The rise of social media has seen a rise in the number of so-called scoopers sharing inside information. Many of them have no more credibility than your average Reddit commenter, but then there are those with a solid track record.
@MyTimeToShineH (mostly) falls into the latter category, and whether you want to put that down to lucky guesses or legit sources, they've dropped more hits than misses in recent years.
This latest claim, though, is one we're struggling to believe. Then again, stranger things have happened!
Apparently, Black Adam star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is on Marvel Studios' radar to play En Sabah Nur, a.k.a. Apocalypse. We'd assume this is for the upcoming X-Men reboot, though it's possible he'd play a Variant of the villain in one of the upcoming Avengers movies seeing as many of the original X-Men are expected to appear.

“You’ve been making women feel bad about themselves since you were invented,” the hip teen Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) tells the stereotypical Barbie standing before her. “You represent everything wrong with our culture: sexualized capitalism, unrealistic physical ideals.” Stereotypical Barbie is horrified: “No, no, no, you’re describing something stereotypical,” she insists.
Margot Robbie spent much of Barbie proving why the doll she portrayed wasn’t the sexist object that girls like Sasha see. The Aussie actor has a much more difficult task ahead of her if she’s going to do the same thing in her upcoming project Avengelyne. Everything about Avengelyne screams mindless sex and violence—which is why Robbie is the perfect choice. Hold on, let us explain…

Every couple of months in comic book-centric social media circles, someone reposts a comics page in which Deadpool shooting Spider-Man in the head or decapitating an exhausted Bruce Banner. These panels usually spark arguments about whether or not these kills are in character (they aren’t) or if the entire thing is a joke (it is).
Eventually, someone points out that the pages come from Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, a 2012-2013 miniseries by Cullen Bunn and Dalibor Talajic. The story involves Deadpool’s fourth-wall-breaking powers driving him so mad that he decides to kill all the other Marvel characters because they’re fictional and their lives don’t matter. Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe may have inspired controversy, but it also inspired several sequels, including Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again.
From all that we’ve seen so far, Deadpool & Wolverine seems to have little in common with Bunn and Talajic’s take.

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
Life has never been easy for the X-Men, or any mutant in the Marvel Universe. They’re feared and hated, oppressed just for being alive. They’re betrayed time and again, even by heroes who call themselves their friends.
But in the history of the X-Men, there are three stories that stand out as particularly heartbreaking: Mutant Massacre, E is for Extinction, and Fall of X. And the latest episode of X-Men ’97 just combined them all into one shocking half-hour full of deaths.
“Remember It” begins as a love letter to all things X-Men, as Magneto, Rogue, and Gambit head to the island nation of Genosha. Once the home of an oppressive human regime (modeled in the original comics after Apartheid South Africa), Genosha has become a home for mutants, a sovereign nation under mutant rule. Director Emi Yonemura and series creator Beau De Mayo...

“They shall know my Inferno!” cries the Goblin Queen early in X-Men ’97‘s third episode. Now, the Goblin Queen has had a rough day, which began with her thinking that she was the real Jean Grey and ended with the revelation that she was a clone created by evil (but fashionable) geneticist Mr. Sinister. Her heel turn came so quick that she really didn’t have time to workshop her villain monologues.
Whatever the shortcomings in her baddie banter, the Goblin Queen makes up for it with evil powers. She immediately begins transforming the X-Mansion into a Hellscape, complete with a giant head in an elevator and a vision of Xavier as a monster from the anime classic Akira. Wild as these transformations are, they have nothing on the comic book storyline that inspired it.

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" to follow.
"X-Men '97" episode 2, "Mutant Liberation Begins," ended with a shocking cliffhanger; a Jean Grey duplicate showed up at the door of the X-Mansion, shocking the X-Men — including the other Jean, who had only just given birth to her and Scott's son Nathan. Episode 3, "Fire Made Flesh," picks up here.
If I can brag for a moment, I called this twist from the trailer (alongside some other Marvel Comics Easter eggs). The Jean (re)introduced at the beginning of "X-Men '97" is a clone, created by Mister Sinister, while he held the original captive (Beast confirms which Jean is the original by dating the pair's cells to determine which is older).
Sinister has long wanted to combine Cyclops and Jean's DNA to create the ultimate mutant; Nathan is that experiment come to fruition. So, he confronts his "daughter" (who's feeling susceptible after her entire life...

If you're an "X-Men" fan, you should be listening to the "Cerebro" podcast. The host, literary agent/"X-Men" historian Connor Goldsmith, and a guest (usually an "X-Men" writer or fan of some repute) discuss a chosen character — both their history and why they resonate.
The 101st episode of "Cerebro" (released May 2023) featured comic writer Jonathan Hickman, who relaunched the X-Men comics alongside artist Pepe Larraz in 2019 with intersecting miniseries "House of X" & "Powers of X" (the latter pronounced like the number 10). For the episode, they discuss En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse, the most infamous X-Men antagonist not named Magneto.
Writer Louise Simonson and artist Jackson "Butch" Guice created Apocalypse in 1986 as the shadowy villain for their book "X-Factor." He was revealed to be an immortal mutant, possibly the very first one. Born in Ancient Egypt, Apocalypse has shaped the curve of history to Herbert Spencer's survival of the fittest ethos.

Up Front & Letters
Dak uses some of the Up Front space in this issue to publish more letters. It’s all to do with this being the end of Ci’s first year and everyone involved is in a mood to celebrate. The letters are basically singing the praises of a job well done and it showcases how well it is selling across the country. There is nothing to write home about in Up Front. Only more of Dak highlighting a good year and rightfully so. He points out how most of not all of the comics featured in Ci have been hits with the fans. On a personal level, #6 of Comics Interview was a big deal because of fans wanting to know about the fallout from the Jla/Avengers incident. East Coast distribution sold out completely. All the good stuff is in the usual letters pages at the back.

A teenage girl excuses herself from a family activity in the living room. When she gets to the bathroom, she discovers that she has begun puberty, a confusing and frightening situation for anyone. But matters get worse when the girl realizes she can control her blood, making it fly and move in the air.
When her loving mother, concerned that she’s experiencing the normal bodily changes of a young woman, knocks on the door, the girl freaks out. She sends a glob of blood at her mother, slicing her throat. When her father rushes in and asks what happened, the girl panics again and uses blood to kill her father. The scene ends with the girl huddled in the corner, terrified of what she’s become.

Rob Liefeld, creator of the comic book character “Deadpool,” has debuted a proof of concept trailer for a film called “Bloodstrike,” directed by stunt coordinator Philip J. Silvera.
In a detailed Instagram caption, Liefeld revealed the vision for his new project and how the trailer came to be. He began by relaying the difficulties involved in bringing a movie to the big screen.
“When taking a comic book from page to screen there are always hurdles, screenplay, screenwriters, talent that attach and move on. It gets old really fast,” he wrote.
Liefeld and Silvera, who worked on “Deadpool” and other Marvel films, shared an artistic synergy.
“I have waited to connect with a director with the same zeal for the material, someone who can nurture it to the finish line, be a true partner in the process,” Liefeld wrote. “I met Phil Silvera on the first Deadpool film. He had...

Superman’s incredible 85-year history is defined with intricate detail and unique understanding by those who’ve known him best – the authors, artists, filmmakers, actors and experts tasked with propagating his legend through every medium – in the latest Edward Gross omnibus, Voices From Krypton, published by Nacelle Books. The hardcover book is now available via Amazon, online retailers and popular bookshops, with an e-book edition also available.
Hailed as the most comprehensive examination of Superman in history, Voices From Krypton begins in the mid 1930s with the character’s creation by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and concludes with the announcement of the next big screen adventure, Superman: Legacy. Topics range from Superman’s appearances in different mediums to the individual actors who’ve played the character, from Superman’s Silver Age to present day iterations, and from the subtleties of capturing the Man of Steel to the tentpole moments of his past 85+ years.

Working on an animated project for Warner Bros. Discovery has become a game of chicken with CEO David Zaslav in charge, as every week seems to bring about another round of shows that are either scrubbed from streaming platforms, or are outright cancelled during production. At this point, it can be difficult to keep up with a project that's actually going to get released. Thankfully, it appears that an upcoming DC animated series for Cartoon Network has avoided the chopping block, at least for now.
First announced in 2021, series creator Jake Wyatt's "My Adventures with Superman" will see "The Boys" star Jack Quaid voicing the titular superhero, while Alice Lee will play Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. While larger plot details are being kept under wraps, the synopsis indicates that it will show Superman through a youthful lens, while staying true to the character's roots:

It’s hard to explain now, thirty years on, just what a huge event The Death of Superman was. It grew far beyond anything DC Comics could have imagined. It all started with that same old thing in comics, falling sales on the Superman books. There was nothing wrong with the stories or creative teams, they were all very good. I should know because I have practically every issue after all. The problem was with culture. Punisher was big, Ghost Rider was big, Wolverine was big, Batman was getting darker and darker. Superman was just out of step with tastes. So, to get a bit of publicity, then Editor Mike Carlin and his creative teams decided to kill Superman (temporarily of course).

The death of Superman continues to loom large over the DC Universe, just as the actual, legendary tale, “The Death of Superman,” looms large over popular culture. It shouldn’t be surprising that one of the most creatively abundant periods in Superman history yielded one story that continues to cast such a long shadow, and yet “The Death of Superman” has become, second only to the Man of Steel’s origin story, perhaps the best known tale in the character’s history.
It’s more than just the story itself. “The Death of Superman” was a media event at a time when comics weren’t necessarily getting mainstream attention. Radio, TV, and traditional print media seized on the opportunity, and casual fans unaware that nobody stays dead in the world of superheroes, genuinely thought DC was bringing the career of its longest-running hero to a close. Since then, the story has been adapted for animation,...

This post contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ms. Marvel.
At first glance, X-Men ’97 seems like something that only ’90s kids will understand. The upcoming Disney+ show continues the classic cartoon series X-Men, which originally aired on Fox from 1992-1997. But despite featuring costumes and a lineup that debuted in the pages of early ’90s X-Men comics, the series owes its greatest debt to the comics Chris Claremont and Louise Simonson wrote in the ’70s and ’80s. Over five seasons, the X-Men animated series adapted some of the most beloved stories of those decades, including “Days of Future Past” and “The Dark Phoenix Saga.“
Yet, as much as the animators covered great tales from those eras, they left out some great stories involving team founder Professor Charles Xavier’s departure from the team, after which he appoints former arch-enemy Magneto as team leader and...

Superman & Lois Episode 7
It took seven episodes, but we’ve finally learned the secrets of the mysterious stranger who up until now has only been known as “Captain Luthor.” Since the first episode of Superman & Lois aired back in February, fans (and journalists) have been buzzing about the identity of the man under the armor who has been giving Superman a hard time, and lately, spending a lot of time with Lois Lane.
And while everyone just took the armor’s AI at its word that this is a “Captain Luthor” from elsewhere in the DC multiverse, Superman & Lois episode 7, “Man of Steel,” turns all of that on its head, as it turns out that almost everything we had assumed about this character is wrong.
Fans learn the truth about the Stranger at the same time that Superman and...

1997 was not a good year for the comic book movie in general, even if most of the headlines were rightfully stolen by Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin completing the franchise’s downward trajectory from brooding and atmospheric Gothic blockbusters into an exercise in selling toys to children that’s so inane it still boggles the mind that it arrived just eight years after Tim Burton’s first installment.
George Clooney may have taken most of the credit for putting the entire genre on life support, but Batman & Robin wasn’t the only terrible DC adaptation released that year. Just twelve months after Kazaam, Shaquille O’Neal proved once again that he had absolutely no future as an actor when he headlined Steel, which tanked spectacularly at the box office after bringing in a paltry $1.7 million on a $16 million budget.

With an enormous swath of the world involved in varying degrees of social distancing, many of us suddenly find ourselves with a lot of time on our hands. Never fear! There are more options for streaming comics than ever before, and that means we have access to more of comics history, more hidden gems and epochal runs than ever before. But the variety of options to read can be daunting. That’s why we’ve put together a recommendation list of some of our favorite comics binge reads to help you through quarantine.
DC Universe rolled out in 2017 as the first full-service entertainment streaming platform – old shows, old movies, new shows, new movies, and a huge library of comics. And while a lot of the excitement over the platform has been about that original or new shows (justifiably! Harley Quinn and Doom Patrol are amazing!), it also gave us access...

This year the character with the longest name in comics, and one of the coolest alter egos in comics, turns thirty years old. I am of course talking about the time-travelling mutant bad-ass that is Nathan Christoper Charles Dayspring Summers aka Cable. Although he has also been known as Askani’son, Chosen One, Traveler and Soldier X. Thirty years may not seem a lot at first glance when up against industry titans like Batman and Superman, or ever his fellow X-Men but when you consider Cable debuted as Cable in 1990 pre the comic market crash and then he came out the other side and years later was the co star of a very successful movie and you could argue he is more popular than ever! Then I would say things have turned out pretty decent for the baby with the glowing eye.
What word best sums up Cable? How about convoluted?...

I suppose it was inevitable that DC’s biggest female hero would get the Young Adult makeover at some point, and it’s slightly surprising it’s several books in. We’ve seen young versions of Black Canary, Catwoman, Mera, Raven, and Harley Quinn, so now it’s Diana’s turn. Although aimed at the Young Adult market, which is a pretty lucrative one from what I can see, all the previous books have been pretty decent efforts, managing to marry together traditional Young Adult themes with the central core of the characters. I’m expecting more of the same with Young Diana.
So, this graphic novel is actually adapted from the Wonder Woman: Warbringer young adult novel, by bestselling author Leigh Bardugo, the first in the DC Icons series of books, again all aimed at the teen market.

Last year we learned that Marvel Studios was interested in developing a movie based on their comic book property Power Pack. The comic centers around a grou of superpowered kids who embark on adventures to fight evil. It was director James Gunn who originally pitched this movie to Marvel.

Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, the Phantom Stranger, Sandman's Death, and Batman: Death in the Family are all getting the DC animated treatment.
A new series of DC Animated Shorts are coming in 2019, and the list is full of surprises. DC and Warner Brothers Animation announced a slate of five short animated stories led by five very different characters - Batman, Sgt. This is Death’s first appearance in non-comics media. Her story sounds a little bit like Death: The High Cost of Living, the miniseries created by Neil Gaiman and Chris Bachalo - manic pixie Endless girl meets an artist and helps him work through his personal issues to come to grips with his artistic legacy and inevitable demise. Burbank, CA – Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, in partnership with DC, are currently in production on five new DC Showcase animated shorts for release in 2019-2020.
Inspired by characters and stories from DC’s robust portfolio, the all-new series of shorts will be included on upcoming DC Universe Movies releases, with exception of an innovative Batman: Death in the Family long-form animated short, which will anchor a compilation set for distribution in late 2020.
Each of the five shorts – entitled Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Death, The Phantom Stranger and Batman: Death in the Family – opens with a new, live-action branding sequence that features a few Easter Eggs specially added for observant fans.
Sgt. Rock is executive produced and directed by Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) from a script by award-winning comics writers Louise Simonson & Walter Simonson and Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen). The original tale finds battle-weary Sgt.

If you’ve been collecting DC animated movies for some time, then you probably remember the Showcase shorts from nearly a decade ago. For those unfamiliar, these truncated stories allowed for the likes of the Spectre, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow to shine alongside whichever feature film they complemented. Not long after, each were compiled on a separate home video release, Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam, which was considerably meatier than its brethren but still technically a short itself.
Now, after a lengthy hibernation, the concept has been resurrected. Soon enough, cult favorites such as Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Death and the Phantom Stranger will stand next to whatever corresponding animated flicks Warner Bros. choose. And much like before, each of those will join a lengthier short in the form of Batman: Death in the Family in one handsome Blu-ray package later on in 2020.

DC Comics have of late been celebrating the 80th anniversary of both a flagship title, in Action Comics, and their flagship character, Superman. Both are, of course, fully worthy of such accolades. Action Comics has been continuously published since the dawn of the comic book industry, and without Superman there would possibly be no comic book industry. He was the spark that lit the flame. I have already reviewed DC’s 80 Years of Superman book, which was a love letter to every decade of Superman’s adventures, cherry picking some of the many high points from the 1930′s to the present day. It was very much a look back at Action Comics greatest hits, and a great reminder it was too. But what about the future?

This review contains minor spoilers.
Even if you aren’t a fan of Superman, you can’t deny that he paved the way for all superheroes to follow. To say the first issue of Action Comics that shipped all the way back in 1938 was a game-changer is quite the understatement, for it forever reshaped the pop culture landscape.
With that, I find it highly appropriate that very title be the first ongoing series to reach the 1000 milestone. As such, DC pulled out all the stops with this oversized anniversary issue, assembling some of the greatest creators to have ever touched the Man of Steel for what is an anthology of sorts. Really, it’s a veritable who’s who, as they secured the services of Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, Scott Snyder, Marv Wolfman, Geoff Johns and Richard Donner, to name but a few.
Speaking of which,...

If you came of age reading comics in the 80’s or afterward, Chris Claremont is a person who needs no introduction. Arguably, the most successful mainstream comic writer of all time, Chris wrote the singular team comic for a generation of readers and set the template for a myriad of other media featuring the world’s most Merry Mutants.
His work on such Marvel Comics as X-men, New Mutants and Wolverine didn’t just set the standard for super hero development and angst in its era. No, Chris’ impact extends to audiences that have never read one of his comics, making a way for Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine and Kitty Pryde to make their mark across the world and maybe across the Universe.
We can only hope.

Love him or hate him, you have to acknowledge that every superhero you admire today owes their existence to the Man of Steel – and it all started back in 1938 with the release of Action Comics #1. In those pages, we saw the debut of Superman, who soon went on to completely take over that title and headline an ongoing series of his own.
Originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Big Blue has since inspired fans in radio productions, animation, live action cinema and especially the realm of television, which is seemingly never bereft of Kal-El or his supporting characters for too long.
Not surprisingly, DC Comics intend on honoring his enduring legacy this spring with the historic release of Action Comics #1000, the first comic book to organically reach that milestone. (Face it, Deadpool‘s tongue-in-cheek thousandth issue doesn’t count.) And as such, it obviously won’t be your average twenty-odd page release.

Rob Liefeld, comic book maestro and the creative genius behind the Merc With a Mouth, fanboys over Nathan Summers (Aka Cable) in this really rather awesome behind-the-scenes photo from Deadpool 2.
First unveiled via Liefeld’s own Instagram feed, the image finds Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) between takes, as the actor shares a laugh with the man responsible for his on-screen anti-hero in the first place – Liefeld is one of four credited with the creation of Cable, alongside Chris Claremont, Louise Simonson and Rick Leonardi.
It’s not a particularly revealing photo by any means, so don’t go in expecting any clues pertaining to Deadpool 2‘s story; instead, this is a welcome peek behind the curtain, as it gives fans a chance to see Rob Liefeld on set. And let’s face it: having the creator of Deadpool present between takes can only be a good thing.

It's kind of interesting that The Gifted has established itself as a plot-heavy action show well enough that an episode where mutants using their powers to break into a federal building, steal a tonne of data, and then hold back a hail of bullets while making a Big Rig fly and disappear is a quiet character episode. But that's what the show is now, and since we didn't spend the whole thing in a shootout with Sentinel Services, there was a lot...

1.2 rX
It's still really early to say this, but watching rX, the second episode of The Gifted, the thing that struck me the most about it is how this show conveys how utterly shitty it must be to be a mutant better than anything live action since the first movie.
For such a new show, one of its biggest strengths is how completely thought-out the world is. At one point early in the episode, Jace (the bad dude from Sentinel Services) mentions that "damaging property with mutant powers is a serious federal crime." That's a more robust legal framework than we are used to in the comics, where the law usually doesn't go past "Mutants/Heroes must register," and occasionally...

As The Gifted lands in the UK, we go looking for other families with superpowers to be reckoned with...
As The Gifted brings the super-powered Strucker siblings to the screen alongside their (currently) unpowered parents, we got thinking: what other super-powered families are out there? Here’s what we came up with…
Power Pack
Created in the early 80s by Louise Simonson and June Brigman, the Power Pack were four super-powered siblings (with the surname Power, natch) who used to sneak out to operate as a team while keeping their identities secret from their parents. It was sort of like the Famous Five, but in the Marvel Universe. Throughout their run the swapped powers and codenames, but the siblings were Alex, Julie, Jack and Katie, and the powers were energy manipulation, mass manipulation, gravity manipulation and light manipulation.
