Queen Elizabeth II has granted war hero Alan Turing a posthumous pardon under Royal Prerogative of Mercy. Turing cracked the Enigma code and dramatically shortened the war. He was arrested for gross indecency in 1952 for his relationship with a man, and later killed himself after being sentenced to chemical castration.
U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby has denied the state of Utah’s request for a stay of his decision legalizing marriage equality in the state. The Attorney General has filed for another stay with the 10th Circuit, and this request will be heard, but the outcome and the timeline are uncertain.
Meanwhile, in something I wasn’t expecting to see, the Boy Scouts, wearing rainbow neckerchiefs delivered pizza to same-sex couples waiting in line for marriage licenses.

Many films torture their characters (e.g. the Saw series; I Spit on Your Grave). Drew Denny, a truly beautiful woman who has written, helmed, and stars in this semi-lesbian road trip, has decided instead to scourge the audience with directorial incoherence, an abysmal screenplay, inane antics, and incessantly showing off her ultra-white teeth. At times, you’re not sure if you are watching an exploration of two women’s lives or the world’s longest Crest commercial.

Kody — I had to sympathize with you, when you and 15 of your children were blocked from seeing the Mormom museum in Carthage, Illinois by the director, just because you’re polygamists, on this week’s episode of ‘Sister Wives’. That was so wrong!
Sister Wives Kody Brown -- I may not agree with you taking four wives, but I say, live and let live, and I felt sorry for your family — especially your children when you were refused entry to a Mormon museum because of your lifestyle. Kody and his four wives, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn, endured three days of endless driving for 15 to 16 hours in two giant RVs to get from Las Vegas to Nauvoo. With 15 children on board, including several extremely reluctant teenagers, every pitstop on...

The Master confirms Paul Thomas Anderson as the only American film-maker of his generation who could be mistaken for a junior member of Hollywood's golden age
Hollywood's prestige season is upon us and, despite a parade of heavy hitters, including Steven Spielberg's Lincoln and the Wachowski-Tykwer adaptation of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas, no potential Oscar winner is more ambitious – or more likely to provoke discussion regarding its meaning and intent – than Paul Thomas Anderson's sixth feature, The Master.
Anderson's subtly disorienting, deeply engrossing study of the symbiotic relationship between charismatic cult leader Lancaster Dodd, magnificently played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, and his disturbed follower Freddie Quell, indelibly embodied by Joaquin Phoenix, is a panoramic chamber drama. Punctuated by persistent close-ups, it's an extended two-shot epic in its sweep.

Who knew what to expect when The Book of Mormon opened on Broadway in March 2011? After all, the show’s creators—South Park’s Matt Stone and Trey Parker and Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez—were best known for dreaming up Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo and puppets who loved porn. But the musical, which follows two missionaries sent to a Ugandan village ravaged by famine, AIDS, and a warlord, was heralded as both blasphemous and heartwarming. Stone explains the appeal: “Can people have really goofy beliefs but be good people? That’s The Book of Mormon.” After racking up nine Tony Awards, the show is finally coming to the town that launched Stone and Parker; it opens at the Pantages Wednesday. Amen to that.
When you were writing the show, was it driven by the song lyrics or by certain themes you wanted to hit?...

Movies — David Edelstein 1. The MasterFollowing his indelible portrait of one American monster in There Will Be Blood, Paul Thomas Anderson tackles another — an L. With Gov. Romney the clear favorite to win the Republican nomination, the question of a Mormon president in the White House will be a hot topic this election season. One of the most prominent displays of Mormonism is TLC's popular reality show "Sister Wives," in which an openly polygamist, Fundamentalist Mormon family shares their life and faith with the world.
While The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has officially rejected polygamy, the Brown family openly continues with the practice.
"Well, we're abiding by it because we believe the ancients used to," Kody Brown, the 44 year old father of 17 children and husband to four wives told The Huffington Post in a phone interview. "I mean all the cool guys in the Old Testament had more than one wife. It didn't make them righteous. They had to be righteous in spite of it."

Update: The Book Of Mormon, the audacious musical by South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Avenue Q's Robert Lopez dominated the 2011 Tony Awards tonight at Manhattan's Beacon Theater. The musical won nine of the 14 awards for which it was nominated, and ended the Tonycast by winning Best Musical. The musical was the heavy favorite for that coveted prize, so much so that when the award was presented by Chris Rock, he said before introducing the nominees that it was so clear which show would win that it was like "taking a hooker to dinner; you know you're going to get laid." Sure enough, Trey Parker, flanked by lead producers Anne Garefino and Scott Rudin, accepted the award and thanked "our co-writer who passed away, Mr. Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon religion." Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, the 65th annual Tony Awards also brought multiple awards for...

They've conquered Broadway, talk radio, the U.S. Senate-and they may win the White House. Walter Kirn on why Mitt Romney and 6 million Mormons have the secret to success, in this week's Newsweek.
Say what you will about him, but Mitt Romney doesn't do, or not do, anything by accident. Take June 2, when the former Massachusetts governor traveled to a quaint farm in Stratham, N.H., to "announce" his foregone conclusion of a 2012 presidential campaign. Romney has to overcome several mountainous challenges before capturing the Republican nomination, and so he spent most of the day trying to reduce them to molehills. To thaw his icy persona, Romney passed out his "famous" family chili and surrounded himself with bales of hay. To account for his moderate governing record, he reminded listeners that the Bay State legislature was "over 85 percent Democrat." And to soften concerns about "Romneycare," he admitted it was "not perfect,...

Maybe once there was a play as funny and profane, as unexpected and flat-out wonderful as "The Book of Mormon." Maybe.
It would be a good bar bet to come up with anything as original, as based in accuracy, and have it be as hilarious.
'The Book of Mormon," at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, is the hottest ticket in New York for a reason. From Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the fabulously warped minds that gave the world "South Park," and Robert Lopez of "Avenue Q" fame, this musical defines irreverent and manages to make juvenile gags funny for sophisticated audiences.
Two young Mormon missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham (Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad), are dispatched to Uganda to convert people. The village they're sent to is desperately poor, and a local warlord, General Butt-f***ing Naked, is on his own mission -- to perform clitoridectomies on village women.

Warning: Head to the nearest exit if you have yet to watch Sunday’s wholly satisfying Big Love finale. Everyone else, head onward and downward for an exclusive post mortem with series creators Mark Olsen and Will Scheffer, during which the duo tackle everything from that shocking climactic twist (crikey!), the Heather/Ben scene that ended up on the cutting room floor, and who did and didn’t commit suicide in the episode.
Tvline | Why’d you kill Bill?
Olsen: The decision came from a desire to look at all of of our characters and try and find the most positive spin on their journey.

A grand finale indeed! After five seasons, HBO's acclaimed family drama Big Love came to an end tonight, and it ended with a bang. If you haven't watched yet, tune up that TiVo. But if you've watched and you're ready to discuss the Henricksons' final hour, get in here! Want More? Follow @JenniferArrow on Twitter So there you have it: Bill Henrickson dies a martyr, as did Joseph Smith (and Jesus Christ) before him. Was his death (on Easter Sunday, no less!) essential to the empowerment of his family, or would they have found their way together had he lived? In any case, this episode had a pleasant finality on so many fronts: • Bill (Bill...

The next season of "South Park" kicks off in April, a mere few weeks after another momentous development in the career of the crass cartoon series' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. "The Book of Mormon," a musical that the duo developed alongside "Avenue Q" composer/lyicist Robert Lopez, will open at New York's Eugene O'Neill Theater in March. The story follows two modern-day Mormons in Africa, with scenes from the life of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saints movement, peppered throughout.
Does news get any better than this? Trust me when I say it's a shpadoinkle day, friends. Within my crusty black soul resides the heart of a musical theater fan, and I know there's a shitton of you theater queens out there with me. So rejoice, for Trey Parker and Matt Stone are going to bringing their talents to Broadway with a new musical called "The Book of Mormon."
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut is the best original film musical since Hedwig crooned about the towering velvetine. Catchy, infectious songs with a twisted, hilarious plot -- it's everything you could hope for from a musical. And while I feared theater was going to die with its blue-haired crowd and non-procreating mostly gay fanbase, it's been taking a maniacal bent toward the grotesque that I simply adore -- Bat Boy, Avenue Q, American Psycho. Alright, Urinetown might have been a bit much.

It was the 200th episode of South Park and Matt Stone and Trey Parker had plenty of material to cover in its 12 year history as a fun throwback episode.
The premise started off simple: Stan called Tom Cruise a fudge packer on a school trip, prompting Cruise to gather the "200" celebrities that South Park (the town, of course) has insulted over the years. From there the episode moved to to bringing back Muhammad, "Mecha-Streisand," the gingers, the Mitch Connors slash Jennifer Lopez hand, Mr. Hat, and questioning Cartman's true father.
While we've had the luxury of reading other reviews before posting ours this week, we see the rest of the Internet did not seem to be a fan. We have to tell you, after being loyal fans of this show since the start, there was so many throwbacks it was impossible not to love.

On the heels of the milestone accomplishment of airing the 200th episode of "South Park," creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have announced that they will be hitting Broadway in March of 2011 with the production "The Book of Mormon." It's a project the duo first announced back in 2008, following the passage of the gay-marriage-banning Proposition 8 in California (for which the Mormon Church campaigned heavily).
According to a press release, the Colorado duo wrote the book, music, and lyrics with Tony Award winner Robert Lopez, one of the creators of the hit musical "Avenue Q." While no cast announcements have been made, Parker will direct alongside Jason Moore (another "Avenue Q" alumnus) with Scott Rudin and Anne Garfino listed to produce.

Author David Ebershoff has put together one hell of an impressive book here. It's a story of two parts, set in different times. The first is the story of Jordan, who has been excommunicated from a secretive sect of Mormons known as the Firsts and returns home six years later after his mother is imprisoned for murdering his father. The second focuses on Ann Eliza Young, the wife of Brigham Young, one time Prophet of the Mormon church, and her escape from the clutches of polygamy. Both women are wife number 19, and have had to face hardships because of their faith. Jordan initially believes his mother guilty, but soon comes to see things a different way, leading him to investigate what really happened and return to the town that kicked him out.
Ann Eliza tells of her parents and their conversion to Mormonism, and their love of and faith in Joseph Smith and his religion,...

In response to the recent statement issued by the Parents Television Council, producers of the CW’s hit drama Gossip Girl will make changes to the show’s storyline, advertisements and characters in order to create wholesome entertainment for the country’s parent-less children.
“We really don’t have a choice. We feel compelled to do this for the impressionable kids out there with no parents or guardians,” said CW spokesperson Michelle Garrett. “Thanks to the PTC’s statement, we, along with the show’s advertisers, feel like the appropriate thing to do will be to completely overhaul the show so teens aren’t turned into sexual deviants.”
Last week, the Parents Television Council asked CW affiliates to preempt an upcoming episode of Gossip Girl in which a threesome between the show’s main characters has been teased. Promos for the show identify the act occurring between unidentified characters in an episode entitled 3Some.
