Journalism groups and media organizations are launching a new campaign called “Protect Press Freedom,” including a one-minute spot that will air on networks and broadcast stations. Watch it above.
“Today, there are real threats to press freedom, and your right to know the world around us,” a narrator says in the spot. “Some threats are obvious, some are easy to miss, but they all put our way of life at risk.”
The campaign is spearheaded by the Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press and the Committee to Protect Journalists, along with Free Press, Internews, Media Law Resource Center, Pen America, Reporters Without Borders and the Society of Professional Journalists. They are partnering with 30 media and technology firms and other nonprofits.
What the spot does not do is call out specific figures who have targeted the media, like President Donald Trump, who attacks “fake news” and has referred to...

Employees of the Committee to Protect Journalists have decided that they need union protection themselves. More than 90% of the 30-member staff have signed union cards asking to be represented by the WGA East, and Cpj’s management has agreed voluntarily to recognize the guild as their staff’s collective bargaining representative.
“We are honored to represent people who devote their professional lives to protecting journalists, to telling the stories of journalists who do important and difficult work in perilous times,” said Lowell Peterson, the guild’s executive director. “We look forward to continuing our strong, productive relationship with Cpj.”
Said Cpj executive director Joel Simon. “The Cpj staff is tremendously effective, and as leaders of this organization we are proud of the work they do to advance press freedom and defend the rights of journalists. We look forward to working with the union to make Cpj the best possible place to work.

CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour called out the dangers of powerful leaders using “fake news” as a weapon against journalists “who go toward danger” to challenge despots and others.
Amanpour cited the shocking statistic that “deliberate targeting is the leading cause of death for journalists” as she was feted Friday at Variety’s Power of Women NY presented by Lifetime. She noted that the anti-press attitudes found in developing nations are spreading.
“Increasingly we are in a war from within our own democratic societies where we are bludgeoned over the head day after day by this untruthful trope of fake news. It is very, very difficult to keep going,” Amanpour said.
She also urged the crowd to support journalists who do the hard work of digging for truth. At a time of extreme polarization in the country, it’s more important than ever to do the shoe-leather work of reporting.

In a time when the term “fake news” is being thrown around and the United States has been added to the list of one of the most dangerous countries to be a journalist, it’s nice to know that there is one silver lining: this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square will be dedicated to the freedom of press.
Joel Simon, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, will initiate the ball drop on Monday in Times Square while yet-to-be-named journalists from various U.S. and international outlets will be the guests of honor at the party in one of the most iconic party spots for New Year’s Eve.
This news comes after a tough year for journalists when it comes to the backlash, wild scrutiny, and the Trump administration. There are two journalist attacks in particular that influenced organizers to dedicate the Times...

In addition to The Condemned and The Marine, he produced See No Evil as vehicles for WWE superstars. Prior to that, he was partnered for nearly a decade with producer Bill Todman Jr in Todman/Simon Productions, which had a first-look deal with Lorimar and Warner Bros Pictures, and whose feature releases included Married to the Mob and Hard to Kill. Well, music business, we tip our hats off to you on this one. "Not many people know this, but I spent my childhood and early-twenties studying and performing as a musician," Simon says. "Music has been a huge part of my life, and although I never thought of myself as a singer, I was thrilled and a little nervous when Joel Simon and Jsm approached me with idea of creating a song.

NEW YORK -- Michael Lake is replacing Joel Simon as president of World Wrestling Entertainment's film division, which has been struggling at the boxoffice.
A spokesman for the sports entertainment powerhouse said Thursday that WWE has hired Lake for a two-year contract.
Lake will develop theatrical features and direct-to-video products as vehicles for WWE Superstars. He says he plans to ramp up production on WWE Films' straight-to-video slate, aiming to produce around three to four films annually along with a theatrical tentpole feature. He will also develop new TV projects that would benefit from an affiliation with WWE or its talent.
He most recently served as executive producer on one of three WWE films the company has produced in the last five years, The Condemned, starring wrestling star "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. The movie struggled at the boxoffice but has done solid home-video business in recent weeks.
The exec, a veteran of Village Roadshow Pictures, has overseen production work on such Hollywood hits as the Matrix trilogy, Miss Congeniality and Ocean's Eleven.
"Joel is leaving to pursue a career as an independent producer," a WWE spokesman said of Simon's departure.

WWE Films has acquired an untitled horror movie pitch from writer Dan Madigan with plans to develop it as a starring vehicle for one of the organization's most popular wrestlers. Specific details of the project are being kept under wraps, but it has been described as a very intense, very violent horror movie in which a great deal of the horror comes out of the film's unique setting. The lead character is a remorseless, relentless, vicious and sadistic monster cut from the same cloth as such horror franchise icons as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. The project is being produced by WWE Films' Joel Simon and Jed Blaugrund. There is no studio attached to the project yet, with WWE purchasing the pitch with its own money. It is unclear yet whether WWE will partner with a studio on the film or finance the project itself. Madigan is repped by ICM and Mason Novick of Benderspink.

Hoping to fill Hollywood's current action-hero void, World Wrestling Entertainment star Triple H has signed on to a pair of high-profile roles. He will topline Jornada del Muerte, a modern-day Western from Apocalypse Now scribe John Milius, and will battle Wesley Snipes in New Line Cinema's Blade: Trinity. Jornada del Muerte (Journey of Death) will be the first theatrical release from the recently formed WWE Films production banner. The project, which Milius said was written specifically for Triple H (whose real name is Michael Paul LeVesque) to star in, is described as a modern-day Western set in the Southwest that involves motorcycle gangs, drug trafficking and broken codes of honor. Jornada is being produced by WWE Films' Vince McMahon and Joel Simon along with Alfred Sapsy and Patrick Hughes.

NEW YORK -- WWE Films has smacked down a high-six-figure sum for an untitled action pitch by Spawn screenwriter Alan McElroy. The pitch is being developed as one of the first features for World Wrestling Entertainment's Los Angeles-based film division, which is headed by president Joel Simon. WWE brass was keeping a tight choke hold on the pitch's plot, except to describe it as "high-concept." McElroy will pen the original screenplay, with Simon shepherding the project, along with WWE Films vp Jed Blaugrund. McElroy's previous credits also include last year's Warner Bros. release Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever and 20th Century Fox's current horror rollout Wrong Turn. "WWE Films is here to extend the WWE brand into mainstream Hollywood movies and television shows, and this story does that perfectly," Simon said. McElroy is repped by Hohman Maybank Lieb.
World Wrestling Entertainment has launched its own film company in Los Angeles to boost the movie careers of its stars. WWE Films will cast wrestling superstars in 'prominent' movie roles. The move follows The Rock's successful crossover into movies, with starring roles in The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King. The new division will focus on developing WWE film and television projects to add to the brand's TV and live wrestling events. WWE Films president Joel Simon says, "WWE is a powerful brand that is an untapped creative resource for Hollywood. "I believe that WWE has created a new breed of action-adventure hero, one with a ready-made audience. WWE attracts a strong, youth-oriented audience, the type of moviegoers and viewers who can financially make or break a film."...
