ReviewWhile 'Pichaikkaran 2', directed by Vijay Antony himself, has a lot of empty rhetoric on poverty, some crucial plot threads are left hanging.Vijay Antony in Pichaikkaran 2: Youtube/Saregama TamilPichaikkaran 2 begins with the slogan ‘Money is injurious to the world’. Logically then, the film should be about how money destroys those who have it, but the entire film is about how amazing life can be when you have wealth and how terrible it is when you don’t have it. As slogans go, it’s safe to say that this one misses the mark by a mile. The first Pichaikkaran (2016), directed by Sasi and starring Vijay Antony, was about a rich man who lives as a beggar because a sage tells him that this will help him save his mother who is in a coma. Pichaikkaran 2 is directed by Vijay Antony himself – and follows pretty much the same formula,...

KollywoodKamal and Crazy Mohan have produced some of the best comedies together.Sowmya RajendranJust a few hours after Girish Karnad passed away, fans of cinema and theatre were in for another rude shock. Mohan Rangachari, best known as Crazy Mohan, too chose this very day to bid his final goodbye. If you were born in the '80s or '90s in Tamil Nadu, Crazy Mohan was an inevitable part of your childhood. Before stand up comedy shows became all the rage in our metros, an evening of humour in a Chennai weekend usually meant a Crazy Mohan stage play. You could go for these plays with the entire family; the humour rarely hurt, though it landed all the right punches. Many a time, the joke was only half-funny, but we laughed because of how it was delivered, how cleverly the words were used to distort the meaning. The crowd...

Flix FlashbackIt's not difficult to make a film like 'Apoorva Sagodharargal' now with the technology that we have, but it's indeed a wonder that a film of such quality was made decades ago. Anand Kumar RSDirected by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, Kamal Haasan’s blockbuster film – Apoorva Sagodharargal hit the theatres in April 1989, exactly 30 years ago. This was a phase when Kamal, post the success of Nayagan, had started experimenting with not just different genres, but also myriad looks for himself in each of his films. Donning the role of a dwarf was one such idea. It’s not difficult for an average adult sized person to play a dwarf character in these times of technological advances. But, one must admit that it would have taken a lot of courage to do so in an era when there was no computer graphics to aid the visual effects. Kamal had that in him.
