The Locarno Film Festival will pay tribute to Italian producer and director Renzo Rossellini by presenting him with a lifetime achievement award, organizers said Thursday.
The award ceremony in the Swiss town’s Piazza Grande on Aug. 10 will be followed by a screening of Federico Fellini’s La città delle donne (City of Women, 1980), on which Rossellini served as a producer. On Aug. 11, Rossellini, whose half-sister is Italian star Isabella Rossellini, will take part in a festival panel conversation.
“As producer for master filmmakers of the caliber of Federico Fellini, Lina Wertmüller, Werner Herzog, and Francis Ford Coppola, but also as assistant director (for his father Roberto and, among others, François Truffaut and Claude Chabrol) and director in his own right, Renzo Rossellini has never ceased his quest to pass on his knowledge of the cinema, teaching generations of students and cineastes with passion and commitment,” the Locarno fest said.

Italian producer, director, and film and TV industry pioneer Renzo Rossellini is being honored with the Locarno Film Festival’s lifetime achievement award.
The Swiss fest dedicated to indie cinema will pay tribute to the consummate filmmaker and renaissance man – who as a producer shepherded works by master directors such as Federico Fellini, Lina Wertmüller, Werner Herzog and Francis Ford Coppola – with a screening of Fellini’s 1980 work “City of Women” on its 8,000 seat open-air Piazza Grande venue on Aug. 10, followed by an onstage conversation the next day.

The film world has lost one of its most controversial figures, as it has been confirmed that Italian screenwriter, director, and actor Ruggero Deodato has passed away at the age of 83. Described by filmmaker Mick Garris as “a sweet man who made brutal cinema”, Deodato was best known for directing the 1980 film Cannibal Holocaust, which got him arrested because the authorities suspected he had really murdered members of his cast. They were all just fine, but Cannibal Holocaust has also sickened and disturbed many viewers with its depiction of multiple real animal killings. Deodato would later say he regretted including the deaths of those animals, saying it was “stupid” to put those moments in the movie.
Deodato was born on May 7, 1939, and got involved with filmmaking at the end of his teens because the area in Rome where he lived also happened to be the neighborhood where the major film studios were located.

Every family has patterns of behaviour and tropes that obsess them. Though not every family has a patriarch genius who put those in place more or less in the public eye. Alessandro Rossellini is the grandson of Roberto Rossellini. The Rossellinis Alessandro visits and captures on camera are his aunts, Isabella Rossellini and her twin sister Ingrid Rossellini, his father Renzo Rossellini, his uncle Robin Rossellini, aunt Nur Rossellini and his mother Katherine Cohen.
He opens with Roberto Rossellini’s funeral on June 6, 1977, where we get a glimpse of the protagonists of this documentary. The voiceover by the grandson helps to keep track of the groundbreaking, cinema changing director’s wives and seven children, with “the illegitimate ones unknown.” This is a danger zone, and more than once does Alessandro venture into swamps where no one wants to tread.

Tel Aviv-based sales agent Cinephil has taken international sales rights to high-concept doc “The Rossellinis,” which will provide a tongue-in-cheek autobiographical look at the descendants living around the world of iconic Italian director Roberto Rossellini’s extended family and is being directed by his grandson, Alessandro Rossellini.
“The Rossellinis,” which is being pitched at Rome’s Mia market, takes its cue from the uneasy legacy that the master auteur, who first galvanized global film buffs with “Rome Open City,” left on the progeny spawned by three wives — who include Ingrid Bergman of course — during the course of a glorious, albeit uneven, cinematic career that followed. Besides Ingrid Bergman, the other two women with whom Rossellini had kids were Italian production designer Marcella De Marchis and Indian screenwriter Sonali Das Gupta.
The extended Rossellini family includes Italians, Swedes, Afro-Americans, Indians, atheists, Catholics and Muslims.

That naughty boy Federico Fellini goes all out with this essay-hallucination about women, a surreal odyssey that hurls Marcello Mastroianni into a world in which women are no longer putting up with male nonsense.
