Phnom Penh, April 24 (Ians) Cambodia has seen a sharp drop in malaria cases in the last 11 years, recording no deaths from the disease since 2018, Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Monday.
In a message to mark National Malaria Day, Hun Sen said the Southeast Asian country reported 4,041 cases in 2022, a huge decrease from more than 110,000 cases with over 500 deaths a year before 2011, reports Xinhua news agency.
“Since 2018 to date, there have been no deaths from malaria,” he said.
“The government is committed to totally eradicating malaria in the country by 2025.”
Huy Rekol, director of the National Centrefor Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, attributed the sharp drop in malaria cases to people’s better surveillance response, awareness, adequate equipment such as malaria testing devices, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, and anti-malarial drugs.
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease, which is often found in rainy seasons and mostly happens in forest and mountainous provinces.

Phnom Penh, March 3 (Ians) Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen has called for an end to a brawl with Thailand over the name of a kickboxing event at the Southeast Asian (Sea) Games in Cambodia in May.
Speaking at an annual cultural gathering here, Hun Sen said on Thursday as the hosts of the games, Cambodia had named the kickboxing event as Kun Khmer, but Thailand wanted it to be named Muay Thai.
Cambodian officials insist that the sport originated from their Khmer culture, while Thailand claims that it belongs to them, Xinhua news agency reported.
The Prime Minister added the two neighbours should not have bad blood over the kickboxing event name, saying that Kun Khmer belongs to Cambodia, while Muay Thai belongs to Thailand.
“There should be a reconciliation. If the Sea Games is held in Cambodia, the kickboxing event name must be called Kun Khmer, and...

Phnom Penh, Oct 21 (Ians) Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Friday that the country has not reported any Covid-19 deaths since April this year.
“This is a success that resulted from our joint efforts in the fight against Covid-19,” he said.
Hun Sen added the Southeast Asian nation reported zero Covid-19 cases for the first time on Friday after daily infections had been detected since late June.
“Today, Cambodia found no even a single case of Covid-19,” he said.
However, Cambodia is not Covid-19-free yet, as it still has 53 active cases, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).
Thong Mengdavid, a research fellow at the Phnom Penh-based Asian Vision Institute, attributed the success in the pandemic fight to the kingdom’s strong leadership and high vaccination rates.
The kingdom has so far administered at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccines to 15.21 million people, or 95 per cent of its 16 million population,...

Australian documentary filmmaker James Ricketson was Friday sentenced to six years in jail in Cambodia. He was found guilty of espionage.
Ricketson has been held in prison for the past 14 months. During the seven day trial he denied the charges.
Prosecutors said that he was working with the political opposition to the country’s leader Hun Sen, and had worked with a foreign power.
On his way back to jail, after receiving the verdict, Ricketson was heard shouting “Who am I spying for?” That question was never answered in court and Ricketson repeatedly insisted that his work is not political.
“Since he arrived in Cambodia, the accused person has been collecting political, social and economic information about Cambodia and sending it to a foreign state,” prosecutor Sieng Sok said. “He has kept collecting this information for 22 years, until the day he was arrested. Australian documentary filmmaker James Ricketson was convicted today of espionage for an unnamed country by the Cambodian government and sentenced to six years in that country’s prison system.
Ricketson was arrested in June 2017 and charged with endangering national security by flying a drone over an opposition party rally. The charges mushroomed from there.
The soon-to-be 69-year-old filmmaker’s incarceration has sparked international outrage by his fellow filmmakers, most prominently director Phillip Noyce, with many fearing he won’t survive the rigors of Cambodian prison.
“The guilty verdict against James Ricketson is a massive miscarriage of justice,” Noyce posted on Facebook. “I call on filmmakers the world over to join me in offering ourselves to Cambodian authorities as equally guilty of all the crimes James is accused of. We must journey to Cambodia and present our selves on mass as ready to join him in Cambodian prison.
