As recounted by Gavin Lambert in his biography of Norma Shearer, by the late 1950s and into the 1960s, Miss Shearer had a dread of mental illness overtaking her. Or, as she put it to intimates, a fear "of going Athole's way.".
Spent many years at a mental hospital, where she died in 1985.
