Disney+ Acquires Neal Shusterman Novel ‘Challenger Deep’ With ‘Toy Story 4’s Will McCormack Adapting
Exclusive: Disney + has acquired the National Book Award-winning Neal Shusterman novel Challenger Deep. The streaming division of Disney has set Toy Story 4 scribe Will McCormack to write the script.
The book gracefully covers mental illness. Caden Bosch lives in two worlds; one is a life with family, friends and high school. It’s all good, but he’s paranoid for no reason, thinks people are trying to kill him, and demonstrates obsessive compulsive behaviors. In his other world, he’s part of the crew for a pirate captain on a voyage to the Challenger Deep, the ocean’s deepest trench. There is a captain and his mutinous parrot, and mutterings of his fellow shipmates as they sail uncharted waters toward unknown dangers, with Caden unable to understand. The author based the book on his own son’s schizoaffective disorder.

For years, he's brought the dead to life in books like Patient Zero and Rot & Ruin, so it's rather fitting that prolific author Jonathan Maberry has now teamed up with the legendary George A. Romero to co-edit an anthology set within the early stages of the zombie uprising in Night of the Living Dead. Titled Nights of the Living Dead, the new anthology is now available from St. Martin's Press (check out our giveaway here), and to celebrate, we caught up with Maberry for our latest Q&A feature to discuss his work on the living dead dream project, and we also have a claustrophobic excerpt from his short story "Lone Gunman."
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Jonathan. How did the opportunity come about to collaborate on a Night of the Living Dead anthology with the legend himself, George A. Romero?

"Rules of Attraction" and "Killing Zoe" director Roger Avary is set to helm "Unwind" for Voltage Pictures and Constantin Film.
Based on Neal Shusterman's award-winning novel, the story imagines a cruel dystopian world in which those over eighteen years of age, either function as a cog in the machine of a brainwashed society, or get 'unwound' - your body is taken apart, piece by piece, and given to those the government determines to be more suitable.
Connor (Ian Nelson), Risa (Kiernan Shipka), and Lev (Percy Hynes White) are three young people raging against the machine. Their desire for freedom and self-determination is greater than their fear of unwinding.
Bill Paxton and Jay Baruchel also star in the film while Avery and his daughter Gala Avary wrote the screenplay. Don Carmody, Robert Kulzer, Roger Avary, Julian Stone and Marc Benardout will produce.

Disney Channel has found the Schwa.
A network spokesperson confirmed that the channel has an option on Neal Shusterman's book The Schwa Was Here. The author is writing the script for the telefilm project.
The book, published in 2004 by Dutton Juvenile, is narrated by an eighth-grader named Antsy Bonano who tells the story of a classmate, Calvin Schwa, who tends to go through life completely unnoticed and unseen, to the point of being "invisible."
Shusterman's relationship with Disney Channel extends back to the 2004 movie Pixel Perfect, one of the network's highest-rated telefilms of that year.
