First, apologies if this violates Den of Geek’s house style guidelines, but Lol. Lol at everyone who thought that Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as the avenging angel of ‘The Fans’, riding in and heroically retconning out all the plot points they had been complaining about for the last four years.
Davies has announced he has no plans to retcon Chris Chibnall’s controversial, canon-shaking Timeless Child plot twist, which revealed that the Doctor is no child of Gallifrey, but a foundling discovered at the mouth of a dimensional rift from universes unknown. Neither is he going to let that twist simply sit in the Doctor’s backstory, present but unacknowledged, alongside other inconvenient facts like the Moon being an egg, Earth’s forests spontaneously multiplying to help burn off solar flares, and the Doctor being best mates with Winston Churchill.
No, instead Davies has said...

Ah the early 2000s. The Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube were the hottest videogame consoles around. Limp Bizkit, Smash Mouth, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, and Usher were ruling the airwaves and little did we know we would be blessed with tons of horror video game movie adaptations as well. Granted, some weren’t that great, looking at you House of the Dead, Doom and Alone in the Dark. But there also were some fun films from this genre…Silent Hill and Resident Evil. At the time, both weren’t exactly loved by critics, but they did have their fans and have each spawned sequels. Today, we’re looking at the first Resident Evil (watch it Here) on this episode of Horror Revisited.
Let’s start back in January 1997. Resident Evil had already released on the Playstation One to critical fame as well as being adored by gamers. A German Production...

Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, died in 1961. But questions surrounding his tragic passing in a plane crash, and his sexuality, refuse to die down.
“We know who he is, but we don’t know that much about him,” says director Per Fly, now bringing “Hammarskjöld – Fight for Peace” to the International Film Festival Rotterdam. His journals “Markings,” published posthumously, provided a way in.
“There he was, this powerful man, and yet his writings deal with loneliness and sacrifice. There was a fragile poet inside of a politician.”
With Beta Cinema on board, the film was produced by Patrick Ryborn for Unlimited Stories. Variety premieres the trailer here.
According to Fly, Hammarskjöld was also a man who couldn’t afford to love.
“Dag said: ‘I am not a homosexual.’ Of course he did – otherwise, he would go to jail. One time,...

Getting caught up in a deadly kidnapping, being torn away from your loved ones and forced into witness protection, tracking down a serial killer of vulnerable young girls… none of the above exactly scream ‘Lol’, and yet they’ve all become the subject of British crime comedy-dramas in recent years. The “you’ve got to laugh” mentality is clearly in our national DNA, no matter how bleak the circumstances.

The Roman Catholic Church combats a global rise in demonic possessions by reopening schools to train priests to perform exorcisms. Although nuns are forbidden to perform this ritual, a professor recognizes Sister Ann’s gifts and agrees to train her. Thrust onto the spiritual frontline, she soon finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl who’s possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother years earlier.

Pretty much from the moment the sci-fi action classic Predator was released in 1987, fans were wondering what it would be like if the alien hunter from that film were to clash with the xenomorphs from the Alien franchise. The DC Comics entry earned 7.5 million on Friday, marking a 72 fall from its opening day last week. Some rivals expect the Warner Bros. release to earn 24 million in its sophomore weekend.
That figure would mark a substantial 63 drop from last week’s opening of 67 million. Even for a superhero film — a genre that tends to yield front-loaded box office performances — that’s on the heftier side. It’s a good bit steeper than the second weekend tumbles of recent comic book films like “The Batman” (-50) and “Eternals” (-62). Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Thor: Love and Thunder” held...

With the Halloween season nearing its end, we are getting one last genre theater experience with Daniel Stamm’s second exorcism outing, Prey For the Devil. With his last addition, The Last Exorcism doing big at the box office, Lionsgate is hoping for a similar return with Prey For the Devil. I was lucky enough to sit down with director Daniel Stamm and stars Jacqueline Byers and Christian Navarro to talk about the film and the exorcism sub-genre as a whole.
Prey For the Devil has the following synopsis:
In response to a global rise in demonic possessions, the Catholic Church reopens exorcism schools to train priests in the Rite of Exorcism. On this spiritual battlefield, an unlikely warrior rises: a young nun, Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers). Although nuns are forbidden to perform exorcisms, a professor (Colin Salmon) recognizes Sister Ann’s gifts and agrees to train her. Thrust onto...

New Line/DC’s Black Adam ends its first week with 83.4M, which is slightly ahead of what Dwayne Johnson’s Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw did in its first week at 83.1M. That’s impressive considering that this is a deeper universe DC character, and the other was connected to a long-established franchise, not to mention it debuted in the summer. Hobbs & Shaw ended its domestic run at 173.9M. The pic’s second weekend was 36.5M, and currently Black Adam is expected to come in lighter at 27M-30M in weekend two. The anti-hero’s Thursday gross was 3.1M, -8 from Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate has the sole, new wide release this weekend in the PG-13 horror film, Prey for the Devil, which isn’t expected to do much in the high single digits at 2,980 locations. Lionsgate typically launches a genre title around Halloween, i.e. their Boo! A...

Plot: Demonic possessions are rising, so the Catholic Church has put exorcist training courses on the fast track. But Sister Ann, a nun with a personal history of it, is forbidden to train until that personal history comes back in a dangerous way.
Review:The exorcist sub-genre has always lived in the immense shadow of 1973’s The Exorcist. Like Jaws for shark movies, exorcism is culturally linked to one main entry and has set the bar high on quality and execution. It’s hard not to compare Prey for the Devil to Friedkin’s classic in some way. And though director Daniel Stamm plays within a well-worn toy chest, he still delivers a fun popcorn experience. It may lean more toward the pop aesthetic James Wan ushered in, in terms of jump scares than deep terror, but it’s still a fun time if you go in knowing it’s that type of flick.

Twelve years ago director Daniel Stamm was considered in some quarters as having revivified a subgenre with “The Last Exorcism.” That sleeper hit that was no classic, but it took itself seriously in the right ways, as put across by a good cast including the estimable (and still underused) Ashley Bell. Since 2014’s less successful “13 Sins,” he’s been occupied with episodic TV work. Unsurprisingly, his first feature in eight years marks a return to the general terrain that worked for him before.
“Prey for the Devil” won’t likely spur enthusiasm equal to Stamm’s breakout film, despite the relative novelty value of being built around a female exorcist — something not so unprecedented (at least onscreen) as billed, last year’s Veracruz-set “The Old Ways” being just one other example. Still, even if it falls short of being particularly memorable or scary, this is a decently entertaining possession potboiler.

A tale as old as time; a Catholic church representative must battle their inner demons to save the soul of a possessed child. Prey for the Devil attempts to retell this tired story with the gimmick of an aspiring female exorcist but never manages to pull together a narrative cohesive or scary enough to rise above a patchwork of familiar possession horror tropes.
It’s 2018. Demonic possession cases have become so prevalent that the Catholic Church has created schools with the sole purpose of teaching priests the Rite of Exorcism while nuns act as bedside nurses to the possessed. Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers) finds herself drawn to the role of exorcist, even sneaking into exclusive male classes taught by Father Quinn (Colin Salmon), to the chagrin of her superior. Her persistent pursuit of exorcism studies and personal approach to nursing eventually puts her on the frontline of the battle to...

It seems like the box office is slowly rebounding after a couple slower months, but this weekend, “Black Adam” won’t have much in terms of competition for the top spot, so it will score an easy second weekend at #1 probably with around 28 to 30 million or a little more. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any new movies in wide release. In fact, there’s just one, and that’s Lionsgate’s much-delayed and name-changed horror flick “Prey for the Devil,” an exorcism horror drama directed by Daniel Stamm (“The Last Exorcism”). It stars Jacqueline Byers (“Salvation”) as Sister Ann, a rare female exorcist, who has to deal with a few cases of demonic possession. It also stars Virginia Madsen and Colin Salmon, both of whom have quite a bit of genre experience.

The Resident Evil franchise is responsible for some of the most chilling moments in interactive media, forcing players to confront man-eating biohazards since the mid 90s. This massive success is ongoing, with new sequels and remakes releasing pretty much every year, but what I think is amazing is that this series of games with little to no regard for conventional storytelling is somehow the franchise that spawned seven big-screen adaptations, a handful of animated films and a short-lived TV show. Meanwhile, there’s still no sign of that Metal Gear Solid movie!
Don’t get me wrong, the Resident Evil games boast plenty of memorable characters with interesting backstories, but these titles have always been more about the player-driven narrative derived from personally outsmarting Umbrella and escaping horrific situations rather than any cohesive yarn. That’s why it’s no surprise that the first Resident Evil movie actually has very...

Since its original run in 1963 and its revival in 2005, "Doctor Who" has been airing for 60 years. It's the longest-running sci-fi series in history, and we're approaching closer to its anticipated 60th-anniversary special by the day. From William Hartnell to Jodie Whittaker, we have, so far, witnessed 13 different, distinguished incarnations of the renegade Time Lord, each personality distinct, with its own quirks and idiosyncrasies. Every few years, the protagonist of the renowned BBC series reinvents itself to feature a new presence. The regeneration storyline in "Doctor Who" is a creative tool employed to hire different actors to lead the show — and also a fictional biological ability exhibited by the Time Lords as a means of cheating death. Every familiar face transforms into a new one; the character might prove to have a sticky memory now and then, but each Time Lord retains most of their experiences.

Is it really 20 years since Milla Jovovich’s Alice first kicked zombie ass in a red dress? The movie inspired by the much loved video game series spawned five sequels and a 2021 reboot, and has become a significant entry in movie zombie lore. Yet, lots of people think the films are rubbish. As Wikipedia puts it:
“Despite all the installments receiving generally negative reviews from critics, the Resident Evil film series has grossed over $1.2 billion.”
Well someone must like those films, surely?
Two decades on, Den of Geek has decided to revisit the original to work out once and for all whether this is a misunderstood masterpiece or a perfectly well understood trash fire. Movies Editor David Crow and UK Editor Rosie Fletcher had a rewatch and fundamentally disagreed. They duke it out below.
Rosie Fletcher: Paul W.S. Anderson probably isn’t the best director called Paul Anderson working currently.

Exclusive: Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American rights to Double Play, the latest feature from award-winning filmmaker Ernest Dickerson. The digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group/Entertainment Studios will release the film, based on Curaçaoan author Frank Martinus Arion’s internationally acclaimed Dutch-language novel Dubbelspel, on digital and VOD platforms on February 22.
Double Play is a drama set against the beauty and bittersweet complexity of Curacao, where poverty and wealth are two sides of the same coin. It follows Ostrik (Dani Dare), who is now a grown man working as a doctor in the Netherlands, as he returns to his childhood home to confront ghosts of his past revealed to him in a mysterious letter. Through his memories, we witness the sometimes-dangerous moves that adults made for the sake of survival in a time of turmoil and colonial unrest during the 1970s.
