In 2020, audiences would watch a global disaster unfold in front of their eyes, and ironically, that year would also bring us the disaster movie Greenland. Ric Roman Waugh’s thriller starred Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin and follows a family’s struggle to get to emergency proceedings as they’re selected for shelter from the impending doom of a comet hurling toward our planet. Unlike most disaster films, this story was told from the perspective of everyday citizens simply trying to evade the crazy panic of the population in order to seek refuge. Talks of a sequel have been going on for a while and Deadline now reports that Greenland: Migration is set to film this April with the cast returning along with Ric Roman Waugh and screenwriter Chris Sparling. Sparling co-writes this entry with Mitchell Lafortune. The plot, according to Deadline, reads, “The Garrity family must leave the safety...

With a light-hearted, feel-good lineup of programming that includes The Spencer Sisters and Sullivan’s Crossing on the schedule for fall, the addition of dating show FBoy Island to the CW’s 2023-2024 schedule feels more than just a little incongruous.
But CW programming chief Brad Schwartz told reporters Thursday that it would have been silly not to pick up HBO Max’s castoff because of its “big loud title” and built-in audience. New episodes of the show plus reruns of the dating show will air on CW Thursdays this fall.
“When they [HBO Max] canceled their entire unscripted slate, there was the biggest show just sitting there,” Schwartz told reporters. “It had two seasons of audience that just love the show. It was opportunistic. It’s such a broadcast show. The show is The Bachelor. The show is Love Island. It’s a little bolder, we know there is an audience there for it.

HBO Max chose not to renew the reality dating series FBoy Island after two seasons. However, the show’s been rescued by The CW and will return for season three this fall.
Series host Nikki Glaser predicted the series’ return in a December 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“It was a huge success; season 2 more than season 1. And we can’t wait to make another, but we have no word yet,” stated Glaser. “But I’m really confident that there will be more. I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life when it comes to a show being picked up again. And I’ve had many of my TV shows canceled and not return, but I have no worries that this one will either be back on HBO or find a place somewhere else,...

It’s somewhat hard to believe, but Adam Sandler — the guest on this edition of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in late 2022 in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where Sandler received the fest’s performance of the year award — has been a star for more than 30 years now.
Hired as a writer on Saturday Night Live in 1990, the Brooklyn-born comedian soon began appearing in his own sketches and won over audiences with his madcap man-child characters. He then transitioned to a film career, co-writing and starring in movies about lovable losers who win the day, like 1995’s Billy Madison, 1996’s Happy Gilmore and 1998’s The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy.
While Sandler, now 56, has continued to consistently pump out unabashedly goofy comedies to which audiences have flocked, he has also, with increasing frequency, taken aback critics by deploying serious acting...

A consortium of investors led by Najafi Companies has closed its deal to purchase STX Entertainment, the beleaguered film and television company behind “Bad Moms” and “My Spy.” The sale ends STX’s unhappy union with Eros, the Indian media company that it merged with in 2020. The goal was to go public, which STXEros did, but to little investor fanfare. STX had previously tried and abandoned an effort to go public on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2018, citing unfavorable market conditions.
The cash-strapped independent studio had attracted some 11th-hour interest from Lionsgate, but a potential deal collapsed, leaving Najafi Companies, a Phoenix-based private-equity firm run by Jahm Najafi, as the victor. Najafi is the vice chairman of the Phoenix Suns. Investment firms As Birch Grove LP and 777 Partners helped finance the deal for STX. In December the group bid 173 million for the company.

STX Entertainment will remain an independent film studio as the private investment firm The Najafi Companies has now closed the deal to acquire Robert Simonds’ studio from Eros International, the companies announced Friday.
Simonds will serve as STX chairman and Noah Fogelson, currently the president, will become the new CEO.
Adam Fogelson will continue to serve as chairman of the Motion Picture Group, Andrew Warren will continue as CFO, and John Friedberg will continue overseeing the international and acquisitions divisions for the motion picture group out of the company’s London office.
The studio behind “Bad Moms,” “Hustlers” and “Greenland” was sold to The Najafi Companies last December in a 173 million deal. However, it included a 45-day “go-shop” period in which Lionsgate explored a last minute acquisition of its own of STX. As previously reported by TheWrap, that deal fell through with an offer that was said to be below the 173 million offered by Najafi.

Exclusive: There’s been a lot of biting rumors around STX Entertainment during the past four months, from a potential sale to Lionsgate to possibly filing Chapter 11. These are not coming to realization as the Hustlers and Bad Moms studio now can breathe a sigh of relief, having fully closed its sale to The Najafi Companies, with Birch Grove LP and 777 Partners now also providing financing.
The Forest Road Company originally was part of the Najafi consortium in taking over STX’s debt, but it no longer is part of the revived studio going forward.
All of this puts STX Entertainment in a position to remain independent, now completely separated from Eros International, which we’ve heard has had its own financial baggage, further complicating affairs for the Burbank studio. All of this is good for the greater independent film ecosphere as STX won’t be a theatrical distributor to...

Lionsgate will not be acquiring STX Entertainment, leaving the cash-strapped indie studio to close its deal with The Najafi Companies or find financing to cover its outstanding $150 million debt, TheWrap has learned. Lionsgate submitted a best and final offer in recent days that was well under the $173 million offered late last year by The Najafi Companies, an individual close to the negotiations told TheWrap, adding that the bid was rejected by STX founder Robert Simonds and his top executives. That leaves the Phoenix-based Najafi — in partnership with Tom Staggs and Kevin Mayer’s Forest Road Spac — to close an acquisition that was announced in December. That deal allowed a 45-day window in which Lionsgate explored making its own bid for the studio behind modest box office hits like “Hustlers,” “Bad Moms” and “Greenland.” STX must also continue negotiating with its primary lender, Jp Morgan, to extend terms that were supposed to be due in February.

STX Films has released the trailer for its upcoming action thriller “The Contractor,” starring Chris Pine. The film will be released in theaters and digitally on April 1.
After special forces sergeant James Harper (Pine) is involuntarily discharged from the army, he contracts with an underground military operation and finds himself entangled in a dangerous conspiracy that leaves him fighting for his life. The trailer shows Pine jumping off a bridge, dodging bullets and escaping explosions, with no shortage of fist fights in the mix.
“It’s easy to kill,” one man says in the trailer, “but it’s much harder to survive.”
The film also stars Kiefer Sutherland (“Melancholia”), Ben Foster (“The Messenger”), Gillian Jacobs (“Community”), Eddie Marsan (“Happy-Go-Lucky”) Jd Pardo (“Mayans M.C.”) and Florian Munteanu (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”). “The Contractor” marks the English language film debut for Swedish director Tarik Saleh (“Westworld”), and...
