The Us Supreme Court has declined to intervene in the lawsuit between Warner Bros/DC Comics and the heirs of Superman co-creator Joe Shuster.
The decision to deny the petition has effectively ended the long and bitter battle over the rights to the iconic DC superhero (via Robot 6).
The 2013 ruling by the Ninth Circuit Court that Shuster's nephew Mark Peavy cannot reclaim the artist's stake in the Superman rights due to a 1992 agreement with DC stands.
The agreement - which included various benefits and a $25,000 annual pension for Shuster's sister Jean Peavy and brother Frank Shuster - was judged to invalidate a 2003 copyright-termination notice filed by Mark Peavy.
Another long-running case between Marvel Comics and the estate of Jack Kirby recently settled out of court after petitions to have it taken before the Supreme Court.

The battle for the rights to Superman might not be fully done just yet...

The battle between the heirs to Superman and Warner Bros has not been a particularly pleasant one, and it's perhaps of little surprise that Warner Bros ultimately prevailed, unlocking its plans for Man Of Steel, Justice League and the now-filming Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice in the process.
However, it seems as though the heirs to one of Superman's creators, Joe Shuster, are attempting again to win the rights back. As Law360 reports, the Shuster heirs have asked that the Us Supreme Court overturn a Ninth Circuit court ruling that Jean Peavy and Frank Shuster - Joe Shuster's children - waived their rights to Superman back in 1992.
The latest chapter in the case is centered on an argument that at the point those rights were supposed to have been waived (in exchange...

The heirs of Superman co-creator Joe Shuster are seeking to bring their legal battle to the Supreme Court.
They have delivered a petition to the Us judicial body asking that a ruling in favour of Warner Bros/DC Entertainment be overturned, reports Law360.
They maintain their argument that sister Jean Peavy and brother Frank Shuster were not in the legal position to turn over the rights to the Man of Steel to the publisher in 1992.
The Ninth Circuit Court previously rejected the same appeal, declaring that Shuster's siblings gave up the family's right to terminate the copyright on the legendary superhero in return for a payout of $600,000 and an annual salary of $25,000 each.
"The court of appeals' decisions cast a pall over the ownership of billions of dollars in copyrights," reads the petition.
"Other grantees, inspired by the rulings of the courts of appeals, will no doubt opt to litigate...
