Cease all on-foot pursuit of neon-colored energy-drink vans! Quit wearing all beaded bracelets lifted from life-size sex dolls! Maddie Flynn, the teenager who went missing in Law & Order: Svu‘s Season 25 premiere, has been found.
Thursday’s episode of the procedural reveals that Maddie had, indeed, been trafficked by the same “George” who doped up Tanya Garcia and left her for dead in a Jersey motel. The good news: Maddie is alive! The bad news: She’s been made to look like a boy, loaded up on fentanyl and sold to a pervert with a thing for trees.

Looking good! Law & Order: Svu star Mariska Hargitay donned a chic gray coat while filming an episode of the NBC drama in chilly New York City on Jan. 26.
Hargitay and the rest of the Svu cast are currently hard at work on the historic 25th season of the police procedural. The show returned to TV on Jan. 18 after a longer-than-usual break due to the Hollywood strikes.
“Just a quarter of a century… no biggie,” Hargitay wrote in a November 2023 Instagram post as she headed back to the set. She also shared a smiling selfie of her and co-star Peter Scanavino, who plays Ada Sonny Carisi.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Law & Order: Svu Season 23 finale “A Final Call at Forlini’s Bar.”] There’s not much hope to be found in where Law & Order: Svu Season 23 leaves Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Counselor Rafael Barba (Raúl Esparza), who come into the episode not speaking to one another. In fact, it’s Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) who reaches out to him to defend a longtime domestic violence victim after she kills her husband. Benson does meet him at Forlini’s to think him for representing Delia (Jordana Spiro), but she won’t stay longer than that. “It’s possible to sit next to someone, have a drink, and not say a single word to each other,” he says. “I miss, you Liv.” She leaves. Then, in the final scene of the episode, Benson joins Barba at Forlini’s again, for its last call with the bar closing.

I’m not sure “Ozark” ever improved upon “Kaleidoscope.” The first season’s eighth episode takes place entirely in flashback, as director Ellen Kuras and writer Ryan Farley bounce between the pivotal choices that precede the Byrdes’ fateful decision to start laundering money. Wendy (Laura Linney) is fighting through an extended depression, brought on by a complicated miscarriage, and she’s doubly frustrated by a job market closed off to a woman who spent a few years having kids. Marty (Jason Bateman), who’s typically mocked for his cautious nature as “the numbers guy,” is being courted by Camino Del Rio (Esai Morales), who wants to hire the Chicago-based financial advisor to handle his accounts, even after (or because) Marty spots suspicious activity on the books.

The Wheel of Time has added a Wise One to its ranks: Ayoola Smart, whose previous TV credits include Killing Eve (as Kenny Stowton’s onetime flame Audrey), has joined Season 2 of the epic Prime Video adaptation in the recurring role of Aviendha.
An Aiel Maiden of the Spear, Aviendha in Wheel of Time lore is a Wise One of the Nine Valleys sept, and one of the three lovers that Rand al’Thor takes (though we of course will see if the TV series offers a new spin on the heroine).

It sounds like Raúl Esparza’s upcoming return to Law & Order: Svu will thankfully end with Rafael Barba on better terms with the squad. Esparza and Jordana Spiro are set to guest star in the Season 23 finale (May 19), Give Me My Remote reports. Barba, who left the Da’s office in Season 19, has since occasionally shown up in a professional capacity as a defense attorney, and he will be doing that once again. This time, Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) turns to him after bonding with a domestic violence victim (Spiro). Last season, Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Sergeant Odafin “Fin” Tutuola (Ice T) went to Barba for help (“Sightless in a Savage Land”). Then, earlier this season during an Organized Crime crossover (“People Vs Richard Wheatley”), Barba surprised the squad when he defended Richard Wheatley (Dylan McDermott), who was on trial for the murder of Detective Elliot Stabler’s (Christopher Meloni) wife.

Raúl Esparza will return to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” as attorney Rafael Barba in the season 23 finale, NBC confirmed to TheWrap on Thursday.
In the May 19 episode, Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) asks for his help when a victim of domestic violence — who’ll be played by Jordana Spiro of TBS comedy “My Boys” — is prosecuted.
The former Assistant District Attorney was last seen in the December episode “The People Vs. Richard Wheatley,” in which he defended Dylan McDermott’s mobster for the murder of Kathy Stabler. He successfully deadlocked the jury, resulting in a mistrial, and also succeeded in alienating Svu captain Olivia (Mariska Hargitay), who had begged him not to take the case.
Esparza made his “Svu”debut in Season 14 and became a series regular the following season, before leaving in Season 19. He has since returned as an “Svu” guest star and also appeared on “Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Well this going to be the shortest review I ever write… Small Engine Repair is as close to perfection as it gets. 5 out of 5. Told you shortest review ever… Actually I need to dig deeper into the film!
Based on a play of the same name written by director and leading man John Pollono, Small Engine Repair tells the story of Frank (Pollono), Swaino (Bernthal) and Packie (Whigham). Three friends from small-town nowhere that have always been there for each other. We first meet our boys as Frank’s daughter Crystal (Ciara Bravo) has found out she is heading to university. One thing is for sure the love these men have for Crystal is unshakeable. After a night out to celebrate the bond between our boys becomes somewhat strained. We jump...

The darkly funny American indie drama “Small Engine Repair” works best when it’s a hangout comedy starring three schlubby New England burnouts.
Based on writer-director John Pollono’s stage play, “Small Engine Repair” eventually becomes an unpleasant slow-burning thriller about revenge, sexual violence and toxic masculinity. Thankfully Pollono and his fellow co-leads, Jon Bernthal and Shea Whigham, carry the movie throughout with some choice one-liners and abundant bromantic chemistry.
Pollono, Bernthal and Whigham keep things light, believable, and charming enough, even after the abrupt and seemingly random arrival of preppy drug dealer Chad threatens to ruin the movie’s otherwise aimless fun. Chad pushes “Small Engine Repair” into unexpectedly dark territory, the kind that invites comparisons with real-life sexual predators like Brett Kavanaugh and other prominent politicians. Pollono’s affable drama doesn’t say much about its characters’ boozy locker talk, but it does hold together well enough thanks...

"I wanted tonight to be special." Vertical Entertainment has released a full trailer for an indie film titled Small Engine Repair, a feature film adaptation of the stage play by John Pollono. This was originally set to premiere at last year's SXSW Film Festival before it was cancelled. Pollono writes and directs, making his feature directorial debut, and co-stars in it with an impressive cast. It's better to know as little about this story going into it. The seemingly casual reunion of three old friends at an out-of-the-way repair shop masks a hidden agenda fueled by the arrival of a privileged young yuppie. This is described as a "black comedy that takes a dark dramatic turn" - and oh boy does it take a turn. The trailer also features some very nice quotes from various other directors, including one from Edgar Wright. Starring Jon Bernthal, Shea Whigham, John Pollono, Jordana Spiro,...

At Comic-Con@Home on Friday, Netflix unveiled a never-before-seen blooper reel for its acclaimed horror trilogy, Fear Street.
The three-parter directed by Leigh Janiak (Honeymoon) is based on R.L. Stine’s best-selling horror series of the same name, taking place in the years 1994, 1978 and 1666.
Part One picks up in ’94, watching as a group of teenagers discover that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected—and that they may be the next target. Parts Two and Three offer a deeper dive into the sinister history of Shayside, following the town through a nightmare 300 years in the making.
Janiak wrote the script for Part One: 1994 with Phil Graziadei. She scripted Part Two: 1978 with Zak Olkewicz. Part Three: 1666 was penned by Graziadei, Janiak and Kate Trefry.

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for the “Fear Street” trilogy.]
Surprise! As the “Fear Street” trilogy wraps up its run with one final entry — “Fear Street Part 3: 1666,” which hit Netflix in the wee hours of Friday morning — filmmaker Leigh Janiak still has plenty of tricks and twists up her sleeve. While the trilogy has long promised to journey back to 1666, Janiak’s film isn’t content to simply go back in time, but to also return the action to where it all started, at least cinematically: in 1994.
“We knew we wanted to go back to the 1600s, we always knew that,” Janiak said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “We also knew that we had to go back to the ’90s, because that was the present of our movies, that was the thing driving us forward. I wanted the characters, ultimately, to win and to feel like we were ending on some level of hope,...

"The Devil has come to feast on our misdeeds!" Netflix has released the third solo trailer for their highly anticipated Fear Street horror trilogy adapted from the R.L. Stine books of the same name. This trailer is for the third & final movie in the horror series, titled Fear Street Part Three: 1666. The trilogy ends at the beginning - Shadyside 1666. The origins of Sarah Fier's curse are finally revealed as history comes full circle on a night that changes the lives of Shadysiders forever. I really like the way this series has progressed backwards through time, taking us all the way back to the beginning so many years ago. The horror films follow the nightmare through Shadyside's sinister history - starting with Part One: 1994 and Part Two: 1978, both released in the last few weeks on Netflix already. The cast in Part Three: 1666 includes Sadie Sink, Emily Rudd, Kiana Madeira, McCabe Slye,...

Ranging in heights between six and seven feet—depending on the movie—the hockey masked behemoth dominates every room he’s in, even before the machete starts swinging. He’s cut a brutal path across 10 canonical films, plus a remake and a crossover movie with Freddy Krueger, and built a throne of blood amongst the horror movie pantheon.
Yet deep down, as Freddy might tease, Jason is still the mama’s boy who feels bad about being picked on as a child at summer camp…and who is still hounded by his crazed mother’s voice: Kill them, mommy, kill them!
In truth, you might even say Jason is just trying to make Mom proud one dead camp counselor at a time. After all, Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer...

Sitting somewhere between a TV event and a ready made film franchise, the second part of Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy transports us back to the late ’70s and into the heyday of the slasher movie. Bookended with our core ’90s-set story, this segment recounts the tale of the Camp Nightwing massacre, as relayed by C. Berman (Gillian Jacobs), the sole survivor of the slayings. Loosely based on the books by R.L. Stine but leaning into a hard R-rating Fear Street Part Two: 1978 is teen-centric but is about as suitable for teenage viewers as its influences–i.e. it depends on the kid.
Playing with late ‘70s and early ‘80s stalk and slash traditions, the movie is most clearly influenced by Friday the 13th and provides an origin story for a masked killer similar to Jason Voorhees. But just like Fear Street Part 1: 1994, the sequel takes pleasure in...

Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired worldwide distribution rights to Small Engine Repair, the film based on the critically acclaimed stage play (LA Critic’s Choice and New York Times Critic’s Pick).
Vertical is planning a theatrical release in September positioning the film for awards season.
The black comedy is written, directed by and starring John Pollono (Stronger) alongside Jon Bernthal, Shea Whigham (Joker), Jordana Spiro (Ozark), Spencer House (Space Force) and Ciara Bravo (Cherry).
It follows lifelong friends Frank (Pollono), Swaino (Bernthal) and Packie (Whigham) who share a love of the Red Sox, rowdy bars and Frank’s teenaged daughter Crystal (Bravo). But when Frank invites his pals to a whiskey-fueled evening and asks them to do a favor on behalf of the brash young woman they all adore, events spin wildly out of control in this exploration of brotherhood, class struggle and toxic masculinity.

Telling a trilogy backward through time objectively shouldn’t work. At the start of “Fear Street Part 2: 1978,” the middle installment in Leigh Janiak’s trio of century-spanning films based on the R.L. Stine book series, one character makes it fairly clear who will survive the tale she’s about to unspool. There’s no in media res trickery, no story-within-a-story retconning.
Yet, there’s a confidence and a streamlined approach to “1978” that makes for a richer experience in both part and whole than its predecessor “Fear Street Part 1: 1994.” The surprise isn’t that it deviates from the groundrules set out in the film before it, or even the scores of horror films from in and around the decade in which it’s set. It’s that when “Fear Street: 1978” is given the opportunity to fulfill the promises it’s made for itself, it does so unreservedly,...

Wavelength has a simple mantra — “tell great fucking stories” — but its intentions go much deeper than that. Founded in 2015 by Jenifer Westphal, the scrappy six-year-old company has been making waves with its mostly women executives developing a diverse slate of films that combine social relevance with compelling characters, while prioritizing first-time women directors and filmmakers of color.
At a time when Hollywood continues to struggle to find diverse talent behind the camera, companies like Wavelength provide essential case studies for how to lean into inclusivity from the earliest stages of the development process. Since its founding in 2015, Wavelength has produced over 30 feature films, curating a roster of award-winning, buzz-worthy titles including Sundance fare like Ekwa Msangi’s “Farewell Amor,” Jordana Spiro’s “Night Comes On,” and Tayarisha Poe’s “Selah and the Spades,” as well as high profile documentaries including Morgan Neville’s “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” which...

Netflix’s “Fear Street” teaser stirred up buzz in May for two reasons: It revealed all three movies in the trilogy would roll out over three consecutive weeks in July, and it confirmed the movies would toughen up R.L. Stine’s PG-friendly books and make them R rated. Now comes the official trailer for the “Fear Street” trilogy, all installments of which are directed by Leigh Janiak.
Netflix’s official synopsis for the “Fear Street” trilogy reads: “In 1994, a group of teenagers discovers that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected — and that they may be the next targets. Exclusive: HBO Max has opted not to proceed with Vegas High, its coming-of-age period drama pilot from writer Sarah-Raquel Jimenez, director Gillian Robespierre and Michael Showalter’s Semi-Formal Prods.
The pilot, which starred newcomer Raegan Rozas, Jordana Spiro and Josh Andrés Rivera, was inspired by Jimenez’s own experience. It is a 1990s-set coming-of-age story about Laura (Rozas), a girl who’s caught between two worlds: the fast-paced lifestyle of Las Vegas and her strong Mormon faith and community.
Jimenez and Robespierre executive produced alongside Showalter and Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal and Michael Lewen.
HBO Max also recently passed on psychological thriller drama pilot Red Bird Lane starring Susan Sarandon while picking up to pilot Julia Child pilot Julia.

Exclusive: Small Engine Repair, the indie adaptation of John Pollono’s play, finally gets its big screen moment as it tries to find theatrical distribution the only way it is done in Los Angeles these days — at the drive-in. Written and directed by Pollono a decade after it became an underground stage hit in LA, the film will be screened by 30West and CAA Media Finance for buyers at The Electric Dusk Drive-In on Wednesday. I wrote about the film in April in a Coping With Covid-19 column, this after its SXSW premiere got cancelled along with the festival because the pandemic shut down everything.
Small Engine Repair stars Pollono, Jon Bernthal, Shea Whigham, Jordana Spiro, Ciara Bravo and Spencer House. The film revolves around blue collar childhood buddies Frank (Pollono), Swaino (Bernthal) and Packie (Whigham). Even when they brawl which is often, the trio is deeply bonded over the...

In Oklahoma in 1960, 18 year old Maggie (Liana Liberato) moves from the city to a sparsely populated rural town. On her first day, she defends and becomes friends with class outcast Iris (Kara Hayward). The film chronicles the ups and downs of their friendship.
To The Stars had an unusual production, with director Martha Stephens and cinematographer Andrew Reed shooting for colour and black and white at the same time, with Stephens using a monitor that allowed her to switch between viewing the two different formats. This must have been a huge challenge for the production, necessitating clever choices with both lighting and colour palette to ensure that the film looked right, as if it was intended to be seen in this form, whichever version you watch. To my knowledge only the colour version is being made available at the moment, but I am very curious to see the black and white,...

To celebrate the release of the acclaimed new drama To The Stars, which is released this week on streaming services, we spoke to the two leads of the film to find out more.
Based in a small town in Oklahoma in the 1960s, the film tells the story of the friendship between the reserved Iris (Kara Hayward) and the reckless, worldly Maggie (Liana Liberato) and how they begin to influence each other lives in profound and unexpected ways. But the film touches on more than just the two ladies and their new bonds, as it delves into such themes as class, race, sexuality, repression, all of which were reasons – amongst others – for both actresses to want to tell this story.
Directed by Martha Stephens (Land Ho!), the film co-stars Tony Hale (Veep), Shea Whigham (Mission: Impossible 7), Jordana Spiro (Ozark), Lucas Jade Zissman (20th Century Women), Tina Parker (Breaking Bad...

A shy Oklahoma girl has her life transformed by a charismatic newcomer in this comfortingly formulaic coming-of-age drama
It’s the beginning of the 1960s in small-town Oklahoma: dress silhouettes oscillate between the flare of the 50s new look and hipper pencil-skirt sleekness, gossip runs rife and minds are, with a few noble exceptions, pretty small. Iris, a shy, speccy, secretly smart high-school senior with a humiliating bladder-control problem, lives with her alcoholic mom (Jordana Spiro) and taciturn dad (Shea Whigham).
One day during the long walk to school, Iris is saved from the local jocks’ daily dose of bullying by newcomer Maggie (Liana Liberato). With her sensuous physicality and imaginative mind, Maggie bamboozles the local popular girls with a semi-credible line of Bs about her father being a magazine photojournalist in town for a story about rural poverty, when really the family moved there to escape some vague scandal...

Despite growing up as a Swedish girl in Canada, Malin Akerman could easily relate to the central story of her new movie, To the Stars, a coming-of-age indie drama set in 1960s Oklahoma. The film revolves around teenagers Iris (Kara Hayward) and Maggie (Liana Liberato), whose budding friendship takes them on a journey of self-discovery including confidence, sexuality and identity. The two young women fill each other’s voids as they navigate through bullying, intolerance and their overprotective mothers (Akerman’s Grace and Jordana Spiro’s Francie).

Melodrama has somewhat become a relic of cinema’s past. To be sure, we get melodramatic movies still being released, but true melodrama has largely gone away. The new movie To the Stars seeks to bring melodramas back, and up until the tail end of the third act, it succeeds. Some solid cinematography, a really strong turn from Liana Liberato, and even a small sense of mystery buoys it for a good long while. Then, as it comes in for a landing, the wheels fall off and it crashes in a big way. It’s a shame, too, as it prevents the flick from earning a recommendation that it had in the bag, moments before. The film is a drama, set in 1960’s Oklahoma, and specifically a very small town. It’s the sort of town where everyone is under scrutiny, the folks consider themselves god fearing, and judgment comes quick.

A-line skirts, jukebox tunes, and diner milkshakes. The 1960s, especially the 1960s Oklahoma of the film “To the Stars,” were simpler times. But beneath the face powder lay unrest, and a hunger for an alternative. But so do John Hughes, and Peter Bogdanovich’s Larry McMurtry adaptation “The Last Picture Show.”

The story of the notorious outlaw Ned Kelly is dropping on digital and on-demand today with the Justin Kurzel-directed True History of the Kelly Gang starring George MacKay, Russell Crowe and Nicholas Hoult.

You may recognize Kara Hayward from Wes Anderson’s 2012 film “Moonrise Kingdom,” where she charmed as one half of the film’s star-crossed couple, Suzy Bishop. Since making her debut with one of the best filmmakers of the day, Hayward has kept the pedigree of her collaborators similarly high, landing roles in films by Kenneth Lonergan, Jim Jarmusch, and Jordan Peele. Now, she once again steps into the lead to lend her talents to Martha Stephens’ latest feature “To the Stars,” which was a crowd favorite at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and recently debuted an absorbing first trailer.
The synopsis from Sundance reads: “In a God fearing small town in 1960s Oklahoma, bespectacled and reclusive teen Iris endures the booze-induced antics of her mother and daily doses of bullying from her classmates. She finds solace in Maggie, the charismatic and enigmatic new girl at school, who hones in on Iris...

In these strange times, I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised at anything. However, I was caught off guard upon seeing the first trailer for one of my favorite films at Sundance Film Festival last year: Martha Stephens’ sensitive, 1950s-set drama To the Stars. I had remarked how the beautiful black-and-white cinematography by Andrew Reed gives a timeless feel to the proceedings akin to The Last Picture Show.
Now, ahead of a digital release this April, Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the trailer and, lo and behold, the film is now in full-blown color. While it’s not indicated yet if this is fully blessed by the filmmaker, it’s clear the aim is to get some more attention in a competitive digital marketplace, but we’ll be curious how the viewing experience is ultimately changed. Starring Kara Hayward, Liana Liberato, Jordana Spiro, Shea Whigham, Malin Akerman, and Tony Hale,...

We’ve seen the film about the awkward teenage girl that meets the rebellious girl that changes her life a million times before. But in “To The Stars,” the formula is mixed up a bit by transporting this coming-of-age tale to the early 1960s, where we find two young women trying to figure out how to grow up in Oklahoma in an age where females aren’t supposed to rebel.
The film stars Kara Hayward, Liana Liberato, Shea Whigham, Tony Hale, Malin Akerman, and Jordana Spiro.

"I don't care if people like me." The first official trailer has debuted for a small town indie drama titled To the Stars, which initially premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. It also won the Festival Director's Award at the Cinetopia Film Festival last year. Originally in B&w, now being shown in color, the film is a "coming-of-age tale, a story about finding power and comfort in one’s own skin" set in 1960s Oklahoma. Under small town scrutiny, a withdrawn farmer's daughter forges an intimate friendship with a worldly but reckless new girl. To the Stars co-stars Kara Hayward and Liana Liberato, along with Jordana Spiro, Shea Whigham, Malin Akerman, Tony Hale, and Adelaide Clemens. Featuring cinematography by Andrew Reed. This picked up great reviews at Sundance and other fests, and seems like a worthy drama with some style and substance to offer. Not sure why they dropped B&w though.
