The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. There will be a quiz later. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “Where Are The Kids’ Movies This Summer?” — Andrew Stewart at Variety gets rhetorical and points out that some analysts think the box office will be soft this summer without Pixar and more movies aimed at the kiddos. The ultimate answer? All the children’s movies are aimed at 35-year-old men now. “Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones (No Baggage Review)” — Outlaw Vern asks politely that we put aside the trillion conversations we’ve had online about the middle prequel child and strive for a fresh perspective. “Variations on the Theme of Filmmaking” — Scott Jordan Harris at Balder & Dash explores the deceptively simple prompt for the Imagination Series short film competition as well as the multiple permutations that extend from it. Let your mind wander on this set of dialogue: A: We...

Amir here to kick off We Can’t Wait!, a week-long series by Team Experience on our most anticipated films of 2014. The title is pretty much self-explanatory. We voted as a group and, starting tomorrow, each of us will cover one of the films that ended up on our top ten 14 list. Before that, however, let’s take a quick look at some of the films that were placed highly on our individual ballots but failed to make the final list. You may remember that I posted my own personal list of most anticipated films in this space previously. Let’s hear from the rest of the Team…

Thursday 4 Am: Get ready for a wacky weekend when four major studio releases will be joining an already crowded marketplace. Good thing DreamWorks Animation and Twentieth Century Fox turned on the ignition to rev Turbo into the domestic box office race on Wednesday. This non-sequel original story opened #1 with $5.8M into 3,552 theaters and received a coveted ‘A’ CinemaScore which should help word of mouth by Friday. The 3D toon was followed close behind by Universal/Illumination’s three-week-old 3D toon Despicable Me 2 ($5.6M last night but on its way to $500M worldwide today), #3 Sony/Happy Madison’s Grown-Ups ($4.3 for a $55.8M North American cume) and #4 Warner Bros/Legendary’s Pacific Rim ($3.5M and passing $100M worldwide). Sorry to repeat myself, but tracking has been unreliable this summer just as it’s been for some time now. But that hasn’t stopped all those morons at other media outlets from...

So, as we know, money talks, and Paramount Pictures definitely wants to move ahead with another sequel,so you guys can get ready to see a G.I. Joe 3 movie in the future. Andrew Stewart over at Variety tweeted, "Yo Joe! After a $132 mil opening for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Paramount said it will move forward with a third Joe." I actually saw the movie, myself, and I thought it was really good. I personally liked the first installment better, but this one was still no slouch by any means. The big screen adaptation of Frank Miller's 300 sequel, Xerxes, has gone through a couple different title changes already. The three previous titles were Xerses, 300: The Battle of Artemisium, and 300: The Battle of Artemisia. According to Variety's Andrew Stewart Warner bros. has once again changed the title of the movie, and now it will go by 300: Rise of an Empire.
The story follows the Persian king-turned-god Xerxes as he leads "an army against Greek forces, who have little training but are under the guidance of a general named Themistokles. (The giant battle at the center of this movie is supposed to occur at the same time as the fighting in 300.)"
The movie is being directed by Noam Murro (Smart People), and as of right now the cast includes Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom) playing Themistocles, Rodrigo Santoro returning as Xerxes, and Eva Green as Artemisia.
What do you think of the new title?...

I think I've just about lost count of the amount of news articles we've posted regarding the 300 prequel/sequel's official title. It's changed quite a bit since they first started talking about it. Now, word is coming down that what was once 300: Battle of Artemisia, now has a new title.
The upcoming film, which is currently in production and slated to release on August 2, 2013 is now titled 300: Rise of an Empire. It's supposed to act as both a precursor and sequel to Zack Snyder's adaptation of Frank Miller's 300. Though of course with Snyder still busy with Man of Steel, Noam Murro is taking over directing duties.
300 sequel is now called 300: Rise Of An Empire, according to Warner Bros.

Over the past few months we've been getting casting bits here and there, but let's cross our fingers this is the last name change.

With Zack Snyder currently hard at work on the post production of Man of Steel, the sequel to 300 (originally believed to be called 300: Battle of Artemisia) will instead be directed by Noam Murro (Smart People), a fairly unconventional choice. The cast has been filling out nicely over the past few months, with Rodrigo Santoro returning as Xerxes and Eva Green set to play Artemisia. The film wil apparently serve as both a prequel And sequel to 300, but there’s not an awful lot of details currently available about either the plot or tone we should expect. However, we now have one more detail - not that it sheds an awful lot of light on anything important - and that is a brand new title for the sequel. 300 sequel is now called 300: Rise Of An Empire, according to Warner Bros.— Andrew Stewart (@Variety_Stewart) September 12, 2012...

Following a weekend report that Warner Bros. would cut a Gangster Squad sequence in which criminals attack a movie theater — described by some as “a key sequence taking place fairly late in the action” — THR has learned that the studio are now eyeing a January opening for the Ruben Fleischer film. January 11th, in particular, is looking ideal.
This should provide enough time for reshoots, though the studio is concerned over several factors inherent in the choice; among them, “how quickly the cast can be reassembled for the reshoot, concerns about cast availibility to do press in January and the competition on the calendar.” I suppose one could take the time to discuss the potential pros and cons of such a decision — I, personally, don’t think they should cut a frame, and only provide some kind of warning about the content beforehand — but it won’t change things in the slightest.

Sometimes, rumors are just plain old wrong. While it was alleged, last month, that the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer‘s Cloud Atlas would come the first weekend of December, Variety’s Andrew Stewart tweets that it’ll actually hit on October 26th. (A claim that it runs for 164 minutes are still tentative.) Dan Fellman, WB’s president of distribution, said this about the decision:
“Audiences who have seen an early screening of Cloud Atlas have been elated by its powerful and inspiring story, as well as its breathtaking visuals. An October release in North America is the perfect window to showcase this epic film.”
Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Bae Doona, and Jim Sturgess all star in the film, a take on David Mitchell‘s wild novel (about, I suppose, the nature of reincarnation) that covers huge amounts of time,...

Welcome to the 1980s! We.ve got Sylvester Stallone moving ahead on a sequel to his muscle-bound blockbuster hit The Expendables, exciting projects in the pipeline for Bruce Willis, and breaking news on Jean Claude Van Damme.s latest action thriller. Relax. You didn.t fall into a time machine. It.s just Hollywood.s obsession with nostalgia and the industry.s inability to let any stars out to pasture when they can keep stories like this afloat. Following the minor success of the meta indie Jcvd, Van Damme appears to be heading back to his bone-crunching roots, headlining Six Bullets for director Ernie Barbarash. Variety.s Andrew Stewart, who broke the story, says Van Damme would play an ex-merc (of course) hired by a martial arts expert (of course) to retrieve his kidnapped daughter (of course!). Even the plot sounds like an .80s logline, which either makes me sad...

Reports have 20th Century Fox's Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz action-comedy Knight and Day earning $3.8 million for its Wednesday opening. Over at Variety, Andrew Stewart calls this a "solid jump start." Over at Deadline, Nikki Finke calls it "a failing grade." Which one is it?
Looking at the list of top opening Wednesdays, Box-Office Mojo stops their list at $6 million so I'm not sure how Stewart thinks $3.8 is a "solid jump start." Recent releases such as Four Christmases opened at $6 million, Tropic Thunder opened at $6.5 and Public Enemies opened at $8.1. Of that bunch Four Christmases became the biggest five-day earner with $46 million, Public Enemies and Tropic Thunder followed in line with $40 and $36 million respectively.
Averaging those returns out it means we are talking about a 6-times multiplier for the five-day. Should we expect a total of $22.8 million from the new Tom Cruise movie after five days? Personally I really liked...

I've waited long enough, apparently the results for six films are all I am going to get this Saturday morning as I have used both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter to gather the list at the end of this post.
First off, it looks like we are in for a huge weekend beginning with the $14.6 million the critically panned Valentine's Day took in on Friday. Variety's Andrew Stewart says it is the highest grossing comedy for a Friday during Presidents Day Weekend, which tells me we are looking at far too many caveats to come up with a record, but whatever. The film is now likely to run into the $45+ million range for the three-day weekend and over at Deadline Nikki Finke is calling it a potential $60 million four-day.
As I was telling a friend this morning, I can understand people wanting to go see a romantic comedy in the theaters.

As part of its 50-year anniversary, The Center for Japanese Studies at the University of California, Berkeley recently awarded internationally acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki with the 2009 Berkeley Japan Prize, which honors individuals from all disciplines and professions who have, over a lifetime, influenced the world’s understanding of Japan. Hayao Miyazaki is the second recipient of the recently inaugurated Berkeley Japan Prize; the 2008 winner was novelist Haruki Murakami. In conjunction with his in-person acceptance of the award, Hayao Miyazaki was also honored with a series of events held on the Uc Berkeley campus celebrating his timeless body of film work.
