One of my favorite NYC-based singer/songwriters is up to more master strokes with the release of this thoughtful and moody ballad.-- "Start A War" -- from her six song Ep Strays in the Cut (Noble Steed Music). I could not help but think of the Wilson sisters from Heart as being some sort of sideways inspiration. Well played, Ms. Anna Rose, well played.

One day I will figure out to keep up with the cinematic madness but April contained none of those days. A week ago the Nashville Film Festival wrapped and I have yet to share with you the prizes my jury bestowed! Not that you've been clamoring to read about films you've never heard of but one of the joys of film festivals is in the discoveries. Hence my great thrill to be asked to sit on the "New Directors Jury". Let's survey a handful of the competitors starting with the two winners, both of which made one step closer to theaters this week.
Honorable Mention The Fits (2016)
I'm starting with this one because it's out very soon (June 3rd in NYC / June 10th in Los Angeles) and you absolutely shouldn't miss it. I'm already eager to see it again. We need directors with fresh voices and a unique gaze and...

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

We might look back to 2015’s 10 film line-up as a true vintage year for the Next section. With the likes of Rick Alverson’s Entertainment, Sebastián Silva’s Nasty Baby, Matt Sobel’s Take Me to the River, Sean Baker’s Tangerine and section winner Josh Mond’s James White, we’d be hard pressed to say that this year’s 10 selected film selection is a better crop, but so far with names such as Tim Sutton and his super secretive third film (Dark Night – see pic above), video helmer we adore in Nicolas Pesce’s debut (The Eyes of My Mother), short film Yearbook fest winner Bernardo Britto’s first (Jacqueline Argentine), big Slamdance home run hitter with The Dirties’ Matt Johnson (Operation Avalanche) and the Venice to Park City bound The Fits from Anna Rose Holmer are all films we eagerly await. Here is the 10 section of what the fest calls “pure,...

It would be a futile exercise to try to pigeonhole this filmmaker into one category and just looking at the work samples that have crossed into Sundance territory he has
2007’s short Bomb, brought an unproduced screenplay The Western Habit at the 2011 January Screenwriters Lab and was the editor on the 2013’s kink. However, Ian Olds is better known for his docu features contributions in Occupation: Dreamland (winner of a 2006 Independent Spirit Award) and Fixer: The Taking of Ajmal Naqshbandi. He has two different films on the burner with the Sffs backed (2011 Sffs / Hearst Screenwriting Grant Recipient and Fall 2013, Spring 2014 & Spring 2015 Sffs / Krf Filmmaking Grant Recipient) The Fixer (the feature film version) that might break in early 2016. Starring James Franco, Rachel Brosnahan, Melissa Leo and Dominic Rains, they were still making casting announcements in early August, but we’re feeling that this might have crossed the finish line in time.

Venice Film Festival Biennale College – Cinema sidebar is like a low-lying fruit tree that hasn’t yet been picked, and from the past two editions Sundance programmers have basketed Tim Sutton’s Memphis (2014) and Rania Attieh & Daniel Garcia’s H. (2015). We’re thinking the fest might go three for three with The Fits. Anna Rose Homer fiction feature debut hasn’t yet be shown outside the Lido and it’s coming into 2016 with terrific critical buzz with THR calling it a “rough-diamond discovery” French institute Cahiers du cinéma giving the film major props. The filmmaker touched several facets of the film indie film biz over the years getting her feet wet as a camera assistant, with grip credits for Afterschool and Tiny Furniture and her most recent gigs were as a producer on Jody Lee Lipes’ Ballet 422 and still photographer on Matt Wolf’s Teenage. The Fits, which benefited...

Supported by the same folks who brought us Mona Fastvold’s The Sleepwalker (Sundance 2014) and accompanied by the Borderline Films crew (who need no introduction on this site but what is worth the mention is how extremely productive they are beyond their own back-to-back features (James White and Christine) first-time filmmaker Nicolas Pesce is well versed in the art of eye candy (this year’s clip for Tei Shi’s Bassically is addictive). The under the radar project saw principal photography come to a close this October. Starring Kika Malgahaes, Will Brill, Clara Wong, Flora Diaz, and Olivia Bond, The Eyes of My Mother sounds indie spirit from someone who appears to have a skillset and more importantly, already have a distinct eye.

Chicago – For theater that is audaciously in-the-now and generates a sparkle of life, there are few better storefront (garage, gothic gathering place) groups than “Nothing Without a Company.” Their latest, eclectic kick-in-the-head production is the intensely diverting and weirdly fun “Punk Punk.”
Play Rating: 4.0/5.0
Coming off the mind bending triumph of their recent “Down the Moonlit Path,” Nothing Without a Company takes on the emotions of forming a band, in this case a punk girl group twosome who have personality issues. Throw in a obsessive Chicago landlord and a freedom derived from not giving a damn, and “Punk Punk” rocks the house with arena show passion and real laughs. It’s impossible to take your eyes off this show, and it never lets up in its anarchistic glee and garage band fervor.

Chicago – The world of creation, and the imagination behind it, gets an honorable and elegantly performed treatment in the fascinating “Saving Mr. Banks.” What seems like a “making of” film about the legendary “Mary Poppins,” becomes much more rich in symbolism and consideration.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The story of the meeting between “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers and Walt Disney – played with precise grandfatherly charm by Tom Hanks – is really a tale of how individuals have to overcome their circumstances, yet are haunted by them still. In Travers case, it is a harsh childhood on the vast plains of Australia, and in Disney’s formative years it is the scratch-for-survival lower middle class at the dawn of the 20th Century Midwest. Both situations informed their creative souls, tempered by the realities of their own ambitions and the ambitions of the world that absorbed their creativity. The film celebrates it all in a based-on-truth fantasy about denial,...

A couple months ago, CultureCatch posted a One-Take acoustic performance by Anna Rose. It's good in its own intimate way, but it doesn't come close to suggesting the power she wields when playing with her band -- power that was on full display at Rockwood last week.
Singing and, for a while at least, playing rhythm guitar, Rose was backed by a tight trio of lead guitarist Tyler McDiarmid, bassist Jamie Bishop, and drummer Jordan Pearlson. The general mood of the evening was set on the first song, an ominous, droney tune with a minor-chord progression over which McDiarmid played a bright arpeggio figure and Rose's low-register, bluesy, vibrant vocals cut through. After a bridge that expanded the chord palette, McDiarmid unleashed a wah-wah solo, but everything was concise. The next song was the one in that One-Take, "Show Me Your Hands," but here built on a gritty blues-rock riff.

It's inevitable that I miss out on some terrific music and culture every year. The sheer volume of releases seems to increase every year, and the lack of time to listen to everything, the recommendations of fellow critics and friends, well, there's just so many hours in a day. Here then are some things that I finally got around to ingesting in the last few weeks. Even caught a few live shows in between all of the mounting work. And if that wasn't enough, a killer new tune from His Purple Badass - Prince!
Syd Arthur On An On (Dawn Chorus)
Prog is back! This young U.K.-based quartet -- guitar, violin, bass, drums -- borrows more from Gentle Giant than from the sound of its hometown of Canterbury, i.e., bands such as Caravan, Soft Machine, Egg, or Gong. I've not enjoyed a progressive rock record this much...
