Despite leaving behind Marvel Studios to take over Dcu as the new CEO, James Gunn appears to be keeping up with Marvel releases. Recently, after watching X-Men ’97, the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer shared his opinion on the show via Threads and reflected upon how he could use a similar approach but not replicate it, for his DC projects.

When we think of Zack Snyder, our minds might automatically soar to his superhero epics like Man of Steel or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But did you know there were two other ambitious projects that, despite Snyder’s imaginative touch, ended up being even bigger financial hurdles for Warner Bros?
Yes, we’re talking about the aesthetically stunning yet underrated Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole (2010) and the stylistically bold Sucker Punch (2011).

Ever wonder why some films are a powerful combination of visual art and storytelling but fail miserably at the box office, rather than just being a flickering collection of scenes? Both films showcased Snyder’s unique narrative ambition but encountered unexpected turbulence in their financial flight.

Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.
Sucker Punch:
I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...

Thor, the God of Thunder, is one of the most beloved and fan-favorite characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While fans love his comic book iteration more, Chris Hemsworth’s live-action Thor is not far behind. After several appearances and four solo movies, Hemsworth’s Thor has a separate fan base among the Marvel fandom.

Since childhood, Kamau Coleman found solace in spending his free days and weekends at a family friend’s duplex apartment near the Venice Beach strip. While the property had been around since 1964, it had never been upgraded outside of basic maintenance.
“You can imagine we were at the ocean, so everything rusted,” Coleman tells The Hollywood Reporter. “For example, the stairs, the legs went directly into the sand and there was literally nothing holding it.”
Around the early stages of the pandemic lockdown, the building’s previous owner decided to retire, paying the tenants to vacate the property and also giving Coleman and his business partners an opportunity to get involved — hence The Redline Venice Hotel was born.
The building stands out as the only Black-owned apartment hotel on the strip, offering both short-term stays and reservations of a month or more. The name “Redline” carries a dual meaning. It symbolizes racial discrimination in housing,...

With Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame being such box office successes, many fans assumed that the Russo Brothers (Anthony and Joe Russo) would return to direct Avengers: Secret Wars. But in the years that followed, a lot changed.
During that period, the Russo Brothers helmed a few flicks through their Agbo company. Among them are the crime drama Cherry, starring Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo, and the action thriller The Gray Man, featuring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.

After creating the heartbreaking yet truly magnificent exit of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe via Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers — Joe Russo and Anthony Russo — are all set to bring new action to the screens. And this time, this peak entertainment would not be through Rdj or the MCU, but rather, ostensibly through Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling.

As it turns out, the dynamic duo recently hinted at wanting to work with Evans and Gosling once again. The project they would be collaborating on is the sequel to the masterpiece from 2022, The Gray Man. But that’s not all because Evans isn’t the only Chris the mastermind filmmakers are looking forward to working with: They also want Chris Hemsworth to reprise his iconic role!

Zack Snyder’s DC tenure is over, as it seems, but he is yet to move on from the glorious legacy he had forged in the DC universe. The director has somewhat given the studio an identity while creating his own universe as we know it as Snyderverse. Currently, Snyder is working with Netflix, but he would go back to DC in a heartbeat for one movie.

The year was 2013. With Marvel raking in billions at the box office with its interconnected superhero movies, it was time for DC to kick off its own extended universe. After all, Marvel had taken characters like Iron Man and Thor (both relatively obscure at the time) and Captain America (hopelessly old fashioned) and turned them into bone-fide sensations that led to 2012's The Avengers.
Zack Snyder led the charge on creating a DC Extended Universe, directing many of the franchise's films and producing most of the others.
But Zack Snyder's Dceu never did match the success of its rival franchise, and after a decade of faltering box office receipts and 'meh' reviews the whole thing came to an anticlimactic end with the 2023 flop Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Now the entire thing is getting rebooted. So what does Zack Snyder think of that?

It took only three days for Zack Snyder’s sequel for his 2023 Rebel Moon to get to Netflix’s top, but it also took three days for Sydney Sweeney’s Anyone But You to topple Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver from the same chart.

Zack Snyder is baffled by the "overreactions" to his film work. The 58-year-old director has released 'Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver' and thinks that the savage criticism that its predecessor got upon release last year sums up the extreme responses to his movies.Zack told the Metro newspaper: "The reactions to my movies tend to really be these big... overreactions."Even just (with) 'Rebel Moon – Part One', I'm like, it's not that controversial of a movie."A lot of people have this crazy reaction to it. There’s no denying that the only major Superman villains to have gotten any limelight in the movies are Lex Luthor and General Zod. Even among the more underrated Akira Kurosawa films are timeless masterpieces.
If films like “Dersu Uzala” and “The Idiot” and “Kagemusha” aren’t talked about as much, it’s because the best-known Kurosawa titles — “Seven Samurai,” “Rashomon,” “Throne of Blood” — also happen to be among the most influential movies ever made, casting their shadow over the Spaghetti Western genre, “Star Wars,” and so many more.
Just within the past few weeks, a movie loosely based on “Seven Samurai,” Zack Snyder’s misbegotten “Rebel Moon Part 2,” started streaming, Spike Lee confirmed he’ll direct an adaptation of “High and Low,” and, let’s face it, there’d probably be no “Shogun” at all without the Kurosawa-immortalized Japanese samurai culture onscreen. Probably no director other than Fritz Lang and John Ford has influenced as many genres as Kurosawa, who died in 1998.
But instead of focusing so much on his impact, look at the films.

Zack Snyder’s plans for expanding his epic space opera are getting grander while the franchise’s movies are getting more and more disastrous — and they can compete with each other when it comes to their total fiasco results.
Having got its release around a week ago, the director’s sequel for last year’s Rebel Moon was presumably supposed to make it up to Snyder’s career after the first film’s failure — instead, the sequel made it all even worse.
Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver kicked it off with a very controversial reaction — the critics couldn’t be harsher, attributing the sequel a miserable score of 15% on Rotten Tomatoes while Netflix’s viewers actually got a big interest in it.
How Is Rebel Moon - Part Two Doing on Streaming?
It took only 3 days for the sequel to get more than 21 million views and around 44 million hours viewed.

It's time for another Zack Snyder slow-motion extravaganza! Snyder's big sci-fi sequel "Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver" is now on Netflix, and the reactions ... well, they ain't great, folks. The first film, subtitled "A Child of Fire," didn't fare much better — it's currently sitting at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. But what about Part Two? Sadly, it seems to be doing even worse than the original flick. As of this writing, "Rebel Moon – Part Two" has a terrible 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. And if you're thinking, "Well, that's just the critics! What are regular people saying about the movie?", you should also know that the film's audience score is a less-than-great 52%. In short, people don't seem to like what Snyder is offering here. Snyder has always had a tenuous relationship with critics, but this seems to be one of his worst-reviewed films to date. The Most Precious of Cargoes, the first animated feature from Oscar-winning French director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), will open this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The feature is a 2D animated adaptation of the best-selling book by French author Jean-Claude Grumberg. Set during World War II, it tells the story of a French Jewish family deported to Auschwitz. On the train to the death camp, in a desperate gesture, the father throws one of his baby twins out into the snow, where he’s discovered by a childless Polish couple living deep in the forest.
Hazanavicius presented the film as a work-in-progress at Annecy two years ago. French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant narrates the film with voice acting from Dominique Blanc, Denis Podalydès, and Grégory Gadebois. Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water) composed the score. Animation is from 3.0 Studio – formerly Prima Linea — the group behind the...

Heath Ledger’s acting career could have surely been flourishing even now if it hadn’t been for his tragic death back in 2008 — but his legacy still lives on.
Before the actor rose to wild prominence thanks to his leading role in a Western-coded romantic drama Brokeback Mountain, Ledger starred in a 2001 comedy that Netflix would be quick to pick up for a sequel — but luckily didn’t.
Literally at the same time with prominent Baz Luhrmann and his Moulin Rouge!, director Brian Helgeland started a trend of mixing distant historical eras up within one movie. His beloved medieval comedy A Knight’s Tale, starring Heath Ledger as a peasant squire who enters a jousting tournament replacing his late master, is a peculiar fusion of the 14th century plot vibes and a soundtrack coming straight from the 1970s.
Upon its release in 2001, the movie didn’t look very impressive for critics,...

Looking Back At Hrithik Roshan Starrer Guzaarish’s Box Office Failure ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Not all good films work at the box office, and Guzaarish was one such well-made film that tanked miserably. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in key roles, the film had things working in favor, but when it came to footfalls, it was a kind of shocker for the makers. Do you want to know how it fared at ticket windows and what its budget was? Keep reading for all the details!
The romantic drama was helmed by maverick filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It was released on 19th November 2010 and upon its arrival, the film received highly positive reviews from critics. The performances of both Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai were praised. In fact, many feel it’s still Hrithik’s best performance to date as he pulled off the character of paralyzed magician-turned-Radio jockey with utmost ease.

Zack Snyder’s early films proved him to be an interesting visionary who had a distinct style to his works. Grand visuals, the application of slow-mo sequences, and colorful imagery have been the main strengths and trademarks of a Snyder film. However, audiences have been divisive about his big screen DC films in the 2010s.
Zack Snyder’s DC tenure started with 2013’s Man of Steel
Considering the hit-or-miss nature of Snyder with audiences, the 2020s saw a big change in the director and where he puts his films. Starting from Army of the Dead, his films have only premiered on Netflix. This sudden downgrade from making big-budget studio films for the big screen to just releasing streaming films is surprising but a new report sheds light on how films are greenlit nowadays.

Embracing the cosmic scale and fervor of a true space saga, Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver, directed by Zack Snyder, serves as not just a sequel but an evolution from its precursor. Francis Ford Coppola has finally finished his magnum opus Megalopolis. The filmmaker’s self-funded sci-fi epic has reportedly been in the making since the ‘80s and the Apocalypse Now director finally got to revive it a few years ago. However, the film has a huge obstacle to pass through as prominent studios are reportedly not interested in giving a distribution deal.
Coppola’s epic has reportedly been avoided like the plague by major Hollywood studios, who allegedly do not see commercial potential in it. Though the film has names such as Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, and Audrey Plaza attached to it, there seem to be no takers. After a recent screening, fans have been reportedly campaigning for studios to give the film a wide release.

One of the most popular directors in the world, Zack Snyder is known for titles like “300”, “Watchmen”, and “Justice League”. His films revel in slow-motion action sequences, grand operatic themes, and a dark, brooding aesthetic.
Rebel Moon [Credit: Netflix]In 2023, Snyder brought his vision to the world of science fiction with “Rebel Moon” and then its sequel “The Scargiver.” While Rebel Moon promised a sprawling space adventure, critical reception was mixed at best. Given the underwhelming reviews of the duology, rumors had been running of the series shutting down. However, an industry insider recently debunked this particular rumor.

One thing everyone can agree on when it comes to the prequel trilogy is that George Lucas put his heart into those films, which can’t be said for the recent Star Wars flicks from Disney. But before departing from the iconic IP, Lucas also had plans on how the sequel trilogy would pan out, and while Disney did agree to respect his original wishes, unfortunately, it wasn’t the case.
Furthermore, following the failure of The Rise of the Skywalker, Lucasfilm strayed away from big-screen releases and shifted its focus to the small screen. But had Lucas’ original plans been incorporated, the sequel trilogy would’ve shattered stereotypes by introducing a new Darth Vader.

Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” debuted on Netflix on April 19. Critical pans aside (IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called Part Two “almost as disastrous” as Part One and gave it a D. Perhaps David’s the real “Scargiver.”), the sequel to the 2023 “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire” became the streamer’s biggest film (in any language) for the week of April 15-21. It was watched for 44.2 million hours; based on its 2:04 runtime, Netflix translates that to 21.4 million views.
On the March 6 episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Snyder said “Rebel Moon — Part One” was seen by more people (on Netflix) than the smash-hit “Barbie” (in theaters).
“Say right now, [Part One is] like almost 90 million views… 80 or 90 million accounts turned it on, give or take,” Snyder told Rogan. “They assume two viewers per screen, right? So that’s 160 million people supposedly watching… at $10 a ticket,...

Zack Snyder’s epic space opera Rebel Moon obviously wasn’t meant to end up like this, but it is what it is — the franchise’s first movie, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, kicked it off in 2023 with a very unpromising amount of negative reviews and miserable 21% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The second part of the saga seems to be even worse than that — and so far only Netflix viewers can somehow save it all.
The first movie’s total debacle didn’t stop its director from making yet another part, but it seems like the audience has a surprisingly high interest in Kora’s further adventures in an attempt to help farmers from the moon to defend their territory from the Motherworld’s menaces.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver topped the Netflix chart after its release on Friday but it didn’t make the same splash as its predecessor.
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is now available to watch on Netflix and as predicted, the film was the most watched movie on the streaming service over the weekend, as reported by Deadline.
The Scargiver lured 21.4 million pairs of eyes (or at least households) in front of a screen to watch Kora and her friends’ fight against the Motherworld, but it still fell short of the numbers of Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child Of Fire. The first instalment in the franchise brought in 23.9 million viewers upon its release in December.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver might have debuted at #1 on the English Films List for Netflix’s Top 10 with 21.4 million views, but it wasn’t enough to top the original or stand against other films on the popular streaming service. When Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire debuted in December, the Star Wars-like action film gained 23.9 million views during its opening window. While the gap between both films isn’t staggering, one has to wonder why more people failed to tune in for the continuation of Snyder’s story.

In the 90 years since his creation, Superman has had many different versions. There have been many to stand out from these, for good and bad reasons. Perhaps one of the most controversial has to be Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, which is a darker version of the character. Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel has been regarded as one of the best and most controversial films in the history of the DC Universe. It has a very interesting approach to an origin story that has been the same for decades. However, while some of the changes worked very well, others were rather controversial.
Man of Steel
The perfect example of a change that was not well-received by fans was the fate of Jonathan Kent in the film. Audiences were not happy when Clark Kent’s father was killed because of a tornado—not because they did not want him to die, but because of the reason that was given for his death.
Suggested“I have the power to do it”: Zack Snyder Defends Controversial Man of Steel Scene that Killed Off a Fan-Favorite Character
Despite this, Snyder has stood by the decision, even after a decade has passed.

Zack Snyder had his own unique approach to making his DC movies that created the very essence of the Snyderverse. Of course, the director has often found himself amid several criticisms throughout his tenure at DC, but he is also known for the defense of his vision.

Snyder’s DC tenure ended after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the studio. Still, the director has been very protective of his philosophy— often casting the inherent darkness on the characters. Particularly, putting them into a pit of moral dilemma.
