The second episode of NBC’s Crossbones, “The Covenant,” begins with a rather out-of-the-blue revelation: James Balfour (Peter Stebbings), Blackbeard’s (John Malkovich) wheelchair-bound inventor friend, has actually succeeded in repairing the shiny, golden longitude chronometer that Tom Lowe (Richard Coyle) took such care to destroy at the beginning of the series. How he got it fixed so quickly is beyond me. Anyhow, he has done so, and Blackbeard at last has the weapon that Lowe was so desperate to keep from him.
Soon, however, Blackbeard is faced with another obstacle: a crew of men led by Sam Valentine (Stuart Wilson), an old acquaintance of Blackbeard. The Commodore wants Sam to take the chronometer and sell it to the British forces, led by William Jagger (Julian Sands) in Jamaica. The payment that the Commodore wants: two hell-burners (powerful battleships). Sam has a rather adverse reaction to Blackbeard’s offer, feeling...

While most indie horror films are interested in getting you as much "bang for the buck" as humanly possible, there are always a few filmmakers out there who insist on using the horror genre as a vehicle for plain, simple, and sometimes painfully "relatable" stories about the frank difficulties of normal life. (Check out films like Marianne, Absentia, or Citadel for a few great examples.) Simply put: we're all afraid of sharks, stalkers, and monsters; that's the easy stuff. So kudos to the independent filmmakers who make horror films and suspense thrillers about "normal" fears like loss, regret, betrayal, and isolation.

Top brass at the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff) have announced a new programme on Canadian Cinema as well as the traditionally strong roster of foreign-language films eligible for the Fipresci Award in the Awards Buzz section, and Modern Masters.

“We’ve selected Canadian films for a special focus at this year’s festival for many reasons, not the least of which is the wealth of talent emerging from its relatively small, indigenous film industry, and the depth and richness of story and character portrayal its films exemplify,” said festival director Darryl Macdonald.

It's been quite a "Rookie Blue" season for Officer Gail Peck, confirmed by the actress who plays her, Charlotte Sullivan.
She lost fellow-cop boyfriend Nick Collins (Peter Mooney) to another colleague, Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym); she very tentatively started a new relationship with forensic pathologist Holly (Aliyah O'Brien); she suffered a serious wrist burn while confiscating marijuana plants; and she ducked the bullets of a would-be cop killer who's continuing to target 15 Division in the show's Season 4 finale.
That two-part episode of the ABC police drama wraps up Thursday (Sept. 12), and Sullivan is ending the series' year grateful to be showing different colors of Gail while staying true to the character's typically edgy, not exactly sociable persona.
"I feel really lucky," the Canadian actress tells Zap2it. "I feel like my character has had the most growth and the most interesting things to play. I sort of had suspicions about...

Remember Peter Stebbings' last film, "Defendor"? Featuring Woody Harrelson in a wacky costume, the movie won people's hearts and was a smash hit at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival.
Vancouver-born Stebbings is back with "Empire of Dirt," which is set to premiere at this year's Tiff.
"Empire of Dirt" focuses on an impoverished single mother who's trying to save her teenage daughter from the streets. Also, the mother returns home and attempts to reconcile with her own mother. It's an interesting tri-level generational story, full of heartbreak and poignant moments.
Three native female protagonists -- Jennifer Podemski ("Take This Waltz"), Luke Kirby ("Take This Waltz") and fresh faces Cara Gee and Shahiyela Pourier-Eyre -- take on the lead roles.
Podemski, who also produced the film, brought the script to Stebbings while he was editing "Defendor."
You can check out "Empire of Dirt" at Tiff.

I won't even begin to get into the plethora of animated short films announced today for Tiff's Canadia shorts blocks, because there is a wealth of interesting cinema spewing forth from the bowels of English and French Canada for this years edition of Tiff. Regulars Bruce McDonald, Michael Dowse, Denis Villeneuve, Robert Lapage, Bruce Sweeney and the documentary tag-team of Jennifer Baichwal & Edward Burtynsky all have new films, aloing with the current darling of Canuck cinema, Xavier Dolan. The multi-talented Jeff Barnaby's provocative looking First Nations film Rhymes For Young Ghouls (pictured below) gets its world premiere along with a film directed by prolific character actor Peter Stebbings and a surprisingly un-pornographic sounding new one from Canada's L'enfant terrible, Bruce Labruce. All of these...

The 2013 Toronto International Film Festival has announced its lineup of Canadian features, which includes The F Word from Michael Dowse (Goon) starring Daniel Radfliffe and Adam Driver ("Girls"), Xavier Dolan's new film Tom at the Farm and Denis Villeneuve's second film to be added to the festival Enemy, which stars one of his two leads in Prisoners (which is also premiering in Toronto), Jake Gyllenhaal. The F Word is also Daniel Radfliffe's third film in the fest after Horns from Alexandre Aja and Kill Your Darlings. F Word centers on Wallace (Radfliffe) who meets Chantry (Zoe Kazan) and it would be love at first sight, except she lives with her long-term boyfriend. So Wallace, acting with both best intentions -- and maybe a little denial -- discovers the dirtiest word in romance: friends. Dolan is coming off the fantastic Laurence Anyways and again wrote, directed and stars in...

With Kick-Ass 2 rolling into theatres, Stuart Heritage looks back at the original c-word sporting superhero comedy
Spoiler Alert: This blog is published ahead of the screening on Channel 4 tomorrow (Saturday) at 10pm. Do not read if you have not seen the film and don't want to know anything about it.
"With no power, comes no responsibility." – Dave Lizewski
It isn't out for another fortnight, but Kick-Ass 2 already has a fight on its hands. It's being released in the middle of a summer notable for its expensive flops, star Jim Carrey has publicly distanced himself from the film and some of the online clips are either disappointingly soggy or too full of regrettable bumfluff to be taken seriously.
But even if Kick-Ass 2 is a dog's dinner, at least we've still got the original. Released in 2010 on a wave of controversy – largely thanks to the 11-year-old girl who...

Title: Superheroes Directors: Michael Barnett and Theodore James There’s an odd and easygoing charm to Superheroes, a colorful new documentary which enjoys its world broadcast premiere on HBO on Monday, August 8. While in the narrative realm James Gunn’s “Super”, Peter Stebbings’ “Defendor” and Matthew Vaughn’s ultra-stylized Kick-Ass, among others, have examined the worlds and worldviews of those who take on a superhero guise without any particular special powers, “Superheroes” is a nonfiction look at those who don self-made spandex costumes along with alter egos, patrolling city streets at night to stop evildoers and protect the innocent. An engaging if ultimately intellectually lightweight sub-cultural safari, the movie offers up something for...

We have six months to go and a lot of movies left to watch, and as was evidenced by the six films I included in my "Top Ten of the Year Contenders" on yesterday's The Best and Worst Movies of 2011... So Far post, there haven't been a ton of excellent films in theaters just yet. Three of those six films I saw at the Cannes Film Festival and only one of them has hit theaters so far (Midnight in Paris). This means we have to wash away the taste of the last six months. Sure, there were some good films and films we will all likely revisit over the years, but I think we can all generally agree 2011 hasn't exactly been a stellar year for movies.
So what's coming up? Well, I was able to compile a list of the top 21 (plus three) films I'm personally looking forward to seeing.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Indican Pictures.
Director: Anais Granofsky.
Writers: Anais Granofsky and Ingrid Veninger.
Regeneration was completed in 2004 as The Limb Salesman. Starring Peter Stebbings (Defendor), this film was retitled and released on DVD in 2010. Re-released in February, 2011 through Indican Pictures with additional scenes, Regeneration has had less than a smooth ride to reach viewers. This is a small indie film, which was partially funded by Telefilm Canada and Regeneration will reach a number of viewers by being so diverse in genres. There is a western vibe here, with much drama and sci-fi making an appearance through the inclusion of an "eco-catastrophe" (Indican). However, at the heart of the film beats a romance between central characters Dr. Goode (Stebbings) and Clara (Ingrid Veninger).

The Black List continues to be a springboard for script sales. Darius Films has optioned Point A, a script by Chris Rubeo that made the 2010 Black List. Rubeo is set to direct his script, and Darius Films principal Nicholas Tabarrok will produce. Rubeo wrote and directed the indie Hale Bopp. Point A is an unconventional love story between a 35-year-old magazine writer and the subject of his latest piece, a witty teenage video blogger. "It's pretty provocative material," Tabarrok said, "but Chris does a great job creating an authentic and believable chemistry between the two characters." Darius Films produced the Peter Stebbings-directed Defendor, which starred Woody Harrelson, Kat Dennings and Sandra Oh, and A Beginners Guide to Endings, which Jonathan Sobol directed with Harvey Keitel, Scott Caan and Jk Simmons. E1 acquired it for summer release. Rubeo is repped by Icm and manager John Tantillo.

HollywoodLife.com’s Editor-in-Chief Bonnie Fuller strolled the red carpet with her fellow Canadian stars! Check out all the pics!
Bonnie returned to her native Canada for the star-studded 31st Annual Genie Awards in Ottawa, Ont. and rubbed shoulders with some big Hollywood names — some you might not have realized were Canadian! Bonnie had the honor of presenting the fan-voted favorite actor category, which was awarded to Canadian cutie and star of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Jay Baruchel. Keep reading for a full list of winners!
Jay was most recently in the movie The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, but you would also recognize him from hit movies like Million Dollar Baby, Knocked Up, How to Train Your Dragon, and She’s Out of My League. He must have been super excited to win, because as he was accepting the awards he thanked his “fiancée,” actress Allison Pill, and accidentally announced his engagement for the first time!

Directed by James Gunn

The drama is mostly of the sad-sack variety, brimming with twisted humor. While broad slapstick satires generally don’t cross...
