Yesterday on the blog we announced the Fellows participating in the 2024 Film Independent Episodic Lab. Today, we’re drawing your attention to the fact that applications for next year’s cohort are currently open, with the regular deadline of February 26.

The writers behind ABC’s Black-ish, Apple TV+’s Pachinko, Disney’s Oscar-winning Encanto and Adam McKay’s satire Don’t Look Up are among the winners of the 46th annual Humanitas Prizes. The honors were bestowed Friday afternoon in a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton.
Humanitas Prizes have been handed out since 1973 to empower television and film writers whose work explores the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way. Writers across 10 categories receive 10,000 cash prizes.
Other winners included Nanfu Wang for her documentary In the Same Breath, Matt Harris for writing the script for Ted Melfi’s The Starling starring Melissa McCarthy and Kevin Kline, and Marissa Jo Cerar for penning the “Mother and Son” episode of ABC’s anthology series Women of the Movement.
Also during the ceremony emceed by Larry Wilmore, the Humanitas organization presented Filmmakers for Ukraine with the Kieser Award and Starz president and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch...

Participants have been selected for this year's IFP/Los Angeles Screenwriters Lab. The writers and their projects are Scott Coffey and Blair Mastbaum for Jupiter, Andrew Friedman for miss you beast, Laura Hubber for Talk About a Revolution, Kendra Kurosawa for The Hunter, Jeremy Lerman for Central, Katherine Ruppe for A Killing Frost, Beth Schacter for Normal Adolescent Behavior, L. Malaine Waldron for South of Heaven, Garret Williams for Lost Dog and Christopher Young for The Pacific. IFP/LA's scribes lab, which runs for seven weeks with Jeff Stockwell as instructor, is a program designed to help indie screenwriters improve their writing.

David Koepp has been honored with the Distinguished Achievement in Screenwriting Award by the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television at the UCLA Screenwriters Showcase, held this week at the WGA West Theater in Beverly Hills. The event was part of UCLA Festival 2004: New Student Work in Theater, Film and Television, which runs through Friday. Gore Verbinski received the UCLA Filmmaker of the Year Award at a Tuesday ceremony hosted by Robert Rosen, dean of the school, at the DGA Theatre in Los Angeles. On Wednesday, Catherine Hardwicke was honored by UCLA Film, Television and Digital Media Department chair Barbara Boyle at the DGA Theatre. Monday night's showcase honoring Koepp, which was hosted by Mike Werb, also featured staged readings from five winners of the annual graduate student screenwriting competition. They were Mike Armbruster, Tammy Duffy, Greg Kennerson, Katherine Ruppe and Julie Ann Sipos.
