Things were going badly on Saturday Night Live‘s 1980-1981 season, even before producer Jean Doumanian realized than the January 10, 1981 episode was headed towards disaster.
The previous season had seen the departure of Lorne Michaels and the entire cast, including founders Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, and Laraine Newman, as well as Bill Murray and Harry Shearer. Doumanian had tried to pitch her incoming group of comedians as the next generation for the hit series, but the performers quickly gained reputations as also-rans. Charlie Rocket was a less funny Chevy Chase, Gail Matthius an off-brand Jane Curtin, and so on.
But on that Jan. 10, 1981 episode, hosted by actor Ray Sharkey, things were going particularly badly. The skits went faster than anticipated and the show had five extra minutes to fill. So in an act of desperation, Doumanian followed the advice of writer Neil Levy and pushed 19-year-old featured player...

The Cincinnati native would go on to produce more than 275 hours of TV movies and miniseries, including “Small Sacrifices,” with Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal, and “The Neon Empire,” starring Ray Sharkey, Martin Landau and Gary Busey. As production VP, first at Screen Gems, then at Columbia, he was involved with such hits as “I Dream of Jeannie,” “Bewitched” and Jack Nicholson’s “Five Easy Pieces.” He then moved to Metromedia and, ultimately, his own banner, producing films like “Cat People” and “Troop Beverly Hills,” the latter based on his wife Ava’s experiences. Fries, whose career spans six decades, was first mentioned in Variety on April 30, 1958, when Murray Seldeen joined Ziv as Fries’ assistant. But Fries was quick to say, “You know, it’s very funny. Al Capone is America’s best known gangster and the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United States during the 1920s Prohibition era. Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities that lent Chicago its reputation as a lawless city and an interesting variety of Hollywood stars have had the leading role as Al Capone in the many films that have been made that featured him as a character.
The first film about Capone was produced when he was still making headlines. The main character may be named Antonio Camonte, but there’s little doubt as to who producer Howard Hughes had in mind when he and director Howard Hawks filmed Scarface during the Great Depression. Camonte shares more than the same initials with one Al Capone, who was about to begin his eleven-year sentence for tax evasion when the movie was released...

A killer book (Dog Soldiers) must hide behind a Credence Clearwater tune. Karel Reisz’s killer movie about the moral residue of Vietnam scores as both drama and action, as disillusioned counterculture smugglers versus corrupt narcotics cops. Just don’t expect it to really have much to say about the Vietnam experience. But hey, the cast is tops — Nick Nolte, Richard Masur, Anthony Zerbe — and the marvelous Tuesday Weld is even better as a pill-soaked involuntary initiate into the pre- War On Drugs smuggling scene.

[Guest authors Christopher Lombardo and Jeff Kirschner of Really Awful Movies share their diagnosis of healthcare horror movies with Daily Dead readers.] When the Us was overhauling its healthcare system, much to-do was made about so-called “death panels,” government committees who would decide who lives and dies based on asset allocation. As far as healthcare horrors are concerned, it turns out that playing God is very real, but luckily only in film and Sarah Palin’s fright-filled imagination. Nefarious nurses, murderous docs, and psychopathic hallway stalkers in horror movies have effectively put end-of-life issues at the forefront, but not in a way that can be reasonably debated: your life, their ending of it.
We’ve decided to weigh in on the healthcare hullabaloo by looking at fictional settings that make One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest look like the height of patient-centered thinking. So sit back and self-medicate with whatever’s in the fridge (or better still, the medicine cabinet) and take these seven healthcare horrors—but don’t call us in the morning.

‘Jersey Boys’ movie review: Great music fails to save Clint Eastwood-directed film version of the 2005 Broadway musical (photo: John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli of the Four Seasons in ‘Jersey Boys’) Clint Eastwood’s semi-historically accurate biopic of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Jersey Boys, is based on the hit 2005 Broadway musical — and it is a crushing bore. But we shall start with the positive: In Eastwood’s film, the music and the performances of the music (which are not the same thing) are great. That is to be expected, as the Jersey Boys movie cast is mostly composed from cast members of the stage show, including Tony winner John Lloyd Young, who happens to look a lot like Frankie Valli and who has a four-plus octave range. Lucky boy. Lloyd Young is also a serviceable actor with a number of (mostly stage) credits that did not require a piercing falsetto.

MGM’s plan to remake the award-winning 1980 musical drama The Idolmaker has so far had a bumpy ride. Ryan Gosling was originally attached to star, as well as intending to make it his directorial debut, but pulled out due to scheduling issues. Now, as Justin Timberlake closes a deal to produce, director Craig Brewer (Hustle And Flow, Footloose) has reportedly thrown his hat in the ring.
The Idolmaker was originally directed by Taylor Hackford (Ray), written by Edward Di Lorenzo (Miami Vice), and starred Ray Sharkey, Peter Gallagher and Joe Pantoliano. Loosely based on the life of Bob Marcucci – the rock promoter and manager responsible for the careers of artists such as Frankie Avalon and Fabian – the story follows songwriter and manager Vincent Vacari through his obsession with finding ‘the next big thing’. After guiding a local band to success and expanding his client list, his obsession becomes a destructive...

Craig Brewer, who directed Hustle & Flow and Footloose, is set to direct MGM’s reboot of The Idolmaker with Justin Timberlake, Hawk Koch and Gene Kirkwood producing.
In the original 1980 film Ray Sharkey starred as a mercenary music promoter who takes on two boys with the intent of turning them into teen idols. The story was based on the life of the life of rock promoter and manager Bob Marcucci, who discovered and promoted Frankie Avalon and Fabian.
According to Variety, the film was “one of the MGM library projects that were put into development in 2011 after the storied studio went through a pre-packaged bankruptcy in late 2010.” The studio began working on reboots like RoboCop and Poltergeist, and now The Idolmaker.
Brewer does have experience directing reboots, as he did with 2011′s Footloose. Now the question is, will Timberlake also star in the film he is producing? What do you think?...

It looked briefly as though Ryan Gosling might make his directorial debut with the re-working of Taylor Hackford’s 1980 music drama The Idolmaker, only for that idea to vanish back into the ether almost as quickly as it arrived. MGM appears to have found a director, one versed in blending music with movies, in Hustle & Flow/Footloose man Craig Brewer. The original film starred Ray Sharkey as a music promoter who stops at nothing to turn his two young talents into big stars. It’s based on the life of Robert Phillip "Bob" Marcucci, who worked his way up to become a personal manager, first at Chancellor Records, then his own Robert P. Marcucci Productions, where he discovered and shepherded the career of such musicians as ‘50s/’60s teen idol Fabian and fellow warbling heartthrob Frankie Avalon. Producers on the project include Gene Kirkwood, Hawk Koch and Justin Timberlake. Sometimes the titles Scream Factory puts out have you saying, “I didn’t see that coming.” Like Friday’s Facebook announcement that 1985's mostly forgotten Hellhole will get a Blu-ray/DVD special edition later this year. Not only have I never seen this one, I totally forgot it even exists.
So what’s Hellhole about again? According to IMDb:
An unlucky woman's mother is murdered by a scarf-wielding killer named Silk, leaving the woman injured, traumatized, and suffering from amnesia. She's committed to a mental institution, where Silk follows her, looking for the papers he was trying to get from her mother. And Silk's only the beginning of her problems since the asylum is run by a mad doctor, performing experiments in chemical lobotomies!
Director Pierre De Moro's exploitation shocker stars the late Ray Sharkey, 80’s babe Judy Landers, 70’s b-movie mainstay Marjoe Gortner, cult cinema icon Mary Woronov,...

Victor Victoria, the adventurously frank, bawdy, and hilarious musical starring Julie Andrews as a poor singer who becomes the toast of Paris when she reinvents herself as gay Polish female impersonator Count Victor Grazinski, turns 30 this year, which officially validates its timelessness. The Blake Edwards-directed romp is equal parts farce and social commentary, and it features unforgettable performances by Robert Preston as Victoria's gay mentor Carroll "Toddy" Todd, James Garner as nightclub owner King Marchard, and perhaps most notably, Lesley Ann Warren as the squeaky, naughty, and hysterical showgirl Norma Cassady. Norma is Judy Holliday on a horny sugar high, and that coquettish insanity earned Warren a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the '82 Oscars.
The most famous projects in Warren's oeuvre are as extreme and unpredictable as Norma herself. As a teenager, Warren played the titular naif in Rodgers and Hammerstein's '65 TV version of Cinderella...

Innocence of Muslims / 'Desert Warrior' director Alan Roberts best-known for '70s soft-core porn The polemical anti-Islam "film" (actually, a cheap, grade Z amateur video), now has not only a producer, but also a director. Besides the now infamous Islamophobic YouTube sensation, which has been blamed for riots in several Muslim countries from Tunisia to Pakistan, Alan Roberts' movie credits include several now long forgotten titles. The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it.s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of The Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as though it.s the year that the headline is from. It.s an unusual concept but the paper is now in its 25th successful year! Steve and I collaborated last Spring on an all-Vincent Price issue of The Globe and I.ve been writing a regular monthly movie-related column since. Since there is no on-line version of The Globe, I post all of my articles here at We Are Movie Geeks. This month’s edition of The Globe takes place in 1947. The headline on the cover will scream “Al Capone Dead!” and there will be several articles about the famous gangster.

Last month, Ryan Gosling was reported to make his directorial debut through a drama film, "The Idolmaker". However, the Canadian actor has recently informed MGM that he will not sit in the director's chair. He will also not star in the forthcoming film.
Deadline says that Gosling will be too busy at the moment. However, once the Dean Pereira of "Blue Valentine" has an empty slot on his schedule and is still interested on the project, he and MGM will revisit the flick down the line.
Gosling has recently wrapped "The Ides of March" with George Clooney. He is currently on pre-production for "Logan's Run" and "The Place Beyond the Pines". In addition to those pics, Gosling also has other high-profile films: "Drive" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love.".

Ryan Gosling is likely to make his directorial debut soon. The "Blue Valentine" star will allegedly helm a remake of 1980's musical drama movie, "The Idolmaker". Deadline reports that the 30-year-old actor will also take a role in the forthcoming project.
While it is the first time for Gosling to sit in the director's chair, he is no stranger to the music scene. He has formed an indie rock band called Dead Man's Bones with his friend Zach Shields in 2008. Their first album was released on October 6, 2009.
Gosling's acting career began when he was a cast member on "The Mickey Mouse Club", along with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. He shot to fame after he starred in 2001's controversial film "The Believer". Gosling is currently at Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of his film "Drive", which will have a limited release in U.S. theaters on September 16.

Considering that he’s one of the more interesting actors of his generation, it was just a matter of time before Ryan Gosling jumped into directing. Deadline says that the Blue Valentine and Drive actor will be making his debut behind the camera with and starring in a remake of The Idolmaker, the 1980 film directed by Taylor Hackford. That movie starred Ray Sharkey as Vincent Vacari (based on Bob Marcucci), a songwriter/manager who’s trying to find the next big performer. In real life, Marcucci went on to discover entertainers such as Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Much like everything else, this was fictionalized in the actual film, and there’s no word yet on if this take will be based more in reality.
The movie will be done for MGM, and similar to how I feel about many actors who take up directing, I have hope. The guy has...

But what Ryan Gosling really wants to do is direct.
The "Blue Valentine" star has officially joined the ever-growing legion of "actors-turned-directors" as he's signed on to make his directorial debut with a remake of the 1980 show business film, "The Idolmaker," according to Deadline.
Gosling will also be joining the even larger legion of "actors who also act in the movies they direct," as he'll also be starring in the film, which is based on the life of rock promoter/producer Bob Marcucci, who discovered Frankie Avalon and Fabian.
The original 1980 film starred Ray Sharkey as a thinly-veiled version of Marcucci named Vincent 'Vinnie' Vacarri and was directed by Taylor Hackford.
"The Idolmaker" has made Gosling's already busy schedule even busier as he's currently in pre-production on several projects, including another remake, "Logan's Run," and "Gangster Squad," a true-crime thriller about the group of L.A. detectives assigned to take down gangster Mickey Cohen.

“Anything worth doing is worth overdoing,” an Alzheimer’s-plagued old man played by legendary writer-director King Vidor tells grandson Ray Sharkey in James Toback’s listless 1982 melodrama Love & Money. That line succinctly summarizes Toback’s entire aesthetic. Since writing Karel Reisz’s 1974 drama The Gambler, Toback has revisited the same set of obsessions (sex, money, race, gambling, fate, art, music, seduction, the conflict between high and low culture, lofty philosophizing, and street-corner tough-guy posturing) incessantly as a writer, director, and documentarian. The results are sometimes electric, like his riveting 1978 directorial debut Fingers, but more often ham-fisted and ...
