Leading Black U.S. congressman John Lewis has joined “Ahimsa – Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless,” the upcoming documentary on non-violent political struggle.
The film was produced to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth and tackles issues including race relations, the under-trodden members of society, and restoration of human rights. Coming at a time when the Black Lives Matter movement has pushed America’s racial inequality problems to the top of the agenda, the film also explores how Gandhi’s message inspired the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S., including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Congressman Lewis.
Acknowledged as one of the most courageous people the civil rights movement has known, Lewis says Gandhi’s message of commitment and non-violence instructed his own journey. Lewis was the youngest person to speak at the 1963 March on Washington. He recently said that the killing...

Editor’s note: Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, veteran South African producer Anant Singh, whose films include Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom and 2004 Oscar nominee Yesterday, has penned an open letter on the 44th anniversary of the historic student uprising in Soweto, South Africa. The anti-Apartheid uprising was a series of demonstrations led by black students, many of them children, in response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the main language in local schools. The protests were met with fierce police brutality and it is estimated that hundreds died. Below is Singh’s letter.
Black Lives Matter
‘The last 20 days since the slaying of George Floyd in the USA has been a revelation, with an outpouring of humanity all around the world, a solidarity that is long overdue.
As a South African, I reflect on my life as part of the oppressed majority that endured the harshness of legislated racism: apartheid.

Principal photography starts Monday on Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan's revenge thriller "Remember," produced by Robert and Ari Lantos and starring an international cast: Christopher Plummer (who won a supporting actor Oscar in 2010 for "Beginners"), Martin Landau, Dean Norris, Bruno Ganz, Jurgen Prochnow and Henry Czerny as Plummer's son. Let's hope the movie turns out better than Egoyan's last attempt at a thriller, "The Captive," which earned negative reviews after it was shown in the Cannes competition (critics might have been more forgiving had the film been displayed in an official sidebar). (Toh! coverage here.) A24 will release the film on VOD via DirectTV. Benjamin August's original screenplay for "Remember" combines a contemporary revenge plot with World War II history. Executive producers are Mark Musselman (“Being Julia”) and Anant Singh (“Mandela, Long Walk to...

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom director Justin Chadwick talks to Nfts students about ‘authenticity’
Director Justin Chadwick has given a masterclass about his latest feature film, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, to first year students at the National Film and Television School (Nfts).
Based on Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, it chronicles his early life including 27 years in prison for his role as leader of the Black resistance movement the Anc, before becoming South Africa’s President and working to rebuild the country’s once segregated society.
Speaking in conversation with Nfts head of documentary Dick Fontaine, Justin Chadwick said he’d tried to make the film as ‘authentic’ and true to life as possible: “Mandela’s life spanned almost 100 years of South African history and the impact of apartheid on South Africans is still being felt. I wanted the film to be real. This is present history.”

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" led the pack with 11 nominations including Best Film, British Film (who knew "Gravity" was a British movie?), Director for Cuaron, Screenplay for Cuaron and his son Jonas, and Actress for Sandra Bullock.
The biggest snub in my humble opinion was "Dallas Buyers Club" which appeared nowhere on the nominations list. Apparently, the British Academy did not deem Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto award-worthy!
The BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera house in London. Will "Gravity" emerge as the victorious movie that night? And by the way, "Gravity" was my No. 1 favorite film of 2013!

Early this morning saw the announcement of the nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards for 2013. For the most part, they look like all of the other guild nominations we’ve seen over the past month or so (including all five director nominees who were just nominated for the DGA’s top award), but there are a few interesting differences to take note of.
First off, Philomena has a much stronger presence here, but given that it is a British film, it’s hardly surprising. You may also notice a lot of love for Behind the Candelabra, a film that was only shown on TV in the States, making it ineligible for theatrical awards.
However, aside from that, just about all the major players are here. Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. 12 Years a...
