Few actors seemed to have quite as firm a grasp on John Hughes' approach to comedy as John Candy. The treasured Canadian funnyman could handle slapstick and sentiment with equal grace, which was the key to so many of Hughes' movies as a writer, director, and producer. It's this skill that allowed Candy to go from busting guts to breaking hearts in a film like 1987's "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," or even mix pathos with morbid humor during the brief scenes he shares with Catherine O'Hara in 1990's "Home Alone."

The beloved John Candy film Uncle Buck marked its 28th anniversary Wednesday, and Josh Brolin acknowledged the occasion by sharing a fan-made poster featuring his Marvel supervillain, Thanos.
The reimagined Uncle Thanos poster shows Thanos in the role of Buck Russell and some of the Avengers, along with the villain's adopted daughters Gamora and Nebula.
The poster was created by an artist and designer who goes by Mutant 101 on Instagram. The artist wrote that he made the design to celebrate the 1989 movie in addition to his excitement for the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War.

Watch This offers movie recommendations inspired by new releases or premieres. Since it’s Chicago Week here at The A.V. Club, we’re looking back on some essential Chicago movies, set (and often filmed) in the Windy City.
Uncle Buck (1989)
The greater Chicago area had few cinematic boosters more tireless than John Hughes. The city was the setting for nearly every youth-centric story he told, from the detention hall of The Breakfast Club to the suburban streets of Home Alone. But while the films often prominently feature Chicago landmarks or residences, Uncle Buck feels different. Not just because it’s the only film Hughes directed besides Planes, Trains, And Automobiles (which also starred his frequent collaborator John Candy) to follow a grown-up rather than kids—but because Candy’s character, Buck Russell, is the closest thing imaginable to a sentient embodiment of the Chicago the filmmaker loved.

Back in 1990, CBS tried to make a TV show spin-off of the popular Uncle Buck movie. It was cancelled after one season. Now, ABC is trying their own. Will it be a success in the ratings? Cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
On Uncle Buck, Buck Russell (Mike Epps) is a fun-loving but irresponsible guy who needs a job and a place to stay. By happy coincidence, his brother Will (James Lesure) and sister-in-law Alexis (Nia Long) need his help. Their nanny has just quit and they need someone to take care of their children, Tia (Iman Benson), Miles (Sayeed Shahidi), and Maizy (Aalyrah Caldwell).
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new...

Our imaginations are the most important thing we have. It’s what keeps us growing as individuals and as a species—the source of our wonder, ingenuity, and innovation. At least in theory. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that and feel jaded, to overlook the possibilities that existence holds.
To make matters more difficult, there are individuals out there who, for a variety of reasons, deliberately suppress imagination, whether by blatantly stamping it out or just ignoring it if doesn’t match their worldviews.
Movies are a good reminder for all of us. They can work on a level of just popping one in to rejuvenate after a bad day, or can stir a debate around the world. Movies can certainly be inspiring as a whole, but there are films specifically about what our imaginations can do, not necessarily just from a visual standpoint, but thematically, inspiring us to...
