During a recent Gold Derby video interview, contributing editor Tony Ruiz spoke in-depth with Lainey Wilson (“Yellowstone”) about Season 5 of her Paramount Network western drama, which is eligible at the 2023 Emmys. Watch the full video above and read the complete interview transcript below.
Wilson is a country music singer-songwriter who was named Female Vocalist of the Year by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. In addition, her album “Bell Bottom Country” was the ACM’s Album of the Year. It’s no surprise, then, that she co-wrote the song “Smell Like Smoke” for the number-one show on television, “Yellowstone,” in addition to recurring in the role of Abby.
Acting was “not a priority” for her by any means, Wilson told us in our webchat. That said, she added, “If an opportunity came up where that meant I got to share my music with the world,...

“In the Best Limited Series category, we will have six contenders and I think there’s probably three locks,” declares Rob Licuria, who singles out likely frontrunners Hulu’s “Dopesick,” Netflix’s “Maid” and HBO’s “The White Lotus.”
He’s joined by fellow Gold Derby senior editor Matt Noble and contributors Charles Bright and Tony Ruiz to debate the most likely series and performers that we can expect to be nominated in this year’s Limited Series and TV Movie races at the Emmys. Voters had until June 27 to cast their ballots, which are now being furiously tallied to determine the nominees that the TV academy will announce next week on July 12. “When asked the question ‘what is the best thing in pop culture these days?’ the answer inevitably has to be the drama series that are on TV, streaming and cable at the moment,” declares Rob Licuria about the unprecedented number of prestige dramas in contention this year. “I’ve never seen anything quite like the amount of amazing content that we’re talking about today. I think that we probably have four locks,” he proclaims about Best Drama Series frontrunners HBO’s “Succession,” Netflix’s “Ozark” and “Squid Game” and Apple TV Plus’ “Severance,” adding for our recent webchat that he thinks HBO’s “Euphoria,” Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone,” the #1 show on TV, will round out the top race.

The Television Academy recently announced that the 2022 Emmys will take place on September 12. The ceremony is airing on NBC this year, continuing the tradition of switching regularly between the Big Four networks. A master of ceremonies has yet to be named, so now’s the time to guess who might be tapped to host by Emmy producers — and to throw out some suggestions that may not be on their radar. Remember, NBC/Universal will most definitely choose someone from their own family, so that means folks like Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and James Corden will not be options. Who should host the 2022 Emmys? Vote in our poll below.
The last time NBC aired the broadcast was in 2018, when the “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update duo of Michael Che and Colin Jost served as co-hosts. The guys received mixed reviews, with our own Tony Ruiz calling their monologue “charming, but safe.

To say that 2021 has been a weird year is quite an understatement. Things started off really bleak then seemed to be getting better only to culminate in the uncertainty we now feel about everything. But we still got awards ceremonies and plenty of great moments from them. Due to pandemic precautions, all the ceremonies had to find ways to adapt so that they could still be events full of stars but also emphasizing the safety of those in attendance. Some of those presentations, like this year’s Grammy Awards, actually made this list which was selected by 15 of the site’s editors and contributors.

Not only have marquee categories like Best Director been discussed ad nauseum, but they have also become foregone conclusions in this historically long Oscar season. Emmy predictions slugfest: Comedy Series lineup could be completely different than last year [Watch]
The comedy field is devoid of the usual suspects at the Emmy Awards this year. Only “The Kominsky Method” of last year’s eight nominees for Best Comedy Series is eligible to repeat its nomination, with the pandemic delaying other academy favorites. Those that are expected to return to contention next year for the 2022 races after extended hiatuses include “Atlanta,” “Barry,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Dead to Me,” “The Great,” “Insecure,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Master of None,” “Ramy,” “Russian Doll” and “What We Do in the Shadows.”
Of that list, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” has ever won the top prize, as the other recipients in the last decade — “Fleabag,” “Modern Family,” “Schitt’s Creek” and “Veep” — have all ended. For we awards-obsessed writers and editors at Gold Derby, the Golden Globe Awards are the official launch of a season full of trophies. Ordinarily, we celebrate by gleefully (and sometimes snarkily) watching celebrities drink and mingle while fancy statues are handed out to the best in film and television by about 90 foreign journalists who make up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This year the Globes were handed out in a socially distanced virtual and bi-coastal ceremony hosted by comedy queens Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
Even with the Covid-safe restrictions, the Globes still offered up lots of surprises and unforgettable moments. “I like that it’s different from the Globes,” says contributor Denton Davidson about the nominees for the top film prize at the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Just hours after the nominations were revealed, Denton, Rob Licuria, Tony Ruiz, Charlie Bright and I met to chat about the most exciting choices and head-scratching omissions, beginning with our love for the citations for ensembles like “Da 5 Bloods,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “One Night in Miami,” and “Minari,” none of which made the list at the Golden Globes just the day before. Watch the video slugfest above.
Elsewhere in our praise, Tony celebrates Vanessa Kirby‘s nomination for “Pieces of a Woman” while Denton applauds Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”). On the other end of the emotional scale, Charlie cheers the bid for Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”).

Nominations for the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced on Thursday, February 4 with Netflix leading the charge, racking up a whopping 17 bids in the various TV categories. Gold Derby contributors Charles Bright, David Buchanan, Denton Davidson, Rob Licuria and Tony Ruiz waste no time hashing out their feelings about the most exciting nominations and egregious snubs on the day. Watch our slugfest for the TV SAG Award nominations above.
“‘The Crown’ Season 4, for me, was the best season so far,” Licuria gushes while discussing their five SAG nominations. “I’ve watched the whole season twice. Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman, Emma Corrin, Josh O’Connor. The only one that missed out was Tobias Menzies, really, and Helena Bonham Carter.”
“The Crown” led the field of Netflix nominees with “Ozark” right behind with four nominations. “Dead to Me” earned three bids on the comedy side while “Bridgerton” and “The Queen’s Gambit” reaped two nominations each.
