There are a few moments on Saturday Night Live that make the audience gasp. Sinead O’Connor tearing a picture of the Pope was one. Fortunately, most of those get cut before they go live. Still, Saturday Night Live records the dress rehearsals and some of those sketches have appeared since. Longtime SNL Head Writer Jim Downey remembers a Norm Macdonald Weekend Update joke that was so shocking, they used the sound of the audience gasping in live shows later.

The debut of David Spade’s new late-night program is drawing closer.
Comedy Central said the program, “Lights Out with David Spade” would debut after its signature “The Daily Show” Monday, July 29 at 11:30 p.m. eastern. The series, will follow Trevor Noah’s evening program Monday through Thursday each week.
“Lights Out” is something different for Comedy Central – a program in the post “Daily” slot that doesn’t center on political discussion. For years, the Viacom-owned cable outlet has followed “Daily” with variations on its theme: comedic program that analyze the day’s social and political headlines. “Lights Out” will fill a place previously occupied by Stephen Colbert’s “Colbert Report,” Larry Wilmore’s “Nightly Show” and Jordan Klepper’s “The Opposition.”

Exclusive: Netflix is going old-school, ordering six episodes of Historical Roasts, a half-hour comedy series from Comedy Central roast star Jeff Ross and Obb Pictures. The project stems from the popular live Los Angeles comedy club show that has been running since 2014. Obb (Kevin Hart’s Cold as Balls) optioned rights to the show and then secured the deal with Netflix which beat out multiple bidders. Production begins this fall and the show launches next year.
Each episode will bring together A-list comedians in period-appropriate garb and character to roast historical figures. No word on the roastees yet, but the live shows have featured everyone from Abraham Lincoln and Jimmy Hendrix to Michael Jackson and William Shakespeare.
“People always ask me who my dream roast would be — this concept allows me to finally roast them all. Plus, I’ll be learning a lot along the way,” said Ross, who anchors...

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Some movies will always make me laugh, but let’s face it; the same movies might make others yawn. Comedy is tricky business, the hardest genre to pull off from script to screen. I’ve put together a list of 10 More underrated or dismissed comedies that deserve a first chance or even a second chance at recognition. Humor is subjective, but gives these flicks a chance and I promise you will enjoy yourself.
Check out the first 10 here and 10 more below; let me know what you think and what your list might look like.
Beer League
An unemployed slacker inspires his softball teammates to improve their game so they won’t get kicked out of the local league.
Director: Frank Sebastiano
Writers: Frank Sebastiano, Artie Lange
Stars: Artie Lange, Ralph Macchio
I found a double disc DVD for this in a sale bin (not a surprise) for $5, it was well worth it.

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.
8:00
Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.

NEW YORK -- Arriving just a few weeks after the similarly sloshed "Beerfest", "Artie Lange's Beer League" is yet another ode to the pleasures of overindulgence. The experience of watching this loosely plotted comedy set in the suburbs of New Jersey is somewhat akin to spending a nice Summer Day playing softball with your friends. Only without the sun, the fresh air, the exercise or the fun.
Well, the last is not entirely true. "Beer League", for all its ramshackle qualities, actually does offer a few lowbrow laughs along the way. Lange (best known these days as Howard Stern's on-air sidekick), who produced, co-wrote and stars, displays an amiably relaxed screen presence that makes the film not entirely unpleasant to sit through.
Here he plays a character clearly not too far from his own persona. A heavy drinker, smoker and heavyweight in general, the unemployed Lange is the sort of guy who pronounces the word "whore" with two syllables.
The plot, such as it is, has to do with Lange's rivalry with a sleazy, Speedo-wearing gym-owner (Anthony De Sando) who heads an opposing softball league and his burgeoning romance with Linda (Cara Buono), a woman who has been around the block a few times and is willing to sleep with him after she has had a few drinks.
Directed by co-writer Frank Sebastiano as if he was doing it on weekends in his spare time, the film trafficks in the expected vulgarity, with one lengthy sequence devoted to a prostitute's ability to propel pingpong balls in a particularly intimate fashion.
Among the familiar names and faces on display who were clearly paying off some kind of debt are: Laurie Metcalf, as Lange's rather too close mother; Seymour Cassel, no doubt sadly remembering that he used to work with the likes of John Cassavetes; Ralph Macchio, still maintaining his "Karate Kid" wholesomeness; and Louis Lombardi, best known as the late, lamented Edgar Stiles on "24."...
