The Princess and the Frog is out on Friday and will be Disney’s first hand drawn animation since 2004’s Home on the Range. But it doesn’t sound like we’ll have to wait another five years for the next one, because Disney have a trio of similar projects in the works.
Watch this -
So that’s Winnie the Pooh, The Snow Queen and a mystery project from Princess and the Frog directors Ron Clements and John Musker. Here’s some concept art by Harald Sieperman which may or may not be representative of what the Snow Queen will end up looking like.
While Disney has been turning its back on the form of animation that made its name, some excellent hand drawn films have emerged elsewhere. One of my favourite films of last year was the French animation Persepolis based on the graphic novel of the same name.

Brendon Connelly over at SlashFilm (via Fs.Net)- got a small update on another new hand-drawn Disney project called The Snow Queen. It’s apparently an old project that fell apart a few years back and has been dusted off again recently.
As many of you know The Princess and the Frog is part of a new mantra from the folks at Disney to release a hand-drawn animated film every 2 year keeping in with the tradition and work that built Disney to where it is today.
The Princess and the Frog is already out in theaters and is set to expand nationwide this weekend. I have not seen it yet but have heard the critics love it. What’s even cooler is the musical mastermind behind the score and songs of Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid – Alan Menken is already scoring the project.

With The Princess and the Frog’s imminent release, Disney has committed to keeping alive hand-drawn films, releasing one every couple of years in order to stand beside their CG efforts. Slash Film went to Disney’s studio in Burbank and spoke with producer Peter del Vecho about their future hand-drawn projects, one of which he revealed as The Snow Queen, a movie that has been in development for years but has not actually been committed to until now. The story is based on a classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson, following the traditional Disney trend. With Winnie the Pooh still in development for something like a 2011 release, presumably The Snow Queen will be pushed back beyond that. Artwork for The Snow Queen can be seen below. Its illustrator is Harald Sieperman, who had originally confirmed that the film had been canceled. It appears that somewhere along the way...
