The Land of Smiles is trampled by an amphibious monster in Lee Thongkham and Aqing Xu’s creature-feature The Lake. After a mysterious egg washes ashore, an unknown predator rises from the Mekong River and goes on a rampage. The massive stars of this Thai-Chinese co-production are an achievement in modern kaiju effects, and a few set pieces are engaging, however the film as a whole is weighed down by a nondescript story and a cast of dreary characters.
The Lake is a contemporary update of all those straightforward kaiju classics of yesteryear, such as Mothra and Gorgo. Here a larger than life monster’s offspring is also stolen by humans, driving the parent to take drastic measures. This includes the near decimation of a Thai village toward the film’s beginning. The mayhem born from this ferocious attack alone is elevated by animatronic and suitmation effects as well as forceful editing.

A big budget Thai/Chinese co-production, this year’s brand new monster movie The Lake has now unleashed a brand new trailer, this one equipped with English subtitles.
It’s also a much better trailer all around, giving us several clear shots of the incredible practical monster designed by artist Jordu Schell (Cloverfield, The Thing, Starship Troopers, The Mist, Feast, Avatar, Men in Black, Planet of the Apes, The Cabin in the Woods, Predators).
The monster in The Lake was brought to life using practical life-sized animatronics alongside CGI, and the glimpses we get of the beast here are absolutely jaw-dropping to behold.
In The Lake, “One child brings back a strange egg, soon realizing that it’s a monster egg. It emerged from the lake, and it now wants to kill everyone in the whole town.”
The film released theatrically in Thailand on August 18, with no U.S. date at this time.

"Mission control: we have a critical situation!" Uncork'd has unveiled an official trailer for an anthology film featuring a series of sci-fi shorts called Battle in Space - The Armada Attacks. This plays like a low-budget, B-movie collection of space battle stories and despite the low quality, it still looks rather fun. In 2420, after aliens and powerful space wizards enslaved human villages, a group of rebels organize a counter attack against their alien overlords by piloting fully loaded spaceships. Acclaimed actor Doug Jones stars in this as an alien, and the cast also includes Erik Palladino, Douglas Tait, Trip Hope, Jordu Schell, Linda Weinrib, Toby Rawal, Tom Farrah, Tom Madden, Declan Churchill Carter, Alexis Watt, and Philip Cristian Classen. I really wasn't expecting much from this, but I will admit there's some cool shots in this trailer that make me curious. Maybe there's some cool sci-fi stories hidden in here?...

The history of horror cinema has been filled with iconic villains who end up becoming the anchor of a franchise, being the only consistent element across several movies. One such villain is Jason Voorhees, who first made an appearance in the 1980 film Friday the 13th, and has subsequently appeared in eleven other movies, as well as comic books and novels, including a crossover with The Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Freddy Krueger in 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason. Now, however, the villain will be coming to the small screen, as The CW has announced that they are formally working on a tv adaptation of the horror franchise.

Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan, and Zack Snyder have all done what most superhero junkies could only dream of doing: direct a Batman movie. But there was one other filmmaker privileged enough to have suited up the masked manhunter for cinema, achieving almost overnight success in 2003 and a cult classic amongst Batman fans—without the “superpowers” of a million dollar budget or the tyranny of studio executives. The director: Sandy Collora. The film: Batman: Dead End.
“Behind The Mask”, a 90-minute documentary on the life and career of Sandy Collora, was shown recently at Monsterpalooza in Burbank, CA, telling the story of the indie filmmaker’s refusal to “sell out” to major studios and finding satisfaction in directing his own films.

About a week ago, a short film called "The Leviathan" appeared online and immediately got the attention of sci-fi lovers. The film became so popular that it got the attention of 20th Century Fox, which just announced that it will turn the project into a feature film. "The Leviathan" is directed by Ruairi Robinson, who is best known for being the first director attached to Warner Bros' live-action "Akira" movie. The short film is written by Jim Uhls (Fight Club) and contains creature design by Jordu Schell, one of the main designers on "Avatar." Fox already attached Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) to produce and Neill Blomkamp (director of "District 9" and "Chappie") to executive produce. Uhls will provide the screenplay. Check out the short film below and here's the plot synopsis: By the early 22nd century mankind had colonized many worlds. Faster than light travel was made...

Pining for those long summer days and blood-spattered nights at Camp Crystal Lake? Then you’re in for a treat. In addition to a new Friday the 13th feature film set for release in early 2015, we recently reported that a Friday the 13th TV series was in development.
While the series is still a long ways away from airing, some light was recently shed on the project by the creator of the franchise himself, Sean S. Cunningham, who will also executive produce the TV series.
In a recent interview about the TV series with Bloody Disgusting, Cunningham discussed Jason’s aging process, protagonist Tommy Jarvis’ potential involvement, and how Jason’s father Elias Voorhees could be explored in the show:

Not simply content with a $91 million worldwide gross for its 2009 “Friday The 13th” remake, Platinum Dunes decided to pull an “Amazing Spider-Man” and announce an unnecessary second reboot in the works for 2015. However strange the decision may be though, it’s served as a new chance for those behind the property to expand the Jason Voorhees universe, and now they’ve chosen to do that to the tune of weekly hour-long installments. Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Crystal Lake Entertainment have announced (via Deadline) that they plan to produce a drama series based upon “Friday the 13th” for TV, to be executive produced as well by Sean S. Cunningham, director of the 1980 original. Writers Bill Basso and Jordu Schell have been tapped to script a new storyline based around Crystal Lake, one that will reportedly feature Jason in “multiple time periods,” and also reveal new secrets of the Voorhees clan.

It was recently reported that "V/H/S" helmer David Bruckner is in talks to direct the new "Friday the 13th" reboot. And now comes word that the film franchise is also heading back to television for a new hour-long series. "Friday the 13th" was already a TV series in the 80s, but had very little to do with the films. The new version will follow Jason Vorhees and will place the killer in multiple time periods. Other characters will be residents of Crystal Lake, who are forced to confront the return of Jason, as new secrets about his family are revealed. Bill Basso (Terminator) and Jordu Schell (Avatar) have been hired to write the script. Sean Cunningham, who directed the 1980 original film, will be an executive producer. He said: "Expect the show to take viewers in some exciting new directions that we're confident will not only excite existing fans...

It would seem that Jason Voorhees really does go on forever. After the original movie was released in 1980, it was not just the career of the young Kevin Bacon that was spawned, but an entire mythology that would run endlessly into the most fantastical of directions. Now, apparently, Jason will rise again in a new Friday The 13th TV series.
For the writer/director of the original, Sean S. Cunningham, his attempt to cash in on the success of Halloween two years previously was seemingly a simple story of a vengeful mother, who – lost in grief for her drowned child – goes on a killing spree at an idyllic camp on the shores of Crystal Lake. By the time it reached theatres, however, it had captured the imaginations of an entire generation, and entered into the annals of pop culture.

We know Jason Voorhees likes to take his sweet time when he’s stalking his victims on the big screen in the Friday The 13th franchise. But it seems he’s taking too long to make it back to cinemas for some of the people responsible for his creation, so a new TV series based on the character is now in the early stages.Sean S. Cunningham, the man who wrote the story and directed the original Friday The 13th (which admittedly was more focused on – spoiler alert – Mrs. Voorhees as the killer, who takes revenge for her son’s accidental death at Camp Crystal Lake), will be the executive producer for the new show. Actual writing duties will fall to Bill Basso and Jordu Schell, who have been set to create a series that explores Jason in different time periods, though anchored around a modern-day story. It seems Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Crystal Lake Entertainment think it's a good idea to produce a weekly hour-long tv series based around indestructible murderer Jason Vorhees and his vacuous victims. Original Friday The 13th director Sean S. Cunningham is on board as an executive producer, and had this to say about the project. “Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide.” Apparently writers Bill Basso (Terminator) and Jordu Schell (Avatar) will script a tale that "re-imagines Jason Voorhees in multiple time periods," and focuses on "the eclectic characters of Crystal Lake who are forced to confront the return of the killer, as new secrets about his wacky family are revealed." I have no idea what we can expect from this aside from weekly doses...

Looking to prove that some horror franchises are truly timeless, a group of producers is planning to turn "Friday the 13th" into a TV series, starring a Jason Voorhees who travels through different eras.
Deadline reports that Sean S. Cunningham, the director of the 1980 original "13th" flick, is among the group working on an hour-long dramatic series that "re-imagines Jason in multiple time periods," revolving around different characters that wander into Crystal Lake, the setting of the franchise's 12 films.
"Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide," Cunningham told Deadline.
Robert Barsamian, who produced the original movies, added, "Expect the show to take viewers in some exciting new directions that we're confident will not only excite existing fans of 'Friday The 13th' but also...

The "Friday the 13th" franchise is heading back to the small screen. Deadline reports that, unlike the late '80s series that borrowed only the name from the slasher film franchise, the new show will follow Jason Vorhees, reimagining the supernatural killer in a variety of different time periods. Bill Basso and Jordu Schell are attached to script with Roy Knyrim signed on to provide the makeup effects. "Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre," says Sean S. Face Off Episode 504
“Subterranean Terror”
Original Airdate: 3 September 2013
In This Episode...
The contestants must create their own subterranean creature. They are sent beneath an abandoned power station, where six “rooms” have different clues and themes. Each contestant must choose a room to interpret. Art director and creature designer Jordu Schell is the guest judge this week.
The Creations
Roy had some major problems. He planned a gigantic octopus / worm creature that would have his model crawling on all fours. Unfortunately, he poured the wrong type of foam into his massive mold, and had to scrap the whole thing. He had a face sculpt that was still useable, and built slap-dash tentacle arms to go with. The judges knew it was bad; Roy knew it was bad. They all kind of accepted it and moved on.
Scott... well, I’m not really sure what he was going for. Neither did the judges.

Tgif, kids! The weekend is upon on, and we have the perfect way to kick off your Friday morning! In honor of films like The Host, Godzilla, and Pacific Rim, we have on tap for you a giant monster of the man-eating kind who is in no way lactose intolerant.
Check out one hungry monster in this commercial for Cheese in Paris created by the great talent over at Mikros Image. It's rocking some killer creature design by Jordu Schell, who incidentally was the lead creature designer on Avatar. As Foy would say, in this case or in the case of commercials everywhere... a merman or a sea creature always makes everything better!
Thanks to DC reader Avery G for sending this one over! Dig it!

Sometimes you see things that simply blow your mind, and today, my friends, you shall see just that.
An artist by the name of Jordu Schell recently completed work on a life-size bust of infamous Star Wars villain, Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, who was played by the late, great British actor, Peter Cushing. His work is so mind-bogglingly realistic, you have to see it to believe it. If you had this in your home and woke up late one night for a bathroom run, you would no doubt think that Tarkin had returned, and that he wanted your flat screen.

Even the biggest and busiest in the business have humble beginnings, and few people know that as well as Jordu Schell. Now at the top of the FX world, working on movies like 300, Avatar, and Dawn Of The Dead to name a few, Schell’s first gig was on the genre trailer compilation Mad Ron’S Prevues From Hell, first released on VHS in 1987 and finally available now on DVD from Virgil Films.
