Saturday Night Live wasn’t all laughs. During a Tuesday visit to The Tonight Show, Maya Rudolph and host Jimmy Fallon recalled a special moment at the read-through table.
Rudolph recalled pitching a heartfelt tribute to Ferrell during his last read-through in 2002. It never made it onto the air, but it lives on in the memories of those who were there.
“Do you remember Will’s last read-through, when you did Poetry Man and we were all just crying?” Fallon asked Rudolph.
“At the last table read, you write stuff that you know isn’t going to make it on the show, but you just do it to send off the person that you love,” Rudolph explained to the audience. “We did, it was like a parody of the Phoebe Snow song [Poetry Man], but I made it: ‘You’re the comedy man/You make everything alright.’”

Jimmy Fallon and Maya Rudolph Reminisce on Will Ferrell’s Various ‘SNL’ Behind-the-Scenes Alter Egos
Maya Rudolph reunited with her former Saturday Night Live castmate Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Tuesday night, where they reminisced over co-star Will Ferrell’s behind-the-scenes antics at Studio 8H.
Fallon asked Rudolph if she remembered a character that the Anchorman star created on set.
“Are you talking about Chip Kudrow or Ron?” interrupted Rudolph.
The host noted that the character he was thinking of was Chip Kudrow, a persona that Ferrell used for an ongoing bit, where he pretended to be Lisa Kudrow’s brother.
Rudolph explained, “Will Ferrell had a character named Chip Kudrow who would just show up at our pitch meetings.”
It’s clear that Ferrell had various alter egos on set, as Fallon asked Rudolph if Chip was the one who wore a referee shirt or overalls. This prompted Fallon to mention another one of the Barbie star’s characters, named Ron.

Donald Fagen has denied Aimee Mann’s claim that she was dropped as the opening act for Steely Dan’s new tour because, as she speculated, “they thought their audience wouldn’t like a female singer-songwriter.”

Ralph Schuckett, a keyboard player best known as a member of Todd Rundgren’s Utopia as well as an in-demand session player and producer and, later, composer for “Pokemon” and other animation projects, died Sunday at 73.
No cause of death was immediately given, although he was known to have been ill. When a Utopia reunion tour was announced in early 2018, Schuckett was announced as part of the lineup and even met with other members for a publicity photo, but he was forced to withdraw shortly before rehearsals began.
Among his early studio credits prior to joining Utopia were Carole King’s first three albums, including the landmark “Tapestry.”
“Ralph Schuckett was a sweet guy, a great friend, and a very talented cat,” King said in a statement Wednesday morning. “That’s his sparkling piano on ‘Smackwater Jack.’ Rest In Peace and love.”

In the Seventies — or any other decade, in fact — it would have been hard to imagine less-likely duet partners than Bob Dylan and Bette Midler. In the fall of 1975, Dylan was newly invigorated, coming off Blood on the Tracks, and Midler was the midst of her first flush of pop fame, which had begun with her 1973 hit “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” From their voices to their personas, they didn’t just seem to exist on separate planets but in different galaxies.

Her new song is called “I F—ed Up.” You can listen to it and most of her new album, called “Mdna” on her You Tube channel and on Facebook. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkgEJPSWRZY&feature=player_embedded#!. The album comes out a week from Tuesday, and it’s the usual hodgepodge of throwaway dance songs and a couple of ballads that have been Auto-tuned within an inch of their lives. Madonna is almost 54 and she sings, basically, about nothing. There’s no one to compare her to, really; she is unto herself. You can’t compare her to the great female singer songwriters like Carly, Carole, and Joni. She’s not a great singer like Judy Collins, Phoebe Snow, or Gladys Knight. She’s not an icon like Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, or Aretha Franklin.

You'd think a Grammys saddled with old-timers, expected wins, and repeat performances (Foo Fighters, Paul McCartney, apparent phoenix Chris Brown, and Bruce Springsteen all took the stage twice) would make for a languid viewing experience, but get this: The 2012 Grammys was one of the slickest and most entertaining award ceremonies I've seen in the past... three years? At least two, anyway.
It was pleasurable and seemingly fast, even with the bewildering shock of Whitney Houston's death still in the air and without Lady Gaga's magnificent ovoid entrance of 2011. We found fun in a truly hopeless place. And a dubious new hairdo for Rihanna too, to boot! Everyone wins.
I hate gushing snarklessly about an organization as execrably out-of-touch as the Grammys, but I can't help that the performances were palatable. Bruce Springsteen isn't quite the shuffling troubadour of Asbury Park anymore, but he was a perfect opening act:...

HollywoodNews.com:It sure is the silly season in Oscarland. Today, actress Kim Novak– a noted recluse so out of the Hollywood loop that I doubt most people under 50 know her name–took a full page ad in Variety. Her gripe was that the music for “The Artist,” the much loved silent film by Michel Hazanavicius, was taken from a movie she’d starred in over 50 years ago. Indeed, Hazanavicius credits Alfred Hitchcock’s composer, Bernard Herrmann. He’s discussed the fact that 20% of Ludovic Bource’s score comes from great movies of the past. The Academy knew it, and said that the 80% that was original was eligible for the Oscar.
Novak’s ad, so preposterous, makes it seem like she made the movie and wrote the music! (Well, it’s her one big claim to fame.) But this is a woman who shuns the spotlight. She might...

She was a musical prodigy who thrilled the world with her single ‘Poetry Man.’
Phoebe Snow, who was an incredible singer-songwriter and guitar player, died on April 26 at age 60.
Her death was the result of a brain hemorrhage in 2010 and number of other health problems over the years, including blood clots, pneumonia, congestive heart failure and a stroke, the Associated Press reports.
“The loss of this unique and untouchable voice is incalculable,” Sue Cameron, Phoebe’s manager, says. “Phoebe was one of the brightest, funniest and most talented singer-songwriters of all time.”
Phoebe released a string of impressive singles in the 1970s, including “Poetry Man,” “Love Makes a Woman” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” She put music aside early in her career to tend to her disabled daughter Valerie.
“[Phoebe was] a magnificent mother to her late brain-damaged daughter, Valerie, for 31 years,” Sue says. “Phoebe felt that was her greatest accomplishment.”
We will miss Phoebe’s beautiful voice!
