Darryl Hickman, who appeared in such films as The Grapes of Wrath and Leave Her to Heaven as a youngster before becoming a CBS executive in charge of daytime drama and an actor once more, has died. He was 92.
Hickman, who lived in Montecito, died Wednesday, his family announced.
He was the older brother (by three years) of the late Dwayne Hickman, who starred on the 1959-63 CBS comedy The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Darryl appeared with his brother in Captain Eddie (1945) — he played famed fighter pilot Eddie Rickenbacker as a boy — and on three first-season episodes of Dobie as older brother Davey, who came home from college.
In 1951, after appearances in more than 40 movies, Hickman — who had been a contract player at Paramount and MGM — became disillusioned with the business and entered a monastery, though he was back in show business before long.

Guitar legend Slash is set to perform with Cleto and the Cletones across three nights next week on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
From May 20-22, the Guns N’ Roses guitarist will perform songs from his new record “Orgy Of The Damned,” an album of blues covers that features collaborations with Demi Lovato, Chris Stapleton, Steven Tyler, and Iggy Pop.
Slash isn’t the first artist to stick around at Jkl for more than one night. Metallica made headlines in March of 2023 when they performed songs on the show four nights in a row, and it was six years ago that David Letterman’s bandleader Paul Shaffer joined the show’s house band for a week of shows in Brooklyn.
Slash has appeared solo on the Kimmel show 4 times for performances or interviews, most recently in 2022. He also played the show twice with his band Velvet Revolver.

David Sanborn, the six time Grammy-winning alto saxophonist who played at Woodstock, composed music for the Lethal Weapon movies, played in the SNL and Late Night with David Letterman bands and worked with everyone from Stevie Wonder to David Bowie, died Sunday afternoon, May 12th, after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications. He Was 78.
Sanborn’s music is often described “smooth jazz,” but he reportedly rejected that characterization, and one can see why. His lively, iconic sax solo on Bowie’s “Young Americans” is anything but. Sanborn preferred the idea that he “put the saxophone back into rock ’n’ roll.”
Indeed, he worked with a virtual who’s who of rock and R&b legends, including James Brown, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Elton John, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Roger Waters, Steely Dan, the Eagles,...

There’s a surplus of Jimmys in late night these days, but David Letterman was the first—way back in 1995.
Letterman’s official YouTube channel has just resurfaced highlights from an entire episode the original Late Show host did under a different name. Presciently, he chose “Jimmy.”
“For a long time, Paul and myself and the production staff have wondered, ‘How would this show be different if instead of my name being Dave Letterman, my name was Jimmy Letterman?’” Letterman explained to viewers in a cold open for the episode. “So that’s what we’re going to do tonight.”
With that, the show launched into an altered “Late Show with Jimmy Letterman” title sequence, complete with a Jimmified version of Letterman’s famous marquee.
Everyone in the episode played along with the name change, from announcer Alan Kalter to Paul Shaffer to guest Mia Farrow (who gifted him a...

Letterman fans who missed their chance at owning a piece of his old Late Show marquee are getting another chance.
David Letterman announced on his YouTube channel yesterday that another portion of the marquee from his time at the Ed Sullivan Theater—the part that says “featuring Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra”—will be raffled off for charity. Shaffer joined Letterman for the announcement and offered some background on the sign and his decision to part with it.
“At a certain point, Dave was nice enough to put my name on the marquee, too,” Shaffer remembered. “I had my name in lights on Broadway, just like the song. It was thrilling.”
According to Shaffer, the sign has been in his basement since Letterman’s Late Show ended. When Letterman suggested he auction it off for charity last year, Shaffer initially said he was “never going to part with it.

David Letterman’s albatross has been lifted—and it’s now living its best life in Connecticut.
The albatross, in this case, is the iconic blue-and-yellow Late Show marquee that hung outside New York City’s Ed Sullivan Theater for two decades. “A year or two ago, we realized we had this big hunk of plastic with the Late Show sign on it,” Letterman explained in a new video he posted to his YouTube channel Wednesday.
Not knowing what to do with the sign, the late-night legend decided that rehoming it was the best possible option—and to do it in the name of charity. In November 2023, Letterman and his longtime bandleader Paul Shaffer (whose name is also on the sign) announced a sweepstakes where anyone who donated $10 or more to Habitat for Humanity would be entered to win the 20-foot-wide sign. The promotion ended up raising a whopping $116,000 for the organization.

For 30 years it stood outside The Ed Sullivan Theatre, now it’s at a fan’s home.
Earlier this week David Letterman personally delivered a section from his old show’s marquee to a fan in New Jersey. Letterman is seen posing in front of it in an image posted his social media channels Friday morning.
We’re told a crew from Letterman’s YouTube channel tagged along, and that a video will be posted sometime next week.
It was last fall that Letterman and his former bandleader Paul Shaffer jointly announced a sweepstakes benefitting Habitat For Humanity, with the marquee as the grand prize. Letterman has been a longtime supporter of the nonprofit that helps build and improve homes for low income families.
All told, the sweepstakes raised over $100,000. It also apparently had the side benefit of helping Letterman unload the huge 8ft x 20ft sign that had been...

The list of musicians and actors appearing in the long-awaited This Is Spinal Tap sequel keeps growing, with news that Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, The Nanny’s Fran Drescher, and more will appear in the forthcoming mockumentary.

Other newly revealed additions to the movie include Don Lake (The Bonnie Hunt Show), John Michael Higgins (Best in Show), Jason Acuña (Jackass), Nina Conti (Family Tree), Griffin Matthews (The Flight Attendant), Kerry Godliman (After Life), Chris Addison (Veep), and comedian Brad Williams, according to Deadline.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith and Metallica’s Lars Ulrich will try to survive the Spinal Tap drummers curse with cameos in the upcoming This Is Spinal Tap sequel.

Though we obviously don’t know for sure, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Smith and Ulrich roped into an extension of one of the best bits from 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap...

One day in 1979, the phone rang at producer Bob Weiss’ house. “Be on your property tonight,” said the voice on the other line. According to the book Wild and Crazy Guys: The Comedy Mavericks of the ’80s Changed Hollywood Forever by Nick de Semlyen, later that evening, an object came flying over the fence and onto Weiss’ backyard. It was the script for a Blues Brothers movie that Wiess commissioned from Dan Aykroyd, who created the musical comedy act with John Belushi for Saturday Night Live.
If the way that Aykroyd delivered the manuscript was odd, the contents inside were even weirder. Titled The Return of the Blues Brothers and credited to the “Scriptatron Gl-9000,” the script was 324 pages long, far more than the 120 page standard, and filled with unlikely digressions.
Weiss shouldn’t have been surprised. Even if the 26-year-old Aykroyd had written a script before (he hadn’t...

Jerry Foley, the longtime director of David Letterman’s late night talk shows, has died. He was 68.
Foley died Sunday at Albany Medical Center in New York after a skiing accident in Vermont, TV producer Kim Reynolds, who began her career at Late Show With David Letterman alongside Foley, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The lifelong New Yorker was born in 1956 and raised in Staten Island. He served as the director and supervising producer of Letterman’s late night talk shows for 25 years — a control room feat considering Foley had to track and capture the host’s perpetual and unpredictable comedy antics.

“This is Spın̈al Tap” (with a dotless i and umlauts on the n), Rob Reiner’s legendary spoof film starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and a slew of guests like Paul Shaffer (“kick my ass!”), Fran Drescher, Bruno Kirby (“if Frank Sinatra says it’s okay!”), and Billy Crystal (“mime is money!”) was way ahead of its time as both a mockumentary and in satirizing the rock lifestyle. The film is beloved by fans, and especially musicians, and it certainly seems like there’s been a sequel already. The gang has reunited for television specials, album releases (“Break Like the Wind”), made an appearance on “The Simpsons,” and, of course, the three actors have done several similar improv-style satires, including “A Mighty Wind,” which skewers folk musicians. But there actually hasn’t been a sequel...

How many drummers does it take to make a late-night show? Well over 300 if you’re Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Drummers have been a fixture in late-night for years – think of Max Weinberg, the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band who became the bandleader for Conan O’Brien and Ed Shaughnessy on The Tonight Show with Jonny Carson – but Meyers’ NBC show has paved a new path for stick wizards.
Eric Leiderman, a producer on the show, has been overseeing a rotating group of drummers that since the show began – ten years ago on Saturday.
This has included the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Slayer’s Dave Lombardo, Guns N’ Roses’ Matt Sorum, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron, Allison Miller and Mudhoney’s Dan Peters.
As the show celebrates this anniversary, Leiderman tells Deadline how this under-the-radar scheme came about and why...

For 28 years, it was a holiday tradition for Darlene Love to perform her signature hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on David Letterman’s late night shows, but that all came to an end when he went off air in 2015. Now, they’ve reunited for Letterman’s YouTube channel to pick up where they left off.
Before Love sang “Christmas” with accompaniment from Letterman’s longtime band leader Paul Shaffer on piano, they all had a chat about the tradition. Letterman also asked Love about recently performing the song with Cher during the Rockefeller Center tree lighting special.
This prompted Love to air out her feelings about never being asked to play the song solo for the annual ceremony. “Do you know they wouldn’t hire me for that?” she said, noting that other artists have performed the track instead.

Darlene Love’s annual television performance of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” was essentially orphaned after “Late Show With David Letterman” went off the air in 2015, putting an end to the 28-year streak that had the music legend singing her signature holiday song with Paul Shaffer’s band on Letterman’s last original show before Christmas each December. But they all reunited — not over the air, but on YouTube — for a resumption of the tradition, nine years after the last time this particular caroling took place on CBS.

Christmas has finally come home: In a sweet, new YouTube video, Darlene Love reunites with David Letterman and Paul Shaffer for the first time in nine years to resume a longtime holiday tradition that capped off the Christmas episodes of Letterman’s late night talk shows for 28 years.

David Letterman is headed back to the Ed Sullivan Theater.
CBS’ Late Show With Stephen Colbert will welcome Letterman back to his former TV home as a guest Nov. 20. Colbert announced the news during the taping of Thursday’s show.
Letterman was the first host of The Late Show, moving from NBC to launch an 11:35 p.m. show on CBS in 1993. What’s 20 feet long, 8 feet high, belongs in the Smithsonian — but could end up in your garage?
The answer: The Late Show With David Letterman marquee. The familiar blue-and-yellow sign hung outside the Ed Sullivan Theater at Broadway and 53rd Street for the entire run of Letterman’s CBS late-night show, from 1993 to 2013.
Now, that oversize piece of television history, which has been sitting in storage for a decade, is the grand prize in a sweepstakes benefiting Habitat for Humanity, the Atlanta-based nonprofit that builds and repairs homes for low-income families and individuals. Letterman is a longtime supporter of the organization, having first volunteered with Habitat in New Orleans as part of its response to 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.
For a donation of $10 or more, anyone can enter the sweepstakes at GiveAwayDave.com until Dec. 31. The grand prize also includes a trip to New York City to meet Letterman and his longtime band leader Paul Shaffer.

When Lorne Michaels set out to shake up the late-night television landscape with "Saturday Night Live," there were certain, long-standing traditions he was willing to observe. One of those was the assemblage of a house band. Though the show wasted no time filling America's living rooms with the provocative music of Gil Scott-Heron, Jimmy Cliff, and Frank Zappa, the Saturday Night Live Band was an impressive if unexciting assortment of solid session musicians. And the man who brought them together was a then relatively unknown composer named Howard Shore.
The Toronto-born Shore had the inside track to the gig thanks to a friendship with Michaels that stretched back to summer camp. But while Shore had made a name for himself via the jazz fusion band Lighthouse and his score for magician Doug Henning's popular stage show "Spellbound" (which eventually transferred to Broadway as "The Magic Show"), he wasn't overly...

One of Bill Murray’s classic Saturday Night Live characters was a lounge singer who sang ridiculous lyrics to instrumental songs. His lyrics to the Star Wars theme went, “Star Wars, nothing but Star Wars…” For the show’s 40th Anniversary Special, Murray sang some new lyrics, and NBC tried to change them.

Former head writer Jim Downey was a guest on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast on May 11. Downey explained why he was so passionate to expand the lounge singer sketch, and how he fought to keep the edgy lyrics intact.

Before Star Wars, the biggest movie ever was Jaws. Jaws had a memorable theme song, so Murray sang lyrics to it on Saturday Night Live.

Seinfeld character George Costanza was based on co-creator Larry David. Jason Alexander embodied him on Seinfeld and created an indelible character. When Alexander first read the pilot script for Seinfeld, he didn’t know David from Adam. So Alexander did a Woody Allen impression in his first audition. Fortunately, NBC gave him another chance.

Viewers tuning into “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Friday got a rare treat when television bandleader Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band — legendary for their longtime affiliation with David Letterman — replaced The Roots for one-night-only as the NBC late-night talk show’s house band.
With Questlove, Black Thought and the Roots off to Los Angeles to curate and play alongside LL Cool J, De La Soul, Ice-t, Missy Elliot and others for the 2023 Grammy Awards’ 50th year anniversary tribute to hip-hop, NBC and Fallon announced Shaffer’s return to late-night on Jan. 30.
“Paul Shaffer is one of the most important musical figures in late-night history,” Fallon said in a statement Monday. “From ‘SNL’ to Letterman, he’s done it all. I’m beyond honored and excited that they’re getting the band back together.”

Paul Shaffer made his one-night-only return to late-night Friday as he sat in for the Roots on The Tonight Show.
“It’s such a coincidence we’re here tonight because 41 years ago this very week was when David Letterman came on the air right across the hall here at NBC… so this is like our 41st anniversary,” Shaffer told host Jimmy Fallon.
The former longtime Late Show bandleader and his World’s Most Dangerous Band subbed in for Questlove and company so the Roots could attend Sunday’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Showtime’s new four-part documentary Spector, focused on the spectacular rise and spectacular fall of music pioneer and convicted murderer Phil Spector, is the best possible promotion for Showtime’s four-part documentary We Need to Talk About Cosby.
It’s such a difficult tightrope to walk when you’re trying to explore a disgraced icon — not simply the separating of the art from the artist, but finding a smart way to contextualize the art within the life of the flawed person who created it.
W. Kamau Bell’s conversation starter about Bill Cosby handled this task exceptionally. It isn’t aesthetically dynamic, but We Need to Talk About Cosby is smart and challenging at every turn, forcing viewers to ponder inextricable linkages between aspects of Cosby’s career and a personal life that has seen him accused of sexual misconduct by 50+ women. Brazzos is back!
Steve Martin plays former ’80s star Charles Haden-Church, best known for playing Detective Brazzos in a TV cop procedural, during “Only Murders in the Building.” Now, the Hulu series released a tongue-in-cheek cartoon music video for Haden-Church’s fictional hit song, “Angel in Flip Flops.”
Featured in Episode 4 of the second season, Haden-Church (Martin) explains that he bonded with his ex-girlfriend’s daughter Lucy (Zoe Colletti) while singing the “pitta patta, pitta patta” chorus of his 1989 summer track. The “hit” song debuted at number 83 on the German music charts — right before the Berlin Wall fell.
“Angel in Flip Flops” is written by Martin and Kirker Butler and is produced by Paul Schaffer.
“I am as proud of ‘Angel in Flip Flops’ as I am of any work I’ve done that is not that good,” Martin, who is the co-creator and executive producer of “Only Murders,” joked in a press statement.

“Angel in Flip Flops,” the fictional ’80s not-quite-a-hit single from Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, just got a real life music video and streaming single release.
“I am as proud of ‘Angel in Flip Flops’ as I am of any work I’ve done that is not that good,” said Steve Martin, the Only Murders co-creator, EP, and star whose character, Charles-Haden Savage, recorded and released the song back in ’89 only to see its German chart momentum halted along with communism.
In a statement announcing the new music video, Only Murders co-creator, showrunner and EP John Hoffman explains. “When the notion came up in our writers’ room of Charles-Haden Savage, at the height of his success with his original ‘Brazzos’ series, maybe having recorded an album that did really well in Germany before the Berlin Wall fell, we knew we had to talk further about it — immediately!.”

Steve Martin and Only Murders in the Building’s (’90s) summer anthem officially has its own music video.
“Angel in Flip-Flops,” performed by Martin and featured in the Emmy-nominated series, dropped across all digital streaming music platforms Friday. But now Hulu’s released a rather animated music video for the tune, which has its own cover art and was produced by Paul Shaffer and co-written by Martin and Only Murders executive producer Kirker Butler.
The original breezy and beachy song can be heard during the opening of the show’s latest episode, as Martin’s Charles-Haden Savage performs the track — which he recorded in the ’90s for his hit TV crime show Brazzos — in his kitchen.

Castle Rock Entertainment, the Rob Reiner-run production shingle that has been keeping a very low profile for well over a decade, surprised the film world yesterday with the announcement that a sequel to “This Is Spinal Tap” is in the works. The company is self-financing but will bring the package to the Cannes Film Market to secure foreign distribution. Perhaps not coincidentally, Cannes has programmed the 1984 original for its Cinema de la Plage sidebar, in which movies play for free on the beach a few steps from the Palais du Cinéma.
All the key players, including director Reiner, who also appeared in the mock documentary as filmmaker Marty Dibergi (“let’s boogie!”), Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are on board for what will likely follow in the original’s footsteps: a largely-improvised satire of the music industry. (Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.”)
Team Bad’s numbers are dwindling. Hydra said goodbye to the competition during Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer” on Fox.
For the second week in a row, the judges were able to guess who was behind the mask before they were unveiled. This time, guest judge Nicole Byer was the one to successfully deduce that Penn and Teller were the contestants hidden inside the Hydra costume.
Other guesses that were thrown out included Bert and Ernie, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, and Martin Short and Steve Martin. Penn told TheWrap that the latter was quite flattering.
“They’re friends of ours and two of the most talented people on the planet. So we were thrilled to pieces with that guess,” he said, adding that he wasn’t all that surprised the judges were able to figure it out in the end.

Wednesday’s announcement that Charlie Watts would be sitting out the upcoming Rolling Stones tour was jarring; for the first time since 1963, Watts (who is recovering from an unspecified surgical procedure) won’t be behind the drum kit. A little over 17 years since the series finale of Friends aired, the cast is finally reuniting for a special appearing today on HBO Max. But this isn’t like Return to Mayberry or A Very Brady Christmas where he cast appears in character and has a new zany adventure. It’s instead in the style of the recent Fresh Prince of Bel-Air special where everyone returns to the set to share memories, visit with surprise guests, and make a boatload of money promoting the show’s arrival on a new streaming platform.
