Sweden’s Svt Orders ‘Whiskey On The Rocks’ From Skyverse Nordic
Sweden’s public service broadcaster Svt has boarded Skyverse Nordic comedy-drama Whiskey On The Rocks as its main commissioning broadcaster. The six-part series is still at script and production development stage and is being billed as a “premium, epic Cold War dramedy special event” directed by Björn Stein (Midnight Sun) and based on an original story from author Jonas Jonasson. It is among the first shows from Skyverse Nordic, which is a subsidiary of Sparkling, the Stockholm-based sister company to Humanoids that Deadline revealed back in May. The show reunites Jonasson with Skyverse boss Patrick Nebout and creative producer Henrik Jansson-Schweizer, who were collectively behind Sweden’s biggest export success, the Oscar-nominated The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared. A Scandinavian and international cast are being sought to play the drama’s protagonists onboard the submarine and in Moscow.

One issue links four of the five contenders for the Nordisk Film & TV Prize this year, including “Sisterhood.” Given ease of travel and cost, co-produced series are four times more likely to be crime, thriller or suspense titles than any other genre, according to Ampere Analysis. The challenge then, is to stand out in this highly competitive field.
Nordic Noir achieved that over a decade ago, bringing a chillingly darker edge to comfy European procedurals. Yet almost as soon as it was consecrated, its founding fathers attempted to broaden its reach, adding a marked social edge; setting it in London with an iconic British actor; or opening up to issues such as international terrorism.
In ”Sisterhood,” first fruit of development-distribution alliance between Sky Studios and Iceland’s Sagafilm (“The Minister”), now part owned by Beta Film, lead writer Jóhann Ævar Grímsson simply stands Nordic Noir on its head.

Goteborg — The 20th Nordic Film Market, held parallel to the Göteborg Film Festival, closed Sunday after three days of screenings and pitchings of 48 Nordic films and projects. Following, five key takeaways or trends:
Standout Nordic Brand Quality
An excellent crop, better than 2018, with a large diversity of content, catering to arthouse/mainstream as well as local/international audiences – these were prevailing reactions from international buyers and programmers polled yesterday in Göteborg. A senior A festival programmer – who asked to remain anonymous- even said: “Today the Nordics are perhaps the strongest region in Europe creatively across TV drama, feature and documentary film.”
Although most titles had already been snatched by the big Nordic sellers – TrustNordisk, LevelK, New Europe Film Sales, The Yellow Affair, Sf Studios – a dozen small offers in post, or in development at the Discovery section, still open for negotiations, made the Göteborg stop-over – fully worthwhile for the 25-plus sales reps in attendance.

Colcoa is keeping up with the times. Now in its twenty-first year, the lauded French film festival, sponsored by the Franco-American Cultural Fund, has added a pair of forward-thinking new categories for its newest edition. This year will include a virtual reality program and a web series competition, in addition to its Cinema, Television and Shorts competitions.
“These two new popular formats offer more opportunities to showcase the creativity of French producers and filmmakers as well as the diversity of French production,” said François Truffart, Colcoa Executive Producer and Artistic Director. “While entertainment is still the key word for the program, with a balanced mix of comedies and dramas, several topical issues will cover the program this year, including the environment, discrimination, racism, terrorism, and the role of the artist in society. More than ever, Colcoa will offer a unique opportunity to see these universal topics from different angles.”

Gudmundsson’s debut was awarded the €12,500 Ndr Film Prize by a jury including Swedish actress Inger Nilsson (who played the title role of Pippi Longstocking in the classic children’s films when she was nine years old), Munich-based producer Jörg Bundschuh (The Fencer) and film director Marc Brummund (Sanctuary), for a “feature film of special artistic quality”.
The intensely moving coming of age tale, which takes place over one summer at a remote fishing village in Iceland, is being handled by Berlin-based sales agent Films Boutique.

Update: Andrew Davies tribute, Beta, Studiocanal deals; The Halcyon, Mata Hari set the tone for market awash with high-end drama.
Mipcom got off to a glamourous start this year with world premiere screenings of Sony Pictures Television’s The Halcyon followed by Julius Berg’s Mata Hari starring Vahina Giocante, Rutger Hauer and Christopher Lambert on Sunday.
These two premieres, on the eve of Mipcom’s official opening, set the tone for a market that will be more awash than ever with high-end dramas.
In the backdrop, one of the talking points is which platforms these series will be distributed on as part of Mipcom’s overall theme of “New Television”.
Sony Corporation president and CEO Kazuo Hirai, who kicked off Mipcom’s conference programme on Monday, said content and delivery were two sides of the same coin when it came to getting viewers to pay for they were watching.

The Goteborg Film Festival is adding TV drama to its usual public film programme for its 2016 edition.
Goteborg (Jan 29-Feb 8) is already well known as a meeting place for the TV industry, because of its industry TV Drama Vision two-day programme.
Now the festival’s new TV section will showcase several Nordic programmes. They include:
The Most Forbidden (Sweden)
A miniseries by Tova Magnusson written by Asa Lantz based on Kerstin Thorvall’s 1976 autobiographical novel about a middle aged woman’s desires.
Follow the Money (Denmark)
A drama series from Jeppe Gjervig Gram and Per Fly starring Bo Larsen as a detective investigating how a company might have been involved in a death on the Danish coast.
Occupied (Norway)
Based on a Jo Nesbo idea, this story looks at a Norwegian prime minister in a fictitious near future when he wants to shut down fossil fuel production, leading Russia to invade Norway.

DC doesn't have the greatest track record with their cinematic endeavors, but when it comes to television, they've had some amazing hits. However, outside of animation, they didn't really branch out to many of their second tier heroes until Smallville hit the air. We were then introduced to not only the young Clark Kent, but eventually Green Arrow, Cyborg, Aquaman, Impulse and many other heroes before its ten year run ended. A year and a half later, producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg brought us Arrow, starring Steven Amell as Oliver Queen in a darker, grittier take on the hero (which has borrowed more than a little from the Batman comics), who has returned home to find that his city has been run down by corrupt politicians and a seedy criminal element. Taking on the guise of Arrow, he sets out on his own to take his city back, only...

Tom Cruise has been offered the lead role in "South China Sea," an action thriller described as "Fast & Furious set on water" for Millennium Films.
The Swedish directing duo of Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein ("Underworld: Awakening," "The Bridge (Bron)") will direct the project which has been put on the fast track towards production.
The present day set tale follows a legendary American pirate who was imprisoned in Hong Kong. A female police lieutenant offers him his freedom in exchange for helping her take down a formidable pirate gang plaguing shipping lanes across the South China Sea. If he does the assignment, he might also have a chance to save his estranged son who is at the center of all this.
Kerry Williamson and Michael Stokes penned the script, while Andrew Gunn is producing.

Cinelinx is totally freaked out by the new 6 Souls Blu-ray!
The Set-up
A psychologist (Julianne Moore) crosses the line into the surreal when she meets Adam (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a man with multiple personalities, who is not all that he appears to be.
Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein
The Delivery
6 Souls is an odd but entertaining scarefest from the producers of The Ring and starring Oscar nominee Julianne Moore and Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers. It is written by Michael Cooney (who also wrote the excellent yet similar Identity) and is directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein.
Moore plays Dr. Cara Harding, a practically-mided criminal psychologist who doesn't buy into radical theories and notions, including those of her father (Jeffrey DeMunn, The Walking Dead), also a criminal psychologist. She finds her personal beliefs turned upside-down when he introduces her to Adam (Rhys Meyers), a patient who...

6 Souls is the latest straight-to-home-video horror film from Underworld: Awakening directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. This long-delayed and title-changed horror mystery contains very little — if any real horror, aside from the actual thought of having to devote two hours of your life to something this mundane.
6 Souls is a painfully simple film that flat-lines before it ever really has the chance to get up off the ground. Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers give the film little support as they both struggle to stay awake long enough to read their lines. 6 Souls is just another empty thriller begging to be rented for a dollar the next time you visit your local grocery store’s Redbox kiosk.
Cara Harding (Julianne Moore) is a forensic psychiatrist that comes across a patient (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) with some sort of multiple personality disorder. His case is a unique one though, because his identities...

There's nothing worse than a supernatural thriller that has you mesmerized for the first two acts only to lose your respect in the last two. That's exactly how I felt when I pressed "Stop" after watching 6 Souls. All the warning signs for a movie that doesn't deliver were there. For instance, it was originally released in 2010 with a different title (Shelter) and just now is seeing the light of day.
Dr. Cara Harding (Julianne Moore) is introduced to a patient named Adam (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who has multiple personalities. After researching some of them, she realizes they are all actual murder victims. Cara starts digging into the man's past to discover how or if his personalities all tie together somehow. Her investigations lead to encounters with the victim's relatives and mysterious religious fanatics.
Talk about a movie showing promise and then just falling off the deep end halfway through. 6 Souls...

New on DVD/Blu-ray: '6 Souls,' an Overdue Surprise for Horror Fans, Leads a Slow Week for New Movies
6 Souls - Radius TWC - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Mans Marlind, Bjorn Stein Cast: Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jeffrey DeMunn,Frances Conroy, Brooklyn Proulx. Full cast + crew 6 Souls - under its previous title of Shelter - first hit theaters back in March of 2010. That was in Japan, however. For some reason it took about three years for it to find a release in the U.S. That kind of delay is usually the sign of a stinker, but that's not quite the case here. 6 Souls isn't a grand slam, but there's plenty of reason it shouldn't have taken this long to journey to our shores. Some really standout performances by Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Jeffrey DeMunn, and an intriguing story of a psych patient whose multiple...

Not always the peppiest or scariest creation to shoot down the pipe, 6 Souls holds attention with thick mood and a finale that’s surprisingly satisfying. An entertaining film with flashes of competency, 6 Souls is hardly groundbreaking but a good time nonetheless. Julianne Moore stars as Cara Harding a female forensic psychiatrist who begins treating a young man named Adam (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) and discovers that all but one of his multiple personalities are murder victims. The more she finds out about him and his past, the closer she and her loved ones are to becoming murder victims themselves.
I must admit admit that 6 Souls, while somewhat what I expected in terms for the aforementioned “chills,” was really a very well crafted movie with the first 15 minutes dedicated to an engrossing therapy session between Cara and Adam that cleverly foreshadows much of the horror to come. Directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein...

The patently familiar new psycho thriller 6 Souls actually played film festivals back in 2010 under the title Shelter before collecting dust on a Weinstein shelf for a few years, only to pop up on VOD this week. In April of 2013. That's not meant to imply that every genre title that suffers a long release delay is a generic, tiresome, and already outdated piece of low-end cable TV fodder, but in the case of 6 Souls (as well as the recent John Cusack flick The Factory) the plain truth is that it would have been a forgettable turkey three years ago. Today it's just a three-year-old turkey with some mild curiosity value.
The curious will be rewarded with a psychological thriller about a man with multiple personalities that seem to correspond to a half-dozen murder victims. Jonathan Rhys Myers is the lunatic suffering from what I call "early-career Edward Norton" psychoses; Julianne Moore...

For me, the horror bug is one I’ve been unable to kick in all the years since I’ve been infatuated with cinema, in spite of the fact that the genre has slid significantly from grace (and general watchability). Last year alone the four worst films I saw (of 145) were horror flicks and it’s come to the point where scouring the indie circles is close to the only way to find fare of note. I had no expectations when I ventured into 6 Souls, from the fact it hasn’t seen the light of the big screen despite being shelved since 2010 to the generally toxic reviews it had already received. The signs weren’t promising.
Imagine my amazement (as in check as it may have been) that 6 Souls, is actually far from a total disaster. It is in fact a compulsively watchable effort. More than I can say for most films of this ilk,...

Watch 4 new clips from 6 Souls (a.k.a. Shelter) starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, this is a seriously eerie film which I managed to see recently via VOD, and I can highly recommend it if you're up for some Skeleton Key-like storytelling. The film opens on April 5th via Radius TWC, cleverly-scripted by Michael Cooney, with a cast including Jeffrey DeMunn, Frances Conroy, Brooklynn Proulx and Nathan Corddry. In 6 Souls, after the death of her husband, Dr. Cara Harding's (Julianne Moore) faith in God has been shaken, but not her belief in science. In an attempt to open her up to accepting unexplainable psychiatric theories, her father introduces her to Adam, a patient with multiple personalities who takes on some of the physical characteristics of his other personalities. Cara quickly discovers that Adam’s other personalities are murder victims...

Actress Julianne Moore has spent much of her career appearing in such acclaimed, prestige ventures as Short Cuts, Far From Heaven, and, most recently, the TV movie Game Change, for which the actress won an Emmy with her note perfect portrayal of Sarah Palin. But Moore’s filmography also boasts a surprising number of horror movies—including The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The Forgotten, and Silence of the Lambs sequel Hannibal—and the actress admits to a fondness for the genre. “I like scary movies,” she says. “I don’t like slashers, but I’ve always loved stuff that’s about the devil.

Co-directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein’s 6 Souls was filmed all the way back in 2009, so it’s been sitting on the shelf without U.S. distribution for quite a while now. It’s highly unlikely that’s a good sign as far as the film’s quality is concerned, and, in fact, seeing as it’s already been released in multiple markets all around the world, you can already go to its Rotten Tomatoes page and see that it has yet to earn anything other than a handful of negative reviews from UK outlets. Still though, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and the new trailer that’s been put together for the film’s upcoming Us release promotes what looks to be a promising psychological thriller with horror movie overtones…so maybe you’ll find it interesting anyway? The film stars Julianne Moore as a hot-shot psychiatrist and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as...
