Get ready to feel as old, ’90s kids: Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered 20 years ago today.
The beloved series, which cemented Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s place in pop culture history, continues to serve as a favorite among fans with an affinity for high school dramas and regular vampire showdowns.
It’s hard to imagine a TV landscape without the benefit of the show’s landmark run — creator Joss Whedon and Gellar pushed a strong female lead into a world of supernatural creatures, which proved to be successful for ratings and a groundbreaking precedent for future shows.

Fox Broadcasting Co.’s VP casting Seth Yanklewitz has left the network after a five-year stint. I hear the parting of the ways was amicable as Yanklewitz’s contract was up. I hear he was offered a new one and a promotion but opted to pursue other opportunities. Yanklewitz was an independent casting director when he joined Fox in 2011 as part of a reorganization that saw Tess Sanchez rising to Svp and long-time head of casting Marcia Shulman exiting. After mulling a departure for the past few years, Fox's long-time head of casting Marcia Shulman is going ahead with it. After 11 years, she is stepping down as Evp casting to move back to New York. But Shulman is not severing ties with Fox as she will serve as an exclusive casting consultant to the network, advising on key castings and scouting the U.S. and abroad for new talent. Shulman's departure is part of a major restructuring of Fox's casting department. Also leaving are Svp Bob Huber, who is retiring after 19 years at Fox and also relocating to the East Coast as part of a life change, as well as VP Amy Christopher. Meanwhile, Tess Sanchez, a rising star at the network, is set to make the leap from director to Svp and the new head of Fox's casting department beginning June 1. Sanchez, who will report to Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly,...

Fox is still high on Kathryn Hahn, signing a new development/talent holding deal with the former Crossing Jordan co-star. Under the pact, the network is actively developing shows for her, primarily comedies. Fox first signed Hahn in a talent holding deal in 2008. Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly, who ran NBC during the second part of Crossing Jordan's run, was a fan, as was Fox's head of casting Marcia Shulman, who had kept an eye on Hahn since first seeing her at Yale School of Drama's annual showcase for TV executives. That first talent deal with Fox led to Hahn being cast as one of the two leads in the 2009 pilot Ab Fab, an adaptation of the cult British comedy. This past development season, Fox cast Hahn in another comedy pilot, Most Likely to Succeed. "We just didn't want to let her go," said Shulman, who has drawn parallels...

Sorry Heidi — but your 10 plastic surgery procedures in a day have become a “jump the shark” moment for all of Hollywood!
Heidi Montag: your new triple D implant fembot look and immovable collagen and botox filled face, have so horrified top casting, TV and film directors, that a backlash against too much fakery has begun!
“If your face is unproportionately filled with plastic, no one wants to hire a Mr. Potato Head,” says one film casting director.
“All the women look the same: the little noses, the big eyes, the lipo-sucked bodies, the huge breasts. Everyone is looking the same,” adds award winning casting director and independent producer Lauren Lloyd.
And as for Heidi and her ambitions to further her career by “perfecting” herself: “Heidi’s implants won’t help her become an actress — you still have to have talent and drive,” says Lloyd, the founder of Big TV.

Falling out of favor? Fake boobs, Botox, and collagen-injected lips. According to this Sunday Style piece from The New York Times, growing numbers of filmmakers and casting executives want the natural look, and have been forced to look in places like Australia and Britain because too many of Hollywood's actresses have gone under the knife. Fox casting director Marcia Shulman is more blunt, describing the unfortunate end-result of the plastic surgery craze, "I think everyone either looks like a drag queen or a stripper."
This is definitely not good news for Heidi Montag's movie career.

Megan Dodds has inked a talent holding deal with Fox and 20th Century Fox TV to star in an hourlong series project.
The deal stems from Dodds' performance in the Fox/20th TV dramedy pilot "Courtroom K," which impressed executives at the network and studio.
"She just stood out," Fox head of casting Marcia Shulman said of the Juilliard-trained Dodds. "To me, she looks like a classic movie star, a woman from the 1940s. And she is just a terrific actress."
The pact with Dodds comes a week after Fox signed a talent deal with another thirtysomething actress of solid pedigree, Yale School of Drama alum Kathryn Hahn. "It's the year of strong women," Shulman said. "I think women are a great audience for television, and we should be servicing them."

Fox has inked a talent holding deal with Broadway's "Boeing-Boeing" co-star Kathryn Hahn.
Hahn had been on the radar of Fox's head of casting Marcia Shulman since her days at Yale School of Drama, when the actress was a standout at the school's annual showcase for agents and TV executives.
Hahn landed a co-starring role on NBC's "Crossing Jordan" shortly after graduating. For six seasons, she played Lily Lebowski on the crime drama, drawing the attention of Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly, who ran NBC Entertainment for half of the "Jordan" run.
Hahn's deal with Fox marks a rare talent pact as the broadcast networks have been scaling back in the past few years.
"In a time when there is less money for such deals, we're taking really specific shots, and Hahn was one that both Kevin and I wanted to pursue," Shulman said.

Three months ago, Australian actor Josh Lawson came to Los Angeles to take a shot at a Hollywood career.
Now he has scored a talent deal at Fox as well as his first U.S. role as the lead of the network's comedy pilot Spaced.
Lawson was auditioning for small movie parts when he was spotted by Fox talent scouts who brought him in to meet with the network's head of casting Marcia Shulman.
Shulman called the meeting "my little 'American Idol' moment," saying she knew right away she had discovered a great new talent.
"He was really genuinely funny and understood comedy in a very classic way," Shulman said of Lawson, a graduate of Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art who lists Groucho Marx and Buster Keaton among his influences. "He is adorable but brilliantly and surprisingly funny. We all have been describing him as Matthew Perry meets Robin Williams."
Shulman and her team were putting the finishing touches on a talent deal with Lawson when Fox picked up the single-camera comedy pilot Spaced.
Based on the British series of the same name, the project, produced by Warner Bros. TV, Wonderland and Granada America, revolves around two strangers who pose as a married couple in order to rent an apartment.

Landes, who co-starred on David E. Kelley's dramedy The Wedding Bells for Fox and 20th TV, has signed a talent deal with the network and the studio.
Under the pact, 20th TV and Fox will develop a project for him targeted for the 2008-09 season.
"Michael is a great-looking leading man who is equally adept at comedy and drama," Fox executive vp casting Marcia Shulman said. "It was a no-brainer."
Landes, whose series credits include ABC's Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, UPN's Special Unit 2 and BBC's Love Soup, played wedding photographer David Conlon on Bells this past spring.
"He's just a charming, incredibly talented guy who I know is going to be a huge television star," 20th TV senior vp casting Sharon Klein said. "It's just a matter of time and finding him the right project."

Katheryn Winnick has inked a talent holding deal with Fox Broadcasting Co.
Under the mid-six-figure deal, which runs through May 2008, Winnick will be cast in a new drama series project for the network.
Fox originally cast Winnick in the one-hour pilot "13 Graves" last year, and in January, she guest-starred in the highly rated episode "One Day, One Room" of Fox's hit medical drama "House".
"She stood out in it", Fox executive vp casting Marcia Shulman said. "We were tracking her, and after she did that 'House' episode, we knew we wanted to stay in business with her."
This pilot season, Winnick was cast as the lead in Fox's one-hour pilot "Nurses". The role was recently recast after the character was taken in a different, more comedic direction.
On the big screen, Winnick next appears in New Line Cinema's "Amusement" and the indie "When Nietzsche Wept".
She is repped by UTA, manager Marc Shumacher and attorney Jeff Bernstein.

As the pilot casting season is picking up speed, the network also has lined up Jay Baruchel, Ben Feldman and Kristin Lehman with talent deals. All four are expected to star in Fox pilots targeted for fall. "These are actors that I think have a Fox kind of feel," Fox executive vp casting Marcia Shulman said. "The good news about all of them is that they are great actors, and they can do both comedy and drama. Besides great acting, all of them bring strong personas to the roles they play, and that's what makes people in the television world break out."...

In Doe, Purcell played an uber-genius amnesiac who knew everything -- except for his own identity. The series, which lasted a full season Friday nights on Fox in 2002-03, was executive produced by Brandon Camp, Mimi Leder and Mike Thompson out of Regency TV. Purcell's film credits include Mission: Impossible 2, Equilibrium and the upcoming Blade: Trinity. Purcell is repped by Endeavor and Untitled Entertainment.
