The Fantasia International Film Festival will celebrate its upcoming 28th edition with an electrifying program of screenings, workshops, and launch events running from July 18 through August 4, 2024, returning yet again at the Concordia Hall and J.A. de Sève cinemas, with additional screens and events at Montreal's Cinémathèque québécoise and Cinéma du Musée.
The festival's full lineup will be announced on July 3, but in the meantime, Fantasia has unveiled a select first wave of premiere titles, along with a first look at its 2024 poster art created by Montreal visual artist Donald Caron.

The sudden death of his beloved Sayuri (Akari Sato) shocks pizza delivery guy Kengo Tojo (Kohei Nagano) to the core. Yet, despite this tragic event, life goes on. Not much later, while delivering pizza, he encounters Umika Akaboshi (Nagisa Kihara), a strange high school student. After expressing some interest in the strange posters hanging on the house, Umika suddenly pulls him into the house to introduce him to her father (Makoto Tezuka), who is a shaman. He offers Kengo a taste of his abilities, yet before this show can convince Kengo, he runs away. At night, after arriving home, he finds a spectral Sayuri sitting on his bed.

This summer, a new horror film will be shaking things up in theaters. Koji Shiraishi, the director of the 2016 film Sadako vs. Kayako , will be helming a live-action movie adaptation of Rensuke Oshikiri's manga series Sayuri . Oshikiri, known for his manga series Hi Score Girl , penned Sayuri from 2010-2011 in Gentosha Comics' Comic Birz magazine. The horror series, which was published in two volumes, follows the strange phenomena haunting a family after moving into their dream home. Related: Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction Anime Film Announces New Voice Cast Members Oshikiri says Sayuri will be a must-see for horror viewers who are tired of protagonists fighting losing battles against the paranormal. Shiraishi also expressed his excitement about the project, adding that he believes it will "shake up the stagnant J-horror genre." Sayuri is scheduled to premiere in Japanese cinemas in Summer 2024. Since 2001, Cannes Film Festival has gone to the dogs — literally, as the annual Palm Dog awards ceremony has celebrated the best canine performers in cinema for the past 22 years! The actress said, “I share a very friendly relationship with my mother, we are more like best friends to each other. We share things with each other, we fight but eventually come back to each other. I believe there’s no particular day to celebrate our mothers and it goes for everyone and I feel I’m always going to be a child for my mother.

Yusuke Morii graduated from the Department of Film, now Nihon Institute of Cinema, and entered the industry as part of the production department of Shunichi Nagasaki’s The Witch of the West is Dead (2008). The screenwriter and filmmaker has also worked as an assistant director to Tatsushi Omori on the film Every Day a Good Day (2018). His directorial debut, Amiko (2022), is based on the novel Kochira Amiko by Natsuko Imamura and is selected for IFFR 2023.
