The Venice Film Festival’s Virtual Reality section is going entirely online this year, but expanding its scope via a platform and also a satellite network that will make it accessible worldwide.
In normal times the competitive sidebar launched in 2017 by co-curators Michel Reilhac and Liz Rosenthal – who put Venice ahead of the curve in the VR arena – was held on the Lazzaretto, a tiny island a stone’s throw from the Lido that was a leper colony in the 15th century. But due to the coronavirus pandemic this year it’s been rebranded Venice VR Expanded and moved to a digital platform supported by Htc Viveport, Facebook’s Oculus, VRChat and VRrOOm that will allow various types of access using a VR headset and a PC.
Venice VR Expanded will present a total of 44 projects from 24 countries, 31 of which are in competition. These include “Gnomes & Goblins,” co-directed by “The Lion King...

Now in its third year, the virtual reality section of Venice is making serious forays into documentary territory.
The 76th Venice film festival has included sci-fi thrills and comic-book action, backstage melodrama and medieval court intrigue. During the event’s most escapist moments, anyone longing for a dose of reality would have had more luck finding it in the virtual world.
Venice Vr is a pioneering festival sidebar dedicated to showcasing the best examples of an emergent art form, with a programme of 40 Vr works from around the world. Now in its third year, the section already appears to have turned more mature and serious in its focus. “New art forms usually gravitate towards dystopian fantasy and escapism,” says Liz Rosenthal, Venice Vr’s co-curator. “But we’re now seeing projects that are more interested in human relationships and social issues. It’s all got a lot more sophisticated.”

Prototyping and the art of connecting with audiences early on in a project’s genesis were at the heart of Power to the Pixel’s annual conference on Tuesday (Oct 13).
“We’ll be introducing the idea of the three Ps of prototyping, participation and personalisation,” said Power to the Pixel founder and CEO Liz Rosenthal in her opening remarks.
“We’ll be looking at an audience-centric approach in which you explore the themes and story-world of an idea first, look at the audience behaviour and motivations second and then work out which platform to use to engage. Very often companies do this the other way round.”
The daylong conference – exploring audience engagement, new formats and innovative funding – took place within the framework of the annual Power to the Pixel: The Crossmedia Forum, running Oct 13-16 at the BFI Southbank.

HBO is planning to commission 15-minute web series as one of its plans to keep up with digital native audiences.
Nestor Hernandez, original productions manager of HBO Latin America, discussed the plans at Creative Europe’s fifth-annual European Film Forum on Sunday at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
The web series, which will be primarily screened on HBO Now or HBO Go, will be “big-budget” to differentiate between YouTube-style content.
Hernandez said the audience isn’t necessarily having an influence on what stories HBO tells, but on how and where they tell them.
The Netflix effect is changing all networks, he added. “Big digital companies like Netflix, Apple and Amazon weren’t direct competitors but they could become enemies because they know how to talk the language of people connecting to the digital worlds.
“Netflix is incredible [because of] the audience access it has. Amazon too. They’ve taken the best of what we did and contributed the best...

White paper unveiled at Power to the Pixel sets out six challenges facing funds in the digital age.
Funds need to re-think how they operate if they want to remain relevant in the digital age, according to a white paper unveiled at Power to the Pixel’s Cross-Media Forum.
The study, entitled “Understanding Funders”, is a joint venture between the Canada Media Fund (Cmf), Quebecois cultural agency Sodec and Power to the Pixel.
“The digital technology boom has unbalanced international content production and distribution markets and has also upset our industries’ economics,” said Cmf CEO and president Valerie Creighton, who spearheaded the study alongside Sodec chief Monique Simard and Power to the Pixel CEO Liz Rosenthal.
The paper, she said, grew out of a discussion between Simard and Rosenthal at Mipcom last year over how funds like Sodec and the Cmf, and their counterparts around the world, could stay relevant in “an ever-growing, ever-changing content...

Why does the feature film form have to change? What can society gain from this change? I thought I knew the answers, but what I discovered leading the conversation on ReInvent Hollywood’s episode on “The Form” is something even more inspiring and exciting.
I was 20 when I knew I wanted to use my life and labor to make cinema. I felt cinema could change the world. I felt nothing else had the power to capture our life as it really was—and then move it forward. After 25 years of producing a heck of a lot of cinema – films I am really proud of – I started to doubt that cinema had the capacity that used to , to move us, to excite us, to represent us to the fullest extent.
I was truly excited to gather for the first episode of ReInVent HollyWood what I knew were some of the greatest...

At Rotterdam’s CineMart, industry experts advised filmmakers to start early and make marketing and PR an integral part of any production.
Moderated by Screen International editor Wendy Mitchell, a panel of experts shared tips and strategies on how to cut through the noise for festival and cinema releases and grow new audiences as well.

Screen Film Summit: Understanding the differences between platforms is key to unlocking the potential of a converging world, attendees at Screen’s Film Summit at the BFI Southbank heard today (Dec 2).
A panel on convergence discussed the huge amount of creative potential in the multi-platform arena, but underlined the fact that the appeal of different platforms to audiences had to be fully understood to make projects really work across diverse platforms.
“The promise of convergence is that we can create these storyworlds,” said Film 4.0 commissioning executive Anna Higgs.
Higgs highlighted the strategy taken by Film 4.0 to the multi-platform release of Ben Wheatley’s A Field In England earlier this year which looked to understand the attraction — and differences — of different platforms.
“Thinking about them all as the same pipe to put the same content is dangerous,” she explained.
The problems posed by the range of terms used to describe the arena was also said to be unhelpful...

Interactive project Get Over It wins Pixel Pitch cash prize.
Power to the Pixel has revealed that Get Over It has won the Arte International Prize for the Pixel Pitch.
The project developed by writer, director and producer Paula Schargorodsky and creative producer Rabia Williams, was awarded the $8,200 (€6,000) prize at the 7th Cross-Media Forum (Oct 15-18), run in association with the 57th BFI London Film Festival.
It saw off competition from seven other international projects that were presented before leading figures and experts from cross-media, financing and distribution backgrounds.
Get Over It is described as “a humorous, participative, ceremonial interactive experience and intimate transmedia project,” where participants and collaborating artists share their stories of disappointments in love which will become a collective mechanical installation.
The idea for the interactive website and mechanical installation, originated from the feature documentary Girl Behind the Camera.

As the three-day event marked its seventh edition, the mood was in part reflective as the likes of Xbox chief design engineer Elan Lee, respected transmedia storyteller Lance Weiler and interactive docs guru Ingrid Kopp, shared some of the lessons they had learned working across multiple platforms in recent years.

Panel moderator Liz Rosenthal, of digital media group Power to the Pixel, opened Independent Film Week's "Transmedia is for the People" discussion by lamenting declines in the time and money that audiences have to devote to media, even as the quantity and variety of content and channels grow. Today's viewers, she said, are fragmented across platforms, where they expect to follow the stories they consume and have those stories follow them. Audiences have also evolved from passive absorbers to active collaborators who anticipate personalized experiences from their entertainment. Seeking to bridge the gap between an errant viewership and filmmakers stuck in traditional creative models, Rosenthal turned the conversation over to a three-man panel. The hour-long chat between Adnann Wasey, digital director of of Pov docs; Eric Brown of production company Kornhaber Brown; and Steve Coulson, creative director at Campfire, highlighted a number of key ideas about building...

Eight projects and in the running for the prestigious Arte Pixel Pitch Prize and new prizes have been introduced as cross-media content creation and distribution grow.
Power to the Pixel(PttP) has named the 30 cross-media projects which have been selected to participate in The Pixel Market 2012, its two-day co-production market to be held in London on 17 and 18 October, during the annual Cross-Media Forum held in association with the 56th BFI London Film Festival.
Watch the Power to the Pixel Introduction here:
Of the 30 teams, eight have been selected to compete for the prestigious Arte Pixel Pitch Prize, an award of £6,000 generously sponsored by the French/German broadcaster. The eight projects in the running for this prize will be presented at The Pixel Pitch, to be judged by a panel of international commissioning executives, decision-makers and financiers who face the hard task of choosing an ultimate winner. For participants and the audience of PttP delegates who will also be in attendance, The Pixel Pitch offers a unique opportunity to hear how cross-media projects are financed, and by whom.
Liz Rosenthal, CEO & Founder of Power to the Pixel said: “Making the selection of 30 projects for this year’s market was a hard task for all the right reasons. Creators are increasingly working on the development of their story ideas and content, and as a result this year’s Pixel Market and the whole arena is growing fast. We have selected 30 projects from nearly 100 entrants, well up from 25 last year which is hugely exciting for potential international partners and investors. As a result, this year's Pixel Market is bigger and bolder, with new prizes introduced to help support projects and their creators. We’re delighted to be expanding the opportunities that The Cross-Media Forum brings to the BFI London Film Festival and to the UK creative sector as a whole.”
The eight projects in competition at The Pixel Pitch include The Super 8 Complex, a user-generated interactive archive celebrating 8mm film, by award-winning production company Spring Films, the U.K. production partner of Werner Herzog Films. Jeff Norton, a finalist at last year’s Pixel Pitch, returns with his immersive dystopia Metawars. The Austrian-Iranian filmmaker Arash Riahi also makes a return: his project, Everyday Rebellion, was developed through PttP’s European cross-media workshop The Pixel Lab in 2010.
In addition, all 30 producer-led teams at the Market stand a chance of winning one of three new prizes, backed by international sponsors: the beActive Pixel Market Comedy Prize, the Mozilla Pixel Market Prize for Non-Fiction, and the Cinekid Pixel Market Prize, for projects aimed at children aged between 4 and 14.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 18 October.
The Pixel Market is a unique event, dedicated to financing international cross-media properties. It puts the best cross-media projects from around the world on show in front of more than 100 leading international financiers, commissioners and decision-makers from film, broadcast, games, publishing, advertising, the arts, mobile, tech and interactive media, offering producers one-to-one meetings with these experts that could be decisive in taking their projects forward. It lies at the heart of PttP’s Cross-Media Forum, now in its sixth year, which covers the latest trends in audience behaviour and new business models in the cross-media and transmedia space.
The Pixel Market is supported by the Media Programme of the European Union. Additional support from the BFI, Arts Council England, Creative Skillset's Film Skills Fund, Canada Media Fund, Arte, Creative Industries Ktn, Telefilm Canada, beActive, Cinekid, Mozilla and Tribeca Film Institute.
Costas Daskalakis, Head of Media programme unit at Eacea said: "Cross-media projects have attracted a lot of attention over the last few years. Media is happy to support events such as The Pixel Market so that they also attract funding. The Media programme has developed an overall strategy to support cross-media projects including training, financial support for development, markets and distribution."
Clare Stewart, Festival Director, BFI London Film Festival said: "The Pixel Market is an integral part of the BFI London Film Festival’s Industry programme, providing tangible opportunities for innovative cross-media projects to attract marketplace support.”
Dan Simmons, Head of Film, Creative Skillset said: "The impact of digital and new technology continues to be a funding priority for Creative Skillset under the UK's film skills strategy 'A Bigger Future 2'.
We have funded Power to the Pixel since its inception six years ago. Events such as The Pixel Lab and The Pixel Market are powerful opportunities for cross-media professionals - spanning different sectors of the creative industries - to network with leading digital pioneers; developing new business and transmedia opportunities in an international environment."
Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, Canada Media Fund said: "The Canada Media Fund is pleased to partner once again with Power to the Pixel which brings together a world of creative talents. We recognise the important role of The Pixel Market as a key event where producers share their wealth of knowledge amongst each other. The diversity of voices and projects presented here illustrate the unique opportunities that exist within the world of cross-media.”
Michel Reilhac, Executive Director of Arte France Cinéma said: "There is no better place today then the London Pixel Market to keep myself informed of the best transmedia stories in the making. It is a fast evolving new field and this is where I feel I can stay on top of what is happening creatively.”
Carolle Brabant, Telefilm Canada's Executive Director, said: "We’re excited to support Power to the Pixel for a second year running. At Telefilm, finding innovative ways to engage audiences and to stimulate demand across borders and platforms is at the centre of our priorities. This unique international forum provides trend-setting producers from Canada with an opportunity to showcase their work and to engage with leading decision-makers in this dynamic marketplace."
Jeremy Davenport, Deputy Director Creative Industries Ktn said: "Power to the Pixel is exploring the cutting edge of digital convergence, where creativity, content and technology are forging new ways of storytelling for a global audience. Ciktn is looking forward to seeing the exciting projects that are emerging this year."
Brett Gaylor, Director Mozilla Popcorn said: "We're excited at Mozilla to see how the makers chosen for this year's Pixel Market will transform the web."
Nuno Bernardo, MD beActive said: "We're very impressed with the quality of the projects submitted that make the jury decision very difficult. We are seeing an increase not only in quality but also in the diversity of the projects submitted. This year comedy-based projects are strong contenders, and we are excited about the projects that are eligible for the beActive Pixel Market Comedy Prize."
Fleur Winters, Head Cinekid for Professionals said: "I’m extremely pleased to partner with Power to the Pixel, especially with this great selection of 30 innovative projects. The new frontiers they tap into matches ours and are so important! Producers will hopefully find a perfect follow up of their children’s cross-media projects after the renowned Pixel Market at the Junior Co-production Market, here at Cinekid in Amsterdam.”
Beth Janson, Executive Director Tribeca Film Institute said: "The Pixel Market is an essential destination if you are looking for the best and the brightest independent producers in this quickly evolving space. We are thrilled to be partners with Liz Rosenthal and her team.”

Iron Sky Happy American filmmakers are eagerly discussing and developing thoughts and strategies for Diy and Hybrid Distribution. New examples are always coming up which should mark the way toward a strategy for such distribution, but as a sort of blueprint, no strategic solution is in sight. I love American enthusiasm and entrepreneurship and I know it will result in something the world will adopt, but the current fragmentation of digital distribution is getting to me. Spokespeople like Ted Hope, Peter Broderick, Liz Rosenthal, Thomas Mai and Stacy Parks are serving a constantly renewing generation of young filmmakers but what…...

Would it be presumptuous of me to imagine that I have a contingent of enthusiastic readers who have been worried by my recent absence from the hypertext format? I picture vast swathes of cine-literate blog readers staring distractedly out of their office windows wondering what has become of the eponymous Nicholas Deigman. I am, of course, joking; but as there is technically a minute possibility that this is in fact the case, I begin this post with a heart-felt apology for my recent absence. I have spent the past few weeks researching the great, unchartered frontier of cross-platform, multi-media marketing and distribution. I am currently working for an exciting distribution and exhibition company, Future Shorts Ltd, which organizes monthly short film festivals across the globe, and also organizes the much-hyped Secret Cinema events. In my travels I have come across some fascinating new platforms for film marketing and distribution. But...

London -- New-York based veteran producer Ted Hope will deliver this year's keynote speech for the Power to the Pixel Cross-Media Forum held during the Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival, organizers said Wednesday.
Hope is charged with setting the tone for the event, which is now part of the festival's annual calendar of events. Hope's credits include "21 Grams," "In The Bedroom" and "Happiness."
Hope said: "I sat for too long wondering why cinema wasn't changing and thinking about where we can take the narrative form has sometimes felt like a solitary pursuit."
Another strand of the overall event, the Pixel Pitch, reflects Hope's belief in the need for independents to seize the potential of digital means to finance, create and distribute their work.
The cross-media pitching forum showcases U.K and international cross-media film projects -- stories that span film, TV, online, mobile and gaming.
