One of the biggest puzzle pieces of the spring television season recently fit into place with the announcement that the HBO limited series “White House Plumbers” will debut on Monday, May 1. Exclusive: Wiip has optioned The Memo, the forthcoming novel by former Wall Street Journal reporters Rachel Dodes and Lauren Mechling.
The independent studio will develop the book for TV with Lean Machine, the production company headed by screenwriter and director Aline Brosh McKenna.
The novel follows a 30-something woman whose mounting suspicion that she never “got the memo” is confirmed, and she’s given the chance to travel back in time and fix her worst mistakes—but at what cost? The Memo will be published by Harper Perennial in 2024.
Wiip’s Paul Lee and Mark Roybal will executive produce alongside Brosh McKenna, Heather Morris, Dodes, and Mechling.
“We loved Rachel and Lauren’s mind-bending, romantic, and immensely relatable novel about what it means to live up to your potential,” said Brosh McKenna. “Jenny’s story leaps across timelines and explores every what if, but ultimately celebrates the imperfect moments and friendships that make life worthwhile.

When “Mare of Easttown” made its debut in April on HBO, few likely expected the show would prove to be one of the year’s most acclaimed and Emmy-nominated series. But buoyed by strong word-of-mouth and its weekly rollout, “Mare” ended its run with a finale that satisfied fans and Emmy voters alike. The show received 16 nominations for HBO, including Best Limited Series, Best Actress in a Limited Series for Kate Winslet, Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for Evan Peters, and Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for Julianne Nicholson and Jean Smart. Winslet and Peters, meanwhile, are the odds-on favorites to win in their respective categories.
But it almost didn’t happen according to that script. In a new interview at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Amazon Prime Video boss Jen Salke said she had hoped to land “Mare of Easttown” for the streaming platform but lost out to HBO.

Exclusive: Filming on HBO’s The White House Plumbers resumed August 12, sources tell Deadline.
Production on the five-part Watergate limited series, starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux, was suspended August 5 following an on-set incident involving series director/executive producer David Mandel and a member of the prop department that triggered an investigation. The probe has concluded.
Mandel’s outburst, which is believed to have led to the prop department walking off the set in protest, was captured on audio recording, which Deadline has reviewed. In it, Mandel is heard using the F-word and threatening the prop master that he will never work again.
Mandel and The White House Plumbers‘ prop staff, including the prop master involved in the verbal altercation, are all back at work and remain on the show, sources said. As a result of the investigation, HBO has put additional protocols in place for the remainder of the shoot,...

The success of HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” couldn’t have come at a better time for Wiip, the boutique production company behind Kate Winslet’s limited series. The murder mystery was nominated for 16 Emmys this year, earning raves for its unique storytelling and performances — and also for its twisty, satisfying ending.
“Mare” has become a nice calling card for Wiip, which former ABC Entertainment chief Paul Lee launched with the backing of CAA in 2018. “It is a landmark moment,” Lee says. “The genre is something that’s been done for a long time but never with that level of sophistication and with an ending that surprised and then surprised and then surprised again.”

They were rewarded for their effort with record ratings and a whopping 16 Emmy nominations, including Best Limited Series. Roybal recalls that they watched the nominations announcement together and “we were so thrilled for the cast but also for everyone else involved, all the artisans below-the-line.”
The executive producer credits the writer for crafting a story that was so compelling. “I devoured his pilot script. I called him the next morning to say I wanted to be part of this. I fell in love with Mare Sheehan. My heart broke for her and I just wanted to know that she was going to be okay.”

Exclusive Updated with more information: Filming on HBO’s five-part Watergate limited series The White House Plumbers, starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux, has been suspended over an on-set incident this week that have triggered an investigation.
“HBO has received reports of alleged unprofessional behavior on the set of White House Plumbers,” the network said in a statement to Deadline. “We take very seriously our responsibility to ensure a respectful work environment on all our productions, and we are investigating the matter fully.”
The network is not commenting further. According to sources, there was an on-set altercation on Wednesday, Aug. 4, involving series director/executive producer David Mandel and a member of the prop department, which led to the prop department walking off the set in protest. I hear the production halt (with no reason provided) was revealed in a call sheet sent out Thursday night. The document included a note...

Have you seen The Empty Man? For a while there, Fox was probably hoping you would. Probably when it acquired the rights to the graphic novel from Boom! Studios. Probably when it gambled millions of dollars on David Prior’s big-screen horror debut. Probably before it knew that The Empty Man would be the last film to accidentally feature the original 20th Century Fox logo. Probably way before some very particular world events affected the global theatrical release schedule as we knew it.
Probably before all of that.
Have you seen The Empty Man? Prior and the former executive vice president of production at Fox, Mark Roybal, really wanted you to. The pair knew they were embarking on delivering a unique and ambitious horror movie, and Roybal was its studio champion – instrumental to getting that important initial greenlight. But during the final week of production when filming had to be halted due to bad weather,...

Casey Bloys, chief content officer at HBO and HBO Max, said he basically doesn’t know whether Mare of Easttown will be back.
“People tend to think that those decisions are like ABC in the 70s – ‘We we need more Mare, we need more Mare!’ the exec told a press gathering in New York City today of the acclaimed limited series.
“It’s a decision with Brad [Ingelsby] and with Kate [Winslet]. I would rely on them coming to us, saying, ‘We think there’s more, here is what it is,” he said, “It’s not a foregone conclusion that just because something does well” it gets another season.
“It starts with the creative team. I am never the one driving it.”
The series that wrapped May 30 was watched by 4 million across HBO as and HBO Max, setting several records for the pay-cabler and its streaming service. With Kate Winslet as troubled,...
