Bryan Singer has had a ruinous week. On December 4, 20th Century Fox fired Singer from the Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” for abandoning the London set; on December 6, the studio announced Dexter Fletcher as his replacement. In a statement, Singer ascribed his absence on “Bohemian Rhapsody” to caring for an ailing parent, but Fox also declined to renew its long-term deal with Singer’s production company, while his longtime publicist cut ties a few months ago.

And then, on December 7, Singer hit the news cycle again: In a lawsuit filed by attorney Jeff Herman, Cesar Sanchez-Guzman accused Singer of sexually assaulting him in 2003, when Sanchez-Guzman was 17.
All of this represents a tremendous comedown for Singer, a blockbuster director whose films have made over $1 billion in domestic release alone.

Justin Kurzel’s upcoming feature Snowtown has been featured in Seven’s Sunrise as “Cinema controversy: The film accused of glamorising crime”.
Producer Anna McLeish and Queensland University of Technology senior research associate Dr Mark Ryan explained that Snowtown is not a horror film and instead, it is an exploration of the social/psychological circumstances that the 1990s South Australian murders originated from.
The project attracted media attention when it was first announced last year, but reports were mostly positive after the film’s premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival. However, it seems inevitable that the mainstream media will continue to use the controversy angle when discussing Snowtown. Whether this will have a positive or negative impact on the film’s performance remains to be seen.
Snowtown will be released on May 19.

Having grown up in the world of digital media, the emerging generation of filmmakers and artists understand content differently and are breaking down the traditional boundaries of how films are made, distributed and consumed. This view point has been backed by Dr Mark Ryan, a researcher with the Arc Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (Cci) at the Queensland University of Technology. Ryan says we're no longer restricted to traditional screen content like feature films or TV series. Furthermore, aspiring filmmakers don't require sky-high budgets and distributors are no longer the sole gatekeepers to the film industry.

I’m just not sure the horror genre needs another "hip" comedy that calls out all the clichés and contrivances. It’s not every day you get a film like Leslie Vernon that actually understands the genre well enough to send it up with a straight face. The jury’s still out on the upcoming Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, but we’ve got a bit of casting news to report on while we wait and see how this horror comedy measures up.
The film will star Alan Tudyk (Serenity) and Tyler Labine (TV’s "Reaper") as a redneck duo mistaken for a pair of psychotic killers by a group of hapless teens partying on the lake where our titular characters have inherited a dilapidated cabin. Wackiness and mayhem ensue.
