-fillers were all recruited from Burbank's homeless population. If Heath Ledger wins the Oscar for his role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight," it will be accepted by Cesar Romero. You know how the president of the Academy always comes out and gives a long, boring speech about goodness-knows-what, and you take that opportunity to go to the bathroom?...
