Poland’s New Horizons Film Festival in Transition: The Place of the Outsider and of the Church TodayPoland itself is in transition. With the new government — Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party is deeply authoritarian — and its swing to the populist right, the Polish Film Institut seems to be veering right as well, toward more commercIal fims including the invariable war epics to show national pride. And Poland is getting competitive for bringing in international coproductions by offering a 30% tax cash back rebate for qualifying productions out of an overall fund of €46 million ($53.8 million).Polish Works in Progress is a key component of the industry events at the Festivals
Tomasz Dabrowski of Film Commission Poland likened the rebates bill to “a Copernican revolution for the Polish film industry….Poland will finally find its well-deserved place among the other European film industries.”

"Melancholia" is the film to beat at this year's European Film Awards, which announced its nominated films Saturday at the Seville European Film Festival. The Lars von Trier film leads the pack with eight nominations including best film, best director, two best actress nods for Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg and best screenwriter. Following "Melancholia" -- all with half the number of noms it earned -- are Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech," Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist," Aki Kaurismaki's "Le Havre," Susanne Bier's "In a Better World" and Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne's "The Kid with a Bike." "The King's Speech" and "In a Better World" won best picture and best foreign film, respectively, at the Academy Awards this year.
Whether "Melancholia" will get as much love outside of Europe remains to be seen, when it opens in the U.S. in limited release on Nov. 11. The film,...

"Lars von Trier's Melancholia led the 24th European Film Award nominations, which were announced this morning," reports indieWIRE's Peter Knegt. "The film took 8 nominations including best film, director, screenplay and a double nominations for best actress with Kirsten Dunst [who, of course, won Best Actress in Cannes] and Charlotte Gainsbourg." Peruse the full list below and note that the list of nominees for European Film 2011 is identical to the one for European Director 2011 — except that Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) has been switched out for Béla Tarr, whose The Turin Horse also scores nominations for cinematographer Fred Kelemen and composer Mihály Vig.

(Rob’s Venice review re-posted as film is released in the U.K. this week)
Three American contractors walk through the Afghanistan desert. They’re healthy-looking, tanned and wearing sunglasses. They engage in light-hearted banter as they investigate a system of caves, backed up by helicopter support. It could be an episode of Generation Kill, or The Hurt Locker. The camera is objective, even detached. Then we cut to a disorientated, breathless, first-person view of a man running. He’s running to avoid the soldiers we have seen. Soon, we are taken back to the soldiers: still laid back and cool. It is clear that, to them, this hunt is routine: a job. For the other guy it is survival, and killing is an essential part of life.
Alerted to his presence by a sudden noise, the Americans pursue the man into a small cave cut into the desert rock.

Or should I say, Now with Less Dick? Either way, the Essential Killing trailer looks a heck of a lot better than anything else Vincent Gallo has ever done--and so it must be, as his completely wordless performance as a suspected terrorist won the Best Actor award at the 2010 Venice Film Festival. Writer/Director Jerzy Skolimowski's (Four Nights with Anna) breathless tale of a man on the lam also won the Special Jury Prize after Quentin Tarantino (Jury President) asked for the Festival's rules to be broken so that two major awards could be given to one film; Essential Killing went on to win many international awards. But, what can be more powerful than awards is a trailer's ability to get people interested in seeing a film and this clip, with its gorgeous cinematography and palpable tension does the job well.
