As a newspaper reporter, he covered the various revolutions in Mexico in the early 1900s, and twice accompanied revolutionary general Pancho Villa during his campaigns. One time he accidentally entered the camp of an enemy general, was accused of spying and sentenced to be shot. As he was being led before the firing squad, a reprieve came down from headquarters, sparing his life.
