- Ken Loach says in the commentary to the film "The Gamekeeper" that Jackie Shinn was a "pit deputy" as well as a comedian and actor. A "deputy" in the British coal industry was roughly equivalent to a foreman in other industries. The term originally meant a deputy overman, but got shortened to just "deputy" over time.
