Once an upstart and now a company to contend with, Britain’s Indicator continues their series of Hammer Studio releases with Hammer Volume Six: Night Shadows, a purely generic subtitle fit for any horror film, Hammer or otherwise. What isn’t generic is Indicator’s winning formula—top notch image quality and boatloads of extra materials including documentaries, commentaries, image galleries—the works. The films in their latest set are already available stateside in more than adequate Blu ray versions—but Indicator’s work prevails on the sheer magnitude and quality of their content.

Graham Greene’s tense crime tale is as important as his classic The Third Man but nowhere near as well known. Down Brighton way the race-track boys have sharp ways of solving disputes and terrorizing the common folk — think ‘straight razor.’ Richard Attenborough’s breakthrough film is also a showcase for Hermoine Baddelely and a marvelous newcomer that every horror fan loves even if they don’t know her name, Carol Marsh. Kino’s disc has a Tim Lucas commentary; this review balances thoughts about mercy and damnation, with an extra insight about a piece of ‘stick candy’ unfamiliar to us Yanks.

Have the classic films of Hammer been subjected to more reissues than The Beatles? Not by a long shot but it can feel that way to dedicated Hammer-heads. The relentless tide of upgrades and re-packagings both foreign and domestic, each with their own pleasures and pitfalls, could inspire loyal fans to lobby for their own version of the Consumer Protection Agency – Home Video Division. Here’s a look at what should have been the definitive collection – from 2016, Universal’s Hammer Horror 8 Film Collection.

When production began on the inevitable sequel to Hammer’s Horror of Dracula, Peter Cushing returned as Van Helsing but Christopher Lee’s Count was missing in action – fortunately Cushing was presented with an equally intimidating antagonist in Martita Hunt as the implacable Baroness Meinster.

I’m a big fan of horror comedy. It’s a combination that isn’t easy to get right, but when it is done well it can be hilarious. A couple of my favorite horror comedies in recent years include The Cabin in the Woods, Tucker Dale Vs. Evil, and Hell Baby. Horror comedies have been around forever, though, and I had to include one of them in the 1950s horror movie column that I’ve been writing this month for Halloween.
The next film on my list is the 1959 film The Headless Ghost. The story follows three college students, two Americans and a girl from Denmark, who take a day trip from London to visit an old English castle called Ambrose Castle. The three students hide in the castle after it is closed to see if the legends of the ghosts they heard about were real. There they find the headless ghost.

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan had a pretty exhausting press tour for Fifty Shades of Grey, but they never had to put up with anything quite like this. Saturday Night Live Cast member Kyle Mooney plays a middle-school-aged journalist named Peter Scott who's tasked with grilling host Johnson during the Fifty Shades press tour. His line of questioning is… obtuse, to say the least, but Mooney brings an honest, disarming sweetness to the character, with lines like, "Because of artists like you, my father and I get a little time together." Variety reports that Geoffrey Sax (Frankie and Alice, White Noise) has signed on to direct Unmasked, a psychological thriller written by newcomer Peter Scott Vicaire. The movie follows a man who joins an underground club for the sole purpose of reliving the worst day of his life. Vicaire’s script has obvious Fight Club influences but according to the article it also has shades of Stanley Kubrick‘s Eyes Wide Shut so it’s completely understandable why the director of Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker was courted for the job (that’s sarcasm folks!).
All (painfully unfunny) joking aside, Unmasked definitely sounds interesting and I’m intrigued about the details of this supposed “worst day ever” that the main character is dying to relive. And as a White Noise apologist, I’m not totally against having Sax in the director’s chair; he’s handled psychological themes before and he’s capable.

In his weekly natural history talk on Radio 4 last Sunday morning, David Attenborough spoke of his love of mysterious creatures such as the yeti and the hopes he shared with the late Peter Scott that there really is a monster in Loch Ness. In this superior Imax documentary he explains with characteristic authority and enthusiasm how the first giant, leathery creatures flew 160 million years ago. He has a great deal of instructive fun getting fossilised lizards to jump out from the rocks that contain them and strut around. In one hilarious scene, while Attenborough is talking to a leading palaeontologist, a reconstructed pterosaur jumps out of a computer screen and skitters across the floor. O Brave Lost World that has such creatures in it!

This week sees a ton of genre movies coming out on DVD and Blu- Ray. The biggest being Predators, followed up by the remake of the cult classic Night of the Demons, a sequel to Mirrors, and Anniversary editions for Rocky Horror Picture Show and Psycho. Add to that a slew of indie and classic horror and there is a lot to choose from.
Predators
Directed by Nimród Antal
Robert Rodriguez presents Predators, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors mysteriously brought together on a jungle planet. But when these cold-blooded human “predators” find themselves in all-out war against a new breed of alien Predators, it’s the ultimate showdown between hunter and prey. Predators also star Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Oleg Taktarov, and Louis Ozawa Changchien.

The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.
Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

Rob Zombie posted the below flyer on his MySpace page under the subject header "What is Laurie Strode doing this year for Halloween?" I presume this is a plot teaser for something to come in next year's H2 as Zombie is known for dropping hints about his upcoming projects via his blog. ("Captain Clegg and the Night Creatures" is a nice touch, a nod to Peter Graham Scott's Hammer Films production starring Peter Cushing.) This probably won't be the last teaser to come from the man, so Shock will keep you posted as more developments arise.
