The Movie: "Starf***ers"
Where You Can Stream It: Mubi
The Pitch: A mere 15 minutes is all it takes to be wholly transported into the somewhat Lynchian and altogether entrancing, surrealist mind of queer filmmaker Antonio Marziale with this utterly transcendent short that was presented in competition at Sundance, Telluride, and Berlinale last year.
The film follows an escort (Cole Dolan) who visits with a Hollywood big-shot (Jonathan Slavin) that promised him stardom ... in time, and with some, ahem, favors in the mix. Things go a bit off the rails, however, when a familiar face (that of Marziale himself) unexpectedly joins in on the fun. Part thriller, part fever dream, all queer vengeance, this movie is a shock to the system...

Madonna took to the stage of the Grammys on Sunday to introduce Sam Smith and Kim Petras.
The appearance led to an explosion of comments on Twitter — not about the content of her introduction, but about the appearance of her facial features.
In fact, her appearance at the award show was met with a seemingly endless stream of snarky comments implying the music icon has had some work done.

The spark for “Home Front,” an original play running through Feb. 19 at Burbank’s Victory Theatre Center, came 25 years ago when the first scene was written as part of a playwriting-focused benefit event.
Warren Leight, the Tony-winning writer (“Side Man”) and seasoned showrunner (“Law & Order: Svu”), couldn’t get the pages he’d written about an interracial love story out of his head. A widowed young white woman and a Black Navy officer fall in love after meeting in Times Square on V-j day as World War II ends and a new socioeconomic era dawns.
“It lingered,” Leight told Variety. “It was a romantic scene of infinite possibility.”
It would take three more decades, the loss of his uncle and a global pandemic for Leight to see the story come to fruition in its first full-scale production.

Calum Worthy and Krista Marie Yu have plenty of TV experience between them. Worthy rose to fame by starring in Disney Channel shows like "Austin & Ally" before graduating to more mature subject matter in "American Vandal" and "The Act." Meanwhile, Yu appeared regularly on more recent sitcoms like "Dr. Ken" with Ken Jeong and "Last Man Standing" with Tim Allen. That made starring in Hulu's new meta sitcom comedy "Reboot" a bit surreal and therapeutic.
"Reboot," from "Modern Family" creator Steven Levitan, follows the creation of a revival of the fictional early 2000s sitcom "Step Right Up," a riff on shows like "Full House" and "Step by Step." In the series, Worthy plays Zack, the formerly cute child star of the original sitcom that's being rebooted with the same cast, which includes Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer, and Johnny Knoxville as his co-stars. Minnie Driver yelling, “Oy! Oy!” at people she disapproves of is, quite simply, a thing of beauty. But more than that, it’s an act we need to support each and every opportunity we get. Sheer joy is experienced by all within earshot when she tosses her English colloquialism like a grenade at unsuspecting offenders, and simple pleasures like this are in such short supply how dare you, I or anyone deprive the world of even one?
It’s with this in mind that I throw my full endorsement behind “Speechless,” Driver’s new ABC comedy wedged between “The Goldbergs,” “Modern Family” and “Black-ish” as the missing piece of the network’s award-worthy (and award-winning) family night lineup. Yes, there are a few pacing issues in the 22-minute pilot, and recommending a series based on one episode of television is a risky gamble critics are asked to make far too often.

The Muppets are returning to primetime, one of three new comedies picked up by ABC on Thursday evening. ABC also has picked up "The Real O'Neals" and "Dr. Ken" to series. But really... "The Muppets"! All official programming details will come with ABC's upfront presentation on Tuesday (May 12), but here's what we know for now: *** Longtime "Big Bang Theory" showrunner and Muppets guardian Bill Prady and Bob Kushell are co-writers on what is described as "a contemporary, documentary-style show that, for the first time ever, will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires." This is "a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages" and it remains to be announced which Muppets will take part. For purposes of the art with this story, I'm assuming Kermit. *** "Dr. Ken" was written by Jared Stern,...

ABC has ordered three comedy pilots to series, inviting Ken Jeong, Martha Plimpton and The Muppets back to primetime this fall. “The Muppets,” from ABC Studios and co-writers and co-executive producers Bill Prady and Bob Kushell, will be a fresh take that hopes to “explore the Muppets” personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires.” “Dr. Ken” sees “The Hangover” franchise funny man Jeong as a brilliant doctor with no bedside manner at work or at home. The TV network upfronts have begun and NBC has released its fall schedule. Katherine Heigl‘s political drama State of Affairs will get that powerful time slot after The Voice while The Biggest Loser bumps what has long been a home to comedy on Thursday nights.
NBC also ordered three new comedies including the gay parenting comedy One Big Happy, which stars Elisha Cuthbert as a lesbian who has a child with her best friend (Nick Zano) when he meets the woman of his dreams. It also ordered Mission Control where Krysten Ritter plays an engineer dealing with sexism in 1960s space race. Just keeping busy before its big schedule announcement on Sunday, NBC picked up a trio of comedies on Friday afternoon, including two from executive producer Will Ferrell. The "Anchorman" star and "Anchorman" director Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions is behind "Bad Judge" and "Mission Control," which will be joined by "One Big Happy" on NBC's slate for next season. Sadly, Ferrell has nothing to do with "One Big Happy," but with Ellen DeGeneres executive producing, it doesn't lack for behind-the-scenes starpower. Let's look at the three new NBC comedies and let's try not to resent that they were ordered while "Community" was cancelled... The cast of "Better Off Ted" is back together.
The late, lamented ABC comedy isn't coming back on the air, unfortunately, but the reason for their reunion -- a music video from one of their own, Malcolm Barrett -- is not a bad consolation prize.
Better still, Barrett's single, "Revenge of the Nerds," is pretty darn good.
Barrett, who played Lem on "Better Off Ted" and also co-stars in "Larry Crowne," is also a spoken-word artist and rapper who goes by the name Verbal. "Revenge of the Nerds" is his first single, and it features cameos by his "Ted" co-stars Jonathan Slavin (Phil), Portia DeGeneres (Veronica), Jay Harrington (Ted) and Andrea Anders (Linda), along with series creator Victor Fresco.

Given all of the outrageous and inaccurate things Newsweek "journalist" Ramin Setoodeh has said in the past, it's no surprise that his latest attempt to play the victim ("the gay media elite is mean to me!") over on The Daily Beast is as poorly written and reasoned as his usual work. But this time it also includes a mention of us that completely misrepresents the article it references. (We also write about the rest of Setoodeh's bait-and-switch/I'm a victim! argument.)
In an attempt to obfuscate and distract his past observations about gay actors being unable to play straight roles, Setoodeh changes the subject to the fact that according to him the Hollywood powers that be don't seem willing to cast gay actors in gay parts. To support his claim, he references our article 2010: The Year Gay TV Grew Up and writes "The blog AfterElton.

FX have announced they are to show one of my favourite sitcoms, Better off Ted, from July 27th. Think Arrested Development meets The Office, but instead of the Bluth Family, think evil American corporation.
Meet Ted Crisp. Head of Research and Development at Veridian Technologies, a corporation that thrives on its company ethos: there is no such thing as right or wrong. Ted manages a team of scientists always on a technological quest to develop a unique, robotically advanced gadget or gizmo that will save the company millions. From state-of-the-art skin reflecting detectors that turn off lights to hair-growth formulas guaranteed to change the lives of the follicly challenged, these lab geeks are the best thing since the creation of the Internet. But sometimes little things get in the way of the R&D process-cryogenically freezing employees, medieval fight clubs, young girls named Rose to name a few…

No Gay. Lesbian Joke. No Gay. Gay Joke. No Gay. Ooh, Look An Actual Gay!
This week the major networks announced their fall line-ups and mid-season replacements, and overall the news wasn't great for gay characters. Ugly Betty had already been deep-sixed on ABC, and as expected, NBC axed Trauma with gay paramedic Tyler and Mercy with gay nurse Angel, while the CW dropped Melrose Place, not that what's his face got much screentime anyway. Also not unexpectedly, ABC isn't bringing back the hilarious Better Off Ted which had two out actors Jonathan Slavin and Portia de Rossi, and which was usually gay-friendly.
Of the pilots that weren't picked up, the two biggest disappointments were ABC passing on the Cheyenne Jackson/Christopher Sieber sitcom It Takes a Village and CBS not going for the drama The Quinn-tuplets, both of which featured significant gay content.
So what did the networks go for of gay interest?...

To no surprise, ABC's Better Off Ted has been cancelled after two seasons on the air. Though it was a hit with critics and a devout group of fans, it just never found a mass audience.
Better Off Ted follows Ted Crisp (Jay Harrington) and his fellow employees at Veridian Dynamics, a strange and heartless technology company. The rest of the cast includes Andrea Anders, Jonathan Slavin, Malcolm Barrett, and Portia de Rossi.
Last May, ABC decided to show some faith in the freshman sitcom and renewed Better Off Ted for a second season. At that time, the ratings weren't great and they got even worse after the renewal announcement.
When the network began airing the remainder of season one during the summer months, they averaged a terrible 0.74 in the 18-49 demographic and 2.09 million viewers.

Tisha Campbell-Martin and Duane Martin are both returning to network television.
The husband and wife actors have landed pilots for the upcoming TV season, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Campbell-Martin has a regular role in ABC's "Wright vs. Wrong," as the Hollywood gossip-obsessed stylist to Evelyn Wright (Debra Messing), a strong, right-wing politician who isn't as unflapplable as she may seem in public.
Martin is heading over to NBC for the autobiographical Paul Reiser pilot "Next," playing a restaurant owner and best friend of Reiser's character, a former TV star who is now dealing with regular everyday life.
Additional pilot casting:

- The CW's drama pilot "Hms" has added Dejan Loyola
- Jonathan Slavin ("Better Off Ted") has joined "Team Spritz," a comedy on CBS. This is in second position to "Ted."

Last night, Better Off Ted registered yet another poor performance in the ratings. While the ABC sitcom was up in the 18-49 demographic by 30%, it still ranked a distant fourth place for the time slot. That's not really a surprise considering that the series is pitted against some powerhouses on the other networks. Why doesn't ABC move the series to another night?

When we stopped by the "Better Off Ted" set last month, Malcolm Barrett (Lem) and Jonathan Slavin (Phil) talked at length -- you can watch the clip -- about this week's episode and the internet extras it yielded.
The storyline for this particular half hour launches when a memo with a typo mistakenly demands that Veridian employees speak offensively to one another in the workplace.
While filming the ep, cast and crew produced a few outtakes which definitely won't make it to air on ABC. But who cares, because you can watch them here... if you're okay with "off color" humor. Seriously, you've been warned.
Take a look-see at your own discretion...

We have covered the show a couple of times, but I agree with giovannif that Bot definitely deserves higher ratings than it is getting and I'm more than happy to do my part to save the show.
So here are five reasons you should be watching Better Off Ted -- plus the latest episode!
1) Out actor Jonathan Slavin
Slavin plays Phil, one of the nutty scientists who work for Veridian Dynamics creating all sorts of bizarre products that tend to cause a lot of problems for everyone involved. Phil is straight and married, though we are yet to see his wife, and Phil's primary relationship is with his fellow scientist Lem (Malcolm Barrett). There was a decent selection of gay television last week.
The holidays are likely a time for family, whether it’s your biological family, or a family you chose. Whether across town or across the country, you probably ended up spending more time with family in the last week. And if you’re lucky, you had access to the TV remote at some point. So what did you watch?
Television is a great equalizer. Americans in particular feel very comfortable inviting these characters into their homes and making them friends, week after week. The only gays some people knew for years were Will Truman and Jack MacFarland. And many a person has used a television program as a bridge from their life to their family’s lives.
This holiday week actually offered a lot of gay television. We had Better Off Ted, Glee encore episodes, Modern Family, even RuPaul’s Drag Race and Absolutely Fabulous.

Last spring, ABC renewed venerable comedy Scrubs and newbie Better Off Ted, despite their low ratings. Now that they're back, the network is in a hurry to get rid of them.
Scrubs follows hospital life as seen through the eyes of Dr. J.D. Dorian (Zach Braff). After having left Sacred Heart last season, he's returned to help teach a new crop of med students. Others in the current cast include Donald Faison, John C. McGinley, Ken Jenkins, Sarah Chalke, Eliza Coupe, Kerry Bishe, Michael Mosley, and Dave Franco.

Chicago – With their renewal of “Better Off Ted” and “Scrubs,” it’s clear that ABC is unwilling to throw in the towel and give up on a comedy that’s not finding its audience. Before the wonderful arrival of “Modern Family,” easily one of the best shows on TV, ABC was not recently known as the place for laughs and there has clearly been a conscious effort to change that including giving the relatively audience deficient “Better Off Ted” another shot at finding a following (as well as scheduling an entire night of new comedy to start the season on Wednesdays).
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0
With a second-season premiere tonight and the recent arrival of the first season on DVD, if “Better Off Ted” has a shot at even cult status, it better happen soon. The ratings near the end of last season were abysmal and I’ll admit that I had written off the show,...
