Thompson has entered the race as a Republican, after seeking a seat as an independent in 2020.

I now want to be a ‘Representative’ of the people who live in our California 32nd District to do those things for them even more profoundly, give them a voice, and empower their lives.”

Washington, Aug 24 (Ians) From Vice President Kamala Harris to Ambassador Eric Garcetti, top American leaders congratulated India for the historic touchdown of Chandrayaan-3 on the southern polar region of the moon, calling it an ‘incredible feat’.
“Congratulations to India for the historic landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the southern polar region of the moon,” Indian-American Kamala Harris wrote on X on Thursday as India became the fourth country to achieve the feat after the US, China, and the erstwhile Soviet Union.
“It’s an incredible feat for all the scientists and engineers involved. We are proud to partner with you on this mission and space exploration more broadly,” Harris said.
Last month, India signed the three-year-old Artemis Accords, a US-led international partnership on planetary exploration and research.

Update: Joe Biden spoke for about a half an hour to about 100 guests at a fundraiser in Brentwood on Thursday, covering a range of topics including the state of the fractured media.
“There are no editors anymore,” Biden said, per a pool report. “The ability of newspapers to have much impact is de minimis.”
As he did last week at a fundraiser in New York at the home of James Murdoch, Biden also cited Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use tactical nuclear weapons. He also called Pakistan one of the most dangerous countries in the world as it had “nuclear weapons without any cohesion.”
He predicted that the work of the January 6th Committee would result “in some real change” as a consequence of their work.
Biden also participated in a photo line earlier in the evening for those writing higher-dollar checks.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris jointly endorsed Rep. Karen Bass in her run for Los Angeles mayor today.
“We are endorsing Karen Bass for Los Angeles mayor because we are eager to continue to partner with her on innovative strategies to reduce homelessness and increase public safety and prosperity,” Biden and Harris said in a joint statement released by the Bass campaign. “Karen Bass has our friendship, and she has earned our respect through her leadership in Congress on crime prevention strategies, effective and fair policing, and the welfare of children and families.”
Bass, a Democrat, has been the U.S. representative for California’s 37th congressional district since 2011. The district, covers several areas south and west of downtown Los Angeles. Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.
A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.
Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”
More than 80 people, including 16 Academy Award winners, signed the letter to the Academy, which is posted in full below.

The members of Congress who represent the entertainment industry are trying to make sure the next coronavirus relief package includes aid to freelance workers.
But while there is sympathy for the theater business — which has almost entirely shut down — there appears to be little appetite for an industry-specific bailout package.
Congressional Democrats are seeking to avoid corporate “bailouts” in general, or to attach conditions that would preclude stock buybacks or executive bonuses. Congress is still scarred by the backlash to the financial bailout of a decade ago.
“From my point of view, we ought to put the individuals first and families first,” said Rep. Adam Schiff, “and only look at large industry players, like aircraft manufacturers or airlines, through the prism of what is most beneficial to employees.”
Few sectors have been as ravaged by the economic downturn as the entertainment business, which depends on large groups of people to...

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-mi) made history in November when she became the first Muslim woman to win a seat in Congress. Not long after she and her new colleagues passed a continuing resolution to re-open the government without funding for a border wall, Tlaib on Thursday night spoke at a MoveOn reception for the new Congress near Capitol Hill. She was pretty excited. “People love you and you win, and when your son looks at you and says, ‘Mama, look, you won. Bullies don’t win.’ I said, ‘Baby, they don’t,...

Ten years ago, George W. Bush signed into law the Troubled Asset Relief Program, better known as the Tarp bailout. The rescue forked over $700 billion of taxpayer money to bail out giant Wall Street banks that were already too big, and were about to get bigger.
On Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-vt) and Rep. Brad Sherman (D-ca) introduced new legislation on Tarp’s anniversary. It is aimed at the central, still-unaddressed issue of the last disaster: the ungovernable size of the country’s biggest banks.

A coalition of independent movie theater owners and one member of Congress are calling on Sony Pictures Entertainment to screen The Interview, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The controversial comedy — which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as two journalists enlisted by the CIA to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un — was canceled after a group called Guardians of Peace threatened movie theaters scheduled to screen the film. Calls to screen The Interview despite threats from the hackers who attacked Sony Pictures are growing and now include members of Congress. Representative Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) wrote an open letter to Sony Pictures CEO and co-chairman Michael Lynton that offered the U.S. Capitol building as a screening venue. Sherman hoped the screening would first show that Congress was in support of the freedom of speech but also educate members about issues surrounding The Interview, as he felt "it's important for Congress to know, and see, what we are talking about." Sherman's letter also copied in Chris

Berman vs. Sherman Hollywood’s interest in state politics will be on display in the bitter Democratic battle for the Valley’s new 30th district. For years, U.S. Rep. Howard Berman has been the industry’s go-to guy in the House on economic issues like piracy. Redistricting has thrust Berman into a newly configured district with fellow Dem Brad Sherman. Hollywood’s biggest names — Jeffrey Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and others — have poured major money into his campaign, but Berman will be lucky to pull it out since Sherman’s long representation of most of the district has provided formidable

Betty White is a fan of Rep. Howard Berman's (D-Calif.) "very nice blue eyes."
The former "Golden Girl" praises them -- and Berman's animal-rights record -- with fellow actress Wendie Malick in an ad released Monday.
Berman, who was redistricted into a contentious, expensive race against Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), has a long list of Hollywood supporters, and estimated the industry would account for a fifth of his fundraising.
Berman also picked up a less glitzy endorsement Monday from the Los Angeles Times.

While a decision on whether movie futures contracts based on boxoffice will begin trading still pending before the Commodities Futures Trading Commission, a bipartisan group of 40 congressmen have signed a letter to the House committee that oversees the federal commission "to express significant concern" and "offer our support for efforts to ensure that such futures markets do not become operational."
Among the members of Congress who signed the letter dated June 8 are Howard Berman (D-Calif.), Joe Barton (R-Texas), Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Mary Bono-Mack (R-Calif.), and Dan Maffei (D-n.Y.).
The letter is part of an effort by the MPAA and others opposed to movie futures trading to stop the plans by two companies that want to offer such contracts to institutional and private investors. Backers have said the futures market would be a way for movie companies and others to hedge their bets and protect their investments.

David Rehr has resigned suddenly from the Nab, where he has been president and CEO for the past three-and-a-half years. The 50-year-old chief lobbyist for America's broadcasters will stay on with the organization for the next several weeks or months while a search for a replacement is conducted. Nab's chief operating and financial officer, Janet McGregor, will step up to work with Rehr to handle day-to-day matters from the massive association, sources close to the situation tell Radio and Records.
Rehr's sudden resignation comes less than three weeks after the Nab held its major event of the year, the annual spring convention in Las Vegas, which in good times, would have easily generated nearly $50 million in revenue for Nab. This year's attendance was dramatically lower than in previous years, just under 84,000, the decline blamed on the recession.
