People of a certain age probably remember being beguiled by those gaudy gross Goosebumps book covers at Scholastic book fairs in elementary school — the raised lettering, the monstrous pets going berserk, the skeletons taking family portraits. People of a slightly older age probably remember their kids coming home with those gaudy gross Goosebumps books, devoid of what teachers call "literary worth" but rife with monsters and maniacs and twist endings that would make O. Henry giggle with glee. Apparently R. L. Stein's series is still beloved, as its cinematic adaptation, starring Jack Black as fictitious imagining of the author, scared $23.5 million out of audiences, taking the top spot at the box office this weekend. Among the big names Goosebumps trumped: Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, Matt Damon, and Adam Sandler. The Martian landed in a close second place with $21.5 million, making its domestic cume $143.7 million, while Spielberg's newest...

In the upcoming Goosebumps movie, comedian Jack Black stars as spooky storyteller R. L. Stine, whose ghoulish creatures—previously confined to his bestselling children’s books—are unexpectedly brought to life by a teen neighbor (Scandal first kid Dylan Minnette). With the help of Stine’s daughter, Hannah (Israeli actress Odeya Rush), a race ensues to capture the author’s manic monsters from wrecking havoc on their small town. It’s a comedy-fueled horror (due Aug. 7, 2015) that promises to channel Goosebumps’ kid-approved brand of scary while pleasing grownup loyalists of the 1990s franchise.

Deluxe Laboratory in Hollywood is scheduled to close its doors May 9. It’s hardly a surprise, though it is another prominent reminder that film production and distribution is winding down and being replaced by digital technology. More than 95 percent of cinema screens in North America are now digital, and a studio typically makes fewer than 100 film prints for this market, even for 4,000-plus screen tentpole releases. Warren L. Stein, Deluxe’s COO for North America, notified customers in a memo that was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. It reads: “The capture and exhibition of motion pictures has

After a century of developing Hollywood's pictures, Deluxe Laboratory will close shutter for good in May. The storied institution, which was honored at the Academy's Scientific and Technical Awards last month, has finally succumbed to the industry's rush to digital conversion. A letter sent by Warren L. Stein, Deluxe's COO for North America, explains that the falling orders for its traditional services has led to significant financial losses, and is directly responsible for a May 9th closing of the plant. We reported back in March that Rob Letterman had signed on to direct the Goosebumps movie based on the popular children’s books series by author R.L. Stein, and today we have news that he could be reuniting with the lead from another one of his directorial projects, Gulliver’s Travels.
Jack Black is reported to be in talks to play a lead in Goosebumps according to The Wrap, and their source says that the actor would be playing a writer (much like R.L. Stein himself) who is terrified of his own characters that he writes about. Delightful.
We’ll keep you posted on the latest for Goosebumps.

The legal battle between Legendary Pictures and producers Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Doug Davison over the Godzilla reboot seems more and more certain to be headed to trial. “We’re not interested in arbitration, we want a jury to hear this case”, said the producers’ lawyer Stanton L. Stein in a hearing today in La Superior Court. With his clients Lee and Lin looking on, Stein made clear that a jury trial is still his goal despite an agreement today by all parties to pursue mediation. “I understand why they don’t want public scrutiny of this case. I understand why they don’t want their behavior being made public”, he added of Legendary’s efforts to have the case moved to private arbitration. Back in January dueling suits were filed between the producers and Legendary after the studio sought to remove them from the project with a tiny $25,000 payout.

I can attribute my insatiable appetite for books to authors like R.L. Stein who penned the series Goosebumps series, starting with Welcome to Dead House, which was released in July 1992. Since then, my daughter has also enjoyed the books and the old television series that aired in the 90′s and has since been aired on The Hub. She and other fans will be thrilled to hear that the Goosebumps movie has found its director.

Hyde Park-Image Nation and Troika Pictures have announced that actor-singer Nick Jonas will star as the male lead opposite Isabel Lucas in the edgy thriller Careful What You Wish For. The film is directed by Elizabeth Allen (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Aquamarine”) and written by Chris Frisina and Gregg Hurwitz. In the high-stakes, edge-of-your-seat thriller The Call, a thin thread of survival separates a teenage kidnap victim from her only hope: a compassionate, steady voice on the other end of a cell phone marshaling all the resources she can to find her.
Veteran 911 Emergency Call Center operator Jordan (Halle Berry) has the kind of job that’s not for the faint of heart: navigating the public’s distress in order to save lives. But when a young woman’s frantic report of a prowler ends tragically, Jordan is devastated. Reassessing her life, Jordan wonders if perhaps she’s experienced her last fraught-filled phone call. With a supportive cop (Morris Chestnut) for a boyfriend, maybe it’s time to step back, enjoy life, and teach others the ins and outs of her high-pressure profession.

There’s already work to be found in the upcoming Jack the Giant Killer and an adaptation of R.L. Stein‘s beloved Goosebumps series — now, Darren Lemke is hitting another childhood classic. THR says he’s been hired to write the feature film version of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?
Walden Media picked up the rights to the popular computer game, which then had a run as a game show back in the early ’90s. Jennifer Lopez is the current producer on this project and, obviously, could potentially star as the titular character; however, that was back in November, so things could have changed by now. Benny Medina, Simon Fileds, Nick Osbourne, Trevor Engelson, and Devin Andre are also on the long list of producers.
Here’s a little rundown of the game, if you weren’t fortunate enough to play it as a child: It centers on “Carmen Sandiego,...

David Duchovny's lawyer has ordered a psychologist to stop using the actor's name in association with a new book on sex addiction.
The X Files star has talked candidly about his sex addiction issues in the past after he split from his wife Tea Leoni in 2008 and enrolled in a rehab program to treat his personal problems.
Clinical psychologist David J. Ley has written a new book on the subject, titled The Myth of Sex Addiction, and he used Duchovny as an example in an article published in the New York Post over the weekend.
The actor's attorney, Stanton L. Stein, subsequently sent a letter to Ley and ordered him to stop associating the star with his research, writing, "We understand that your book characterises sex addiction as a 'fictitious disease'... used as an excuse for irresponsible behaviour. Mr. Duchovny objects to being associated with your book in any way."
Stein tells the New York Post, "I am not complaining about whether sexual addiction is or is not an actual medical condition... I am objecting to him using my client's picture in order to sell his book. The purpose of my letter was to tell him I don't want him using illegal pictures of my client in his book."...

Columbia Pictures and producer Neal Moritz have been working on getting a big screen adaptation of R.L. Stein's children's book series Goosebumps for a few years now. Last we heard, the studio hired Disturbia screenwriter Carl Ellsworth to write the screenplay. They obviously didn't like what he brought to them because they are bringing in Jack the Giant Killer screenwriter Darren Lemke to take a crack at the script.
The Goosebumps series has sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, second only to the Harry Potter series in total sales. There's a huge audience out there for this. A lot of people grew up reading this series, so I think this could end up being a very successful movie franchise. I love that it's like a Twilight Zone style series involving youth.
I previously stated that I'd like to see director Joe Dante (The Burbs, Gremlins) develop the project.
